Design Context: • Fashion design is the art of the applica;on of
design and aesthe;cs or natural beauty to clothing and accessories. Fashion design is influenced by cultural and social la;tudes, and has varied over ;me. Fashion designers work in a number of ways in designing clothing and accessories. Some work alone or as part of a team. They aEempt to sa;sfy consumer desire for aesthe;cally designed clothing.
• Fashion designers aEempt to design clothes, which are func;onal as well as aesthe;cally pleasing. They must consider who is likely to wear a garment and the situa;ons in which it will be worn. They have a wide range and combina;ons of materials to work with and a wide range of colours, paEerns and styles to choose from
Task Design a shoe of your choice. You will be assessed on the following components:
• Cri;quing/Research (5 different shoes)
• Designing/Idea;on (3 different designs)
• Final sketch (minimum of one) • 3D Example of shoe made of paper (Life size)
• Photoshop poster adver;sing your shoe (A4)
1. Cri'quing/Research Collect 5 images of shoes that appeal to you. Write a short sentence and discuss with a partner why these illustrate successful use of design. Consider size, detail, shape and form and func;on.
2. Designing/Idea'on Design three different shoe designs. Each sketch must be 15x15cm in size
3. Making Using paper and glue create your shoe design
4. Evalua'ng Photograph your final shoe design. Using Photoshop create a poster adver;sing your shoe. You may need to look at other examples of effec;ve adver;sing.
Write a 200 word evalua;on considering the following: -‐What inspired you to create this design? -‐Is your shoe func'onal or is your design based on the form? -‐What things did you find challenging? -‐What would things would you alter on your design?
Form vs Func;on What does it mean?
One of the main dis;nc;ons between design and art, is purpose. Art serves the ar;sts expressive purposes.
Design is useful and essen;ally prac;cal. Design serves the purposes of others. That is, design is not self-‐expression.
To create anything we must consider consider the form (what it looks like -‐ art) and the func'on (how it works – design).
When you begin crea;ng your own show design, while it must be crea;ve and show individual flair, you must take into considera;on the func;on of your shoe and how it will be able to be worn.
