LNG R&D Activities in KOMtech
1. LNG Production System − Pilot LNG Plant; capable to produce LNG from off-gas in FPSO
2. LNG Transfer System − For small to medium scale LNG transfer from ship to ship or
from ship to jetty.
3. LNG Transportation Vessels − Transport small scale LNG from MOPU to shore or between
two jetties within short sea distance
4. LNG Fuel System − Vaporize LNG at a suitable temperature and pressure for gas
fueled engine use.
Small-Scale LNG Carriers
LNG Transportation
LNG business was always governed by bigger market players, and hence the facilities are developed in bigger scales also.
1. World’s LNG transport facility is still limited to bigger LNG Vessels (87,000m3 to 265,000m3)
2. LNG terminals are also designed to accommodate those bigger vessels.
But, with changing mindset and technology, LNG business is also changing by incorporating the trading of smaller volume of LNG, its usage and hence, the transportation.

Why Small-Scale LNG Transportation
Mr. Wim Groenendijk, GLE (Gas LNG Europe) President, stated: “A new market for natural gas is rapidly growing with significant potential for reducing emissions. LNG is reaching markets previously inaccessible to pipeline gas: as a fuel for heavy transport and for communities in off-grid locations.” (Source: GLE Press Release on 19th Feb 2014)
Small-Scale LNG Carriers
Why Small Scale LNG Transportation
Small and medium economy countries are developing their infrastructures in remote locations. They need LNG for- 1. Power production, as those places are not connected to the national
power grids 2. Industrial raw materials 3. Transportation fuel
Regular sized LNG vessels can not entre to those locations. Hence small-scale LNG carriers are necessary for transporting LNG to those remote locations.

Challenges in Small Scale LNG Transportation
1. It is a necessity based transportation method. Customized designs are required for each case to transport LNG, economically.
2. Initial investment is a factor in developing Small-Scale LNG infrastructures.
3. Requires a sustainable transportation model to compete with road transportation in future, once the infrastructures are fully developed .
4. Need to consider the problems in coastal and river waterway transportation, which will affect the-
• Designs of small coastal LNG carriers/ river barges • Design of small LNG terminal, loading/unloading facilities
Moreover, the changing government planning is the most important challenge in developing countries.

KOMtech Solution on Small-Scale LNG Transportation
KOMtech Small-Scale LNG Transportation vessels-
1. Based on the propulsion system- • Self Propelled LNG Carrier • Non-Propelled LNG Carrier, powered by Articulated Pusher
Tug
2. Based on LNG Containment system- • ‘Type-C’ LNG Tanks • ‘Membrane Type’ LNG Tank
3. Based on the Draft Limitation of the waterways- • Regular draft LNG Carriers • Shallow Draft LNG Carriers

LNG Transportation In Shallow Water Regions
1. Indonesia, Vietnam and Philippines, are now considering numerous small-scale LNG projects for the development of their remote regions.
2. The Fly River of Papua New Guinea (PNG) is the main channel of LNG transportation to the coastal area for export.
But the water depth of these locations are very shallow and leads them to consider- 1. Either a traditional small scale LNG carrier half-filled with LNG, or
2. A specialized LNG shuttle vessel of smaller capacity with limited draft to the up-stream destinations.

Articulated system provides better coupling compared to a towing vessel, allows better transit speed and safer navigation.
Elevated wheel house for save navigation during transit
Small-Scale LNG Carriers
Differentiators Of KOMtech Small-Scale LNG Transportation Solution
Lower design draft allows these vessels to transit through remote shallow draft waterways.
Comfortable manoeuvring and berthing without tug assistance.
The purpose built upper wheel house facilitates safe navigation during transit without the help of any secondary means, like, CCTV.
Tug barge combination has an advantage of multiple unit operation as shuttle services between two jetties of shorter distances
Small-Scale LNG Carriers
CONCLUSION
Small-scale LNG transportation is a great support for the development of regions nearer the water ways and difficult to reach by other means of transport system.
It’s a low cost transport solution and can carry much larger volume compared to any other means.
Small-Scale LNG Carriers
Lower draft and good manoeuvrability of these vessels make them possible to transit through shallow water river contour and coastal areas comfortably where conventional LNG carrier cannot navigate.
