Sports injuries and treatment
• More than ten million sports injuries occur each year
• Most sports injuries are due to either traumatic injury (an external blow) or overuse of muscles
or joints
• Unless you have been trained in first aid, you should never try to treat a casualty
• Many sports injuries can be prevented by:– Proper conditioning and training– Wearing appropriate protective gear– Using the correct equipment
Types of sports injury
• Types of sports injury include:– Wounds– Fractures– Joint/muscle injuries– Unconsciousness– Shock– Heat exhaustion
and heat-stroke
• You must learn how each injury occurs and how it should be treated
Wounds
• A wound is any break in the skin or body surface
• Cuts can be caused by sharp edges such as boot studs, jewellery or stones
• When the skin is cut, the blood vessels at the wound edges are cut straight across, so blood loss is very likely
• Grazes are wounds in which the top layers of skin are scraped off, leaving a raw, tender area
• Grazes are commonly caused by a sliding fall (eg a trip on a running track), a friction burn (eg hands sliding along a rope) or a grass burn (eg a sliding tackle on dry grass)
