Week 6 has seen Science Week come alive in our school. As a Chemistry Teacher it has been a wonderful opportunity to reconnect my science knowledge and share the passion of this great subject area with our children. Some experiments worked and others flopped. The inconsistency of experiments provided the opportunity for a great life lesson. Sometimes the best plans can come undone. Our response to challenges can give a great insight to who we are as individuals. When things don’t go the way we expect there are a number of alternative responses. We can blame others, blame the equipment, be harsh on ourselves or more depressingly give up and not care. The alternative is to accept that a challenge or an unexpected situation has arisen and
view it as an opportunity for learning. Together we can learn about what doesn’t work, to develop resilience to unexpected occurrences and to accept that perfection in all that we do isn’t going to occur. What we do is we accept this and take the next step. The British poet Rudyard Kipling once wrote in his famous poem “If”:
If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster And treat those two impostors just the same;
……..Yours is the Earth and everything that's in it
Thomas Edison ( a modern scientist ) also had his own take on failures after many struggles in attempting to develop the humble light bulb…..When Edison was interviewed by a young reporter who boldly asked Mr. Edison if he felt like a failure and if he thought he should just give up by now. Perplexed, Edison replied, "Young man, why would I feel like a failure? And why would I ever give up? I now know definitively over 9,000 ways that an electric light bulb will not work. Success is almost in my grasp." And shortly after that, and over 10,000 attempts, Edison invented the light bulb. Education – Life long learning is a journey of wins and failures. Know that each has its pluses and minuses. Embrace it. St Augustine’s Feast Day, Book Week and The School Open Afternoon are events occurring next week. The manner we will celebrate these events are detailed in this newsletter. As a commu-nity feel very welcome and know that you are invited to participate in all these school events Together in Faith, Together in Science, Learning for Life.
