Word Alert!• Helps students activate prior knowledge and self-assess
their knowledge of words that they will be reading;
• Teachers preselect words that will appear in the text that are
important to the text;
•Room is left on the sheet for students to add words;
•Every student receives a copy of Word Alert!
•Before reading, students complete the first column by noting
with a “Y” (Yes) or “N” (No) whether they know the word;
•If students know the word, they move to the next column
and write how they know the word and what it means;

• While reading, students look to confirm their
definition;
•While reading, students look for the actual definition
and note a page number so they can refer back if
needed;
•After reading, students discuss the preselected words
and any new words added in relationship to the text;
