In the 1980’s, Bo Jackson took the sports world by storm when he dominated in Major League Baseball and the National
Football League. Shortly after that, Deion Sanders followed Jackson’s footsteps as the next two-sport athlete to gain notoriety. Today, Salem State University has its own two-sport athlete pursuing the likes of Jackson and Sanders. His
name: Keaton Cashin.
Cashin began his hockey career at the age of 5 after learning how to skate when he was 3 years old. He joined the men’s
hockey team at SSU as a freshman in 2013 after a successful tenure at Masconomet Regional High School. Altogether,
Cashin’s hockey career has lasted almost 20 years.
Cashin, now in his senior season, has a chance to go out on top as the Vikings enter the Massachusetts State Collegiate
Athletic Conference Tournament as the top seed.
“I love the guys on the team,” Cashin said. “Everyone’s working really hard this year. This is the winningest season we’ve
had in Coach [Bill] O’Neil’s career. It’s pretty awesome to have a chance at a run at the NCAA’s.”
“It’s the last season of my career. I want to go out with a bang. I want to make sure we go as far as possible,” he added.
“Going 20-5 before the playoffs is awesome. I want to finish my career the right way and I think I’m doing that.”
Cashin joined the rugby team last spring after enduring a difficult stage in his life. He was encouraged to pick up the sport
by his brother Austin, one of the team’s leading scorers.
“To be honest I was going through a tough time my junior year,” Cashin said. “I was distracted by some things and I saw
myself getting out of shape. Every day my brother Austin told me to join the rugby team. He told me I’d love the sport.
One day I just got myself to do it and ever since then it’s changed my life.”
Cashin’s attempt to pick up a second sport in rugby has been a successful one, as he stands as the starting 8-man on a team
set to compete for a national championship in April.
“There’s nothing better than calling yourself a two-time National Champion in two sports you love,” Cashin said.
“Rugby’s undefeated and I can easily see us going all the way. In hockey we have six possible games left. It’s a lot of
work but we can get it done. Plus you leave a little behind at Salem State. People will remember what I was able to do in
helping win those championships. It’d be a great thing.”
Cashin credited the success of the rugby team to a core group of seniors, some of which were members of the Vikings’
inaugural season back in 2013.
“Those guys that have been there for the past three years, I give them so much credit for building this program,” he said.
“Those guys deserve a lot of credit for what they’ve done. Because of that, I’m willing to help them win a national title
and I’ll do whatever it takes.”

In terms of differences between the two sports, Cashin noted that rugby’s non-stop tempo is distinct when compared to
hockey’s shifts.
“The biggest difference is rugby is an 80-minute game and it’s non-stop,” Cashin said. “You have to stay ready for the
whole game and know your role. You’re constantly going and always thinking. In hockey you go out for your shift, you
come off, and you think about what you can do better for your next shift.”
As for the similarities between the two sports, Cashin said that physicality is a major factor. Momentum also plays a big
role in both sports.
“They’re both team sports. It takes every single player to win games,” he said. “The hitting, the intensity of them are great.
Hitting in rugby contributed to the physicality I play with in hockey. The momentum shifts are also similar. A goal or a
try can change a game.”
Cashin will graduate with a degree in Exercise Science and a minor in Business in May. Unsure of his next move in life,
he said he wants to remain open to all possibilities.
“I don’t know what I want to do yet,” he said. “I’m going to try new things and find what I like to do. I’m not 100% sure
what I want to do with my life, but I’m just looking to open doors.”
