Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship Program

About the scholarship

• Offers grants for U.S. citizen undergraduate students of limited financial means to pursue academic studies abroad.

• Such international study is intended to better prepare U.S. students to assume significant roles in an increasingly global economy and interdependent world.

Benefits

• Over 2,300 scholarships of up to $5,000 will be awarded – Award amounts will vary depending on the length of

study and student need with the average award being approximately $4,000.

• Students who apply for and receive the Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship to study abroad are then eligible to receive a Critical Need Language Award from the Gilman Scholarship Program of $8,000.

Benefits

• Provides financial support that can be used for program and non-program costs (i.e. program tuition, room and board, books, local transportation, insurance and international airfare)

• Opportunity to learn about other students’ study abroad experiences

• Offers information about other opportunities related to international education and travel

Eligibility• Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship Program is open to all U.S.

citizen undergraduates, in good academic standing, who meet the criteria listed below:

1. The applicant must be receiving a Federal Pell Grant or provide proof that he/she will be receiving a Pell Grant at the time of application or during the term of his/her study abroad program or internship.

2. The applicant is applying to or has been accepted into a study abroad program or internship eligible for credit by the student's accredited institution of higher education in the U.S.

3. The applicant is studying or interning abroad for at least four weeks in one country. Programs going to more than one country are eligible if the student will be in one country for at least four consecutive weeks.

4. The applicant is studying or interning abroad in any country except Cuba or a country on the U.S. Department of State's current Travel Warning list.

• Online certifications from the applicant’s study abroad and financial aid advisor

• 2 essays required as part of the application – Statement of Purpose Essay

– Follow-on Service Project Proposal• explain how you will give back by inspiring others to pursue their

own experiences abroad– Limited to 7,000 characters per essay.

About

• Up to $20,000 to U.S. undergraduate students to study abroad in areas of the world that are critical to U.S. interests and underrepresented in study abroad, – Africa, Asia, Central & Eastern Europe, Eurasia,

Latin America, and the Middle East.

• Must be interested in studying less commonly taught languages

Eligibility• U.S. citizenship• A high school graduate, or have earned a GED• Applying to a study abroad program that meets home

institution standards in a country outside of Western Europe, Canada, Australia, or New Zealand.

• Matriculated in an undergraduate degree program located within the United States accredited by an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education. Boren Scholars must remain matriculated in their undergraduate programs for the duration of the scholarship and may not graduate until the scholarship is complete.

Award Amounts

• Maximum scholarship awards are: – $8,000 for a summer program (special initiative

for STEM students only; 8 weeks minimum)– $10,000 for a semester – $20,000 for a full academic year

Application Process

1. Contact your Boren campus representative for your on-campus deadline. Continue to work with your campus representative during the application process. (Takeo)

2. Submit the Boren Scholarship application, which includes the items listed below. Before starting the online application, remember to read the application instructions. – a study abroad program section– a budget section– two statements of purpose

Application Process Cont.3. Submit the following supplementary materials to your campus representative. If you

do not have a campus representative, you may send them directly to IIE. – Completed letters of reference. Letters of reference must be signed, original letters in an

envelope with the signature across the seal, when they are submitted to your campus representative or IIE. Two letters are required, and you may include a third optional letter. Click here for advice about getting strong letters of reference.

– Official, hard copy, transcripts from all colleges and universities attended. Freshmen must also include high school transcripts.

– Language self-assessment - Complete this form using the Language self-assessment guide.

– Language proficiency form (optional) - Complete this form using the Language Evaluation Guidelines.

– Choose one of the following:• One page study abroad program description with cost information. (This may be a

page from the program’s website or a photocopy of part of the program brochure.) • If you set up a direct enrollment or individually arranged study abroad program,

please provide two letters of support. The first letter should be from your home institution and the second letter should be from your overseas host institution.

Application Process Cont

The online application must be submitted, and the supplementary materials should be given to your Boren campus representative, by your on-campus deadline. If you do not have a campus representative, the online application must be submitted, and all original supplementary materials must arrive at the following address, by the application deadline. IIE cannot confirm receipt of materials, so campus representatives and applicants should send materials using a traceable method to ensure delivery.

Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship

About

• Students interested in a career in mathematics, the natural sciences, or engineering are invited to apply to the Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence in Education Program.

• Each scholarship covers eligible expenses for undergraduate tuition, fees, books, and room and board

• Maximum of $7,500 annually– 2 year maximum for juniors– 1 years maximum for seniors

Eligibility• Be a full-time sophomore or junior pursuing a degree

at an accredited institution of higher education• Have a college grade-point average of at least "B" (or

the equivalent) and be in the upper fourth of his or her class.

• Be a United States citizen, a permanent resident, or, in the case of nominees from American Samoa or the Commonwealth of the Mariana Islands, a United States national. – Nominations from permanent residents must include a

letter of the nominee's intent to obtain U.S. citizenship and a photocopy of the Permanent Resident Card (formerly known as the Alien Registration Card).

Documents

• Nominee essay—written by the student and relates to the student's chosen career

• Current college transcript from nominee's institution, including fall semester if available

• Other transcript(s) from institutions, that nominee attended with grades for courses taken

• Copy of the nominee's Permanent Resident card and letter of intent to become U.S. citizen, if nominee's citizenship status is permanent resident.

Udall Undergraduate Scholarship

Eligibility

• Be committed to a career related to the environment, OR committed to a career in tribal public policy OR Native American health care.

• Be a full-time sophomore or junior-level student at a two-year or four-year accredited institution of higher education, pursuing a bachelor's or associate's degree.

• Have a college grade-point average of at least a "B" or the equivalent.

• Be pursuing full-time study.• Be a U.S. citizen, U.S. national, or U.S. permanent

resident.

Benefits

• Up to $5000 for tuition, room and board, or other educational expenses.

• 4 day Udall Scholars Orientation in Tucson, Arizona – meet with other Scholars, elected officials, and other

environmental and tribal leaders. – All Scholars are required to attend this event in August.

Travel, lodging, and meals will be provided by the Foundation.

• Access to an active and growing alumni network of environmental, Native American health and tribal policy professionals.

Fulbright Fellowships

• Provides grants for individually designed study/research projects or English Teaching Assistantships

• During their grants, Fulbrighters will meet, work, live with and learn from the people of the host country, sharing daily experiences.

• Grant lengths and dates vary by country.

costs, based on the cost of living in the host country

Eligibility

• U.S. citizenship at the time of application. Permanent residents are not eligible.

• B.A. degree or the equivalent conferred before the start of the grant

• Good health, grantees will be required to submit a satisfactory Medical Certificate from a physician

• Proficiency in the written and spoken language of the host country

• Doctors of Medicine may receive grants for advanced academic study, but not for internships or residencies.
