GENEROSITYMATTERS
Life-Changing By Sue Dollard
Who could have guessed becoming a resident at
Oakwood would change my life so completely?
After living in a condominium where I didn’t see
another person for days and was lonely and depressed,
moving here was the blessing of a lifetime.
There are many chances to lend a helping hand
to those coping with the challenges of aging and
volunteer otherwise lonely hours. I enjoy spending
a few hours in the gift shop, going on outings, and
helping push wheelchairs so others can get out.
When I discovered the beautiful, peaceful
Resurrection Chapel, I became aware of the Oakwood
Foundation and that I could help people living both
on and off Oakwood’s campus.
I see firsthand my contributions are helping my
neighbors and friends.

“ I grew up with a grandfather clock, kept by my grandfather. We could look, but not touch. Now, I’m the one responsible for winding it on
schedule every week. It brings back memories every time I hear it chime.”
OAKWOOD FOUNDATION, INC. | SUMMER 2019
YOU MAKE CONTINUING CARE POSSIBLE Oakwood provided $2.3 million in charitable care in 2018.
The majority of this care goes to those who have outlived
their resources in skilled nursing care. Donors helped cover
$500,000 in services.
Thanks to your generous support, gifts to the Continuing
Care Endowment Fund will cover $550,000 in unreimbursed
care at Oakwood in 2019. Your gifts help ensure Oakwood
can continue to provide care to those who need it, and your
impact is growing.
COVER STORY CONTINUED
All of us at Oakwood face some of life’s
biggest and most challenging decisions,
but we are not alone. Every staff member
is committed to helping residents. After
being alone for many years and having
to do it all myself, it is wonderful to have
their care and support. Every one of them,
no matter their job, will stop and help a
resident with a task or concern.
We all fear the unknown to some extent
and wonder how we will manage when
we can’t take care of ourselves.
I do too, but I’ve seen firsthand the
reassurance the Foundation provides
to residents, if and when that becomes
necessary. I have felt the impact of
knowing you are safe and protected.
I don’t think there is a greater blessing.
I wanted to be part of that, a small part
of helping residents in need by giving to
the Continuing Care Endowment Fund.
My life at Oakwood is truly wonderful.
Each day filled with opportunities of all
kinds. Those opportunities enrich my life,
and the life of every resident.

96% AND RISING! You and many other generous donors like you are closing in on
the ambitious $325,000 fund raising goal to enhance the nearly-
completed campus expansion on the Prairie Ridge campus.
Your gifts enhanced the Tree of Life Chapel, created more
education opportunities for residents and staff, upgraded the
Community Center with the new Acorn Club Fitness Center
and Studio, added areas on each level of The Rise assisted living
facility which residents can enjoy with family and friends,
and changed the campus landscape with a new park and
landscaped courtyards.
If you are interested in helping Prairie Ridge reach its fundraising
goal, please contact Dave Mossner at (608) 230-4441.
Sandy Person and Ron Baeseman were glad a labyrinth was included in the new
Tree of Life Chapel. Others have asked the couple about the labyrinth. Baeseman
says it’s a tradition that traces back to the Middle Ages, intended for prayer and
meditation. Sandy uses the pattern to meditate, “If I’m just thinking about my
breathing while I walk the labyrinth, it leaves me feeling peaceful.”

YOUR GIFTS TO OAKWOOD…
…Allow for quiet contemplation.
Pat Henry says his wife Dee finds
satisfaction in doing something
new and interesting in playing the
drums. Dee has dementia. Pat credits
Music Therapist Melissa Cole for
adding meaning and pleasure to
Dee’s life and others in the class.
“She (Melissa) is very expressive
facially. When she sees the group is
beginning to get it, she is excited
and praises them, letting them know
they are getting it. This is the way to
do it and that’s good.”
Gene Dewey enjoys checking on
his gardens to see what’s performing.
University Woods Horticulturist
Savannah Conradt says Gene is
passionate about flowers, so
much that he developed his own.
“I developed one I thought was
pretty nice,” says Gene, “it’s nice to
have a registered Daylilly…I call it
the Fox Avenue Favorite.”

Helene Radbill learned to knit during World War II,
taught by other girls in the office. Her first project
was knitting 12 pairs of socks, which she gave to her
husband on their honeymoon. When she moved to
Oakwood, Helene quickly joined the Yarners. She
still knits nearly every day, loving the creativity
and sharing her creations.

When Kathy Borner moved into her Pioneer Prairie
apartment eight years ago, she didn’t use the bus often.
Now it’s more each year. “I just love the mental stimulation
and the variety of activities. It’s comfortable being with my
Oakwood extended family on the bus!” The Ridge Runner
is used in a variety of ways, including day trips and trips to
the store.
GIVE AND RECEIVE You may want to learn about the Oakwood Foundation’s Charitable Gift Annuity (CGA) program. A CGA pays
you guaranteed payments for life. Afterwards, the balance of the CGA benefits the area of Oakwood you want
to help. Donors may create an Oakwood CGA with a gift of $5,000 or more.
If you would like to learn more about creating a Charitable Gift Annuity, please contact Dave Mossner at
