I was intrigued tohear more aboutThe Seasons ArtClass, which is heldin a semi-rural partof Newbury (withexcellent parking!) SoI went to see them atwork one afternoon.
It was interesting to know thatthese classes take place ona weekday, with a choice ofmornings or afternoons, whichcould be perfect for those whohave a free three hour slot intheir week. With a wide rangeof people who attend, from newmums/dads to parents whosechildren have gone to uni, toretirees. It’s suitable for anyonebetween the ages of 19 to 99!
The first thing that struck meabout the Class was a lovelyCommunity spirit. Youngpeople and the not so young allsupporting and enjoying timeout together - and the energy
and enthusiasm which seemedto be generated throughout.
I saw people helping others- experimenting - discussing- having a laugh - generallyrelaxed and with a mind-setto enjoy the whole afternoon.
Carrie says: “Encouragementis what we all need - and ofcourse no one should feeluneasy or self-conscious.Everyone is a beginner oran improver - everyone iswelcomed and regardedequally in that respect. Afterthe step-by-step demo at thebeginning of each class, bothLiam and I go around the roomand give extra one-to-oneguidance to everyone - sono-one gets left behind.”
It did not surprise me at allwhen Carrie told me that mostpeople, having booked onone course come back timeand again to enjoy a ‘different’season’- and a new course.
Both Carrie and Liam arepassionate that everyone,
can have fun painting - eventhose who have no confidencewhatsoever in their ability!Tempted? Why not give it ago? Find out more detailsabout this very popular courseand see page opposite.

Close your eyes and thinkback to the simple pleasuresof childhood: a rainbow boxof crayons on the table and, beside it, a book of illustrationsjust waiting to be colouredin. Remember the intenseconcentration as you filled inthe blank spaces with yourfavourite shades of yellow, red, purple, green and blue? Now fast-forward to the presentday, when high-tech gadgetsand gizmos allow us to createsophisticated and brightlycoloured designs with just a fewmouse clicks. Such innovationsshould have consigned thehumble crayon to the dustbinof history, so it’s amazing tolearn that in the second decadeof the 21st century one of themost popular hobbies is adultcolouring. It has become a globalphenomenon, spreading tocountries as diverse as Braziland New Zealand. In fact theinterest is so great that theworld’s largest wooden pencilmanufacturer, Faber-Castell,has been forced to increaseshifts at its German factory inorder to keep up with demand.Printers and booksellers havealso seen a stratospheric risein the popularity of colouring
books created for the adultmarket. Millie Marotta’s AnimalKingdom, Johanna Basford’sSecret Garden (now translatedinto 14 different languages)and Emma Farrarons’ TheMindfulness Colouring Bookfeature high on the UK’sbestseller lists.Mindfulness, with its emphasison being aware of the presentmoment, fits particularly wellwith this hobby becausecolouring is essentially arepetitive, undemanding activitythat can be used to focus themind. Colourists claim that theirhobby can lead to a calmer, almost meditative frame of mindand this view is supported byclinical psychologist Dr DavidHolmes: “With our workaholicculture, we spend most ofour lives in ‘beta mode’,which is when we’re alert,problem-solving, decision-making. By actively alteringthe preponderance of certainbrain patterns, you can shift into‘alpha mode’, which is more likethe state of mind we have aschildren. Meditation and similartechniques require learning andpractice, whereas anyone canjust drop into colouring-in.”Colouring may seem like asolitary pastime but it can alsobecome a social activity: in
recent years colouring clubsand parties have provedpopular, particularly in Americaand France. The LadiesColoring Club is a FacebookGroup based in the US whichlinks to groups around theworld. Alternatively you couldstart your own group like 38-year-old Suzanne Parsonagefrom Bristol, who launched acolourists group from her localpub. Many local libraries alsohost adult colouring sessions. If you are eager to try colouringfor yourself but don’t want toinvest in a book of illustrationsjust yet, go online anddownload some free printablepages. You’ll find some greatlibrary printables at www.pinterest.com that will help youdecide whether adult colouringis for you. If you are feeling thatthis hobby is a little too childish, you’ll be relieved to hear thata recent article in Directormagazine identified a growingtrend amongst business leaderswho have taken up colouring inorder to alleviate stress. So grab a box of crayons orfelt-tips and make a start. Itseems there’s every reasonto add a little colour to youreveryday life - and all you needto worry about is keeping withinthe lines!

Set up in 1949 in northernCroatia, the Plitvice Lakesare the oldest national park inthe country and the largest, covering close to 300 squarekilometres. There, on the edgeof the rugged Dinaric Alps, rocks and water have created aunique landscape protected byUNESCO and one of the mostimpressive karst formations inthe world.Yet just 400 years ago, thewhole area was inaccessible, draped in mystery and legendsfrom buried treasures to thekind-hearted Black Queen whogave water to the poor. In the18th century, it was describedin turn as ‘five beautiful lakesin the densest wood’ and ‘thedevil’s garden’. But those whocome here today know thatneither is true: there is no devilin this natural paradise butthere are 16 beautiful lakes forall to see.The twelve upper lakesand four lower lakes are allconnected, divided by naturallimestone barriers shaped bywater, wind and plants andcreating myriad waterfalls. The highest is the aptly named‘Large Waterfall’, swollen by thePlitvica river and tumbling down78 metres into the final sectionof the lower lakes. Just a
stone’s throw away, the sourceof the Korana is said to be themost beautiful in karst country, heading through the canyontowards a bucolic village dozingin flower meadows.Meanwhile, footpaths andsingle-file boardwalks meanderfrom one magical lake to thenext, festooned in waterfalls, canyons and caves, andwhatever the crowds, littledisturbs the peace but therumbling of cascades andbird song. There are popularviewpoints and secludedcorners, steps here and thereand for those who want to takeit easy, rides on an electricboat across Lake Kozjak or apanoramic train in the upperlevels. But nothing beats a leisurelystroll where lush scenery andfresh air quieten mind, bodyand soul. The lakes beckon, more bewitching the closeryou are. Azure, silvery grey, deep blue or emerald green, shimmering in the sun ormirroring a darkening sky, theyare for ever changing as lightand shade filter through theabundant foliage along thebanks. The lower lakes glitter througha rocky canyon, the upper
lakes nestle among forestedslopes rising to 1,279 metres.Mediterranean and Alpineplants mingle with fir, spruceand beech and in the remoteareas of the north-west, treesare up to 700 years old. Over1,100 plant species have beenrecorded in the park, including75 endemic and 55 differentorchids. Gentians and liliesadd colour in the undergrowthand grassy bells and wildhyacinths grow alongsideendangered species such asthe carnivorous round leafsundew. Spring heather, beardgrass and mint are also foundalong the lakes where mapleand sumac trees turn all shadesof red and gold in autumn.Wild cats, lynx, deer andwolves all live in the park butthe brown bear has becomethe true symbol of the PlitviceLakes. Yet visitors on a day tripfrom the beach are far morelikely to spot the butterflies,an Orange Tip, a PaintedLady, a Red Admiral, to namejust a few, and at least someof the 105 species of birds, woodpeckers, grebes, larks, finches and others, or perhapsa rare golden eagle hoveringin the thermals high above theglistening lakes.

Individual Savings Accountswere first introduced in 1999.They provided exemptionfrom income tax and capitalgains tax, and quickly becamea popular place to save andinvest.Back then, it was astraightforward choice betweena Cash ISA or a Stocks andShares equivalent, but withseven different types ofIndividual Savings Accountnow available, making theright choice is much morecomplicated. So how do you know whichISA is best for you, and evenwhether you’re eligible toapply? We take a look at thedifferent ISA accounts available,to identify which ones might suityour needs.Instant access cash IsaA straightforward tax-freesavings account offered bybanks and building societies- interest rates have fallenconsiderably in recent years, but it’s also a risk-free way toput your money to one side. You get instant access to yoursavings, and need to be at least16 years of age to open thisaccount.stocks and shares IsaStocks and Shares ISAs are
open to anyone aged 18 orover. The money is dividedbetween various investmentproducts, including companyshares, government andcorporate bonds, and unittrusts.Although as an investmentthere’s greater risk with aStocks and Shares ISA, youcan control your exposureto it by splitting your annualallowance between this and aCash ISA.JunIor IsaParents can save for theirchildren in a Junior ISA. It’sopen to children under the ageof 18, but the child can onlyopen an account if they areaged 16 or over. The annualallowance currently stands at£4,080, but a child betweenthe ages of 16 and 18 canalso open an adult ISA, whichboosts their saving capacity.help to Buy IsaA fairly recent addition to theISA family, the Help to Buy ISAwas introduced in December2015 in an attempt to boostthe first-time buyer market. For every £4 saved, thegovernment has pledged to adda £1 bonus (up to a maximumof £3,000), making it a greatway to save for a deposit on afirst property.InherItance IsaTo avoid having to pay taxon a deceased partner’sISA savings, the Chancellorintroduced the facility to inherittax-free from December 2014.From the date of a spouse’sdeath, the surviving partner isgranted an Additional PermittedSubscription (APS) for the total
amount in the account, and hasthree years in which to use it.lIfetIme IsaThe Lifetime ISA will beintroduced from 2017, and is forpeople between the ages of 18and 39. A 25% bonus from thegovernment is available, so forevery £4 saved they will put in£1 up to a maximum of £1,000.It can be used towards thepurchase of a house up to thevalue of £450,000, otherwiseyou need to keep the money inthe account until the age of 60to avoid a penalty.InnovatIve fInance IsaThis is seen to be a riskierchoice for investors, but onethat potentially brings higherreturns. One of the risks is thatyour money won’t be protectedby the Financial ServicesCompensation Schemebecause the banks are notinvolved. You place your money withpeer-to-peer lending platforms, which could attract a higherrate of interest than with Cashor Stocks and Shares ISAs. Atthe time of writing, however, there are only eight such onlinelenders offering this type of ISA.

Many years ago in London’sfamous Portobello market, Icame across a grimy old boxmade of wood. At first glancedidn’t look like anything special, but on closer inspection I sawthat some fine veneer work wasvisible in places.“Ten quid. A bit of wire wool andsome washing up liquid straightout of the bottle, and that’llcome up lovely.”It sounded unlikely, but I paidthe stallholder and took the boxhome, where I nervously beganto rub the surface with a steelwool pad. As the dirt meltedaway I uncovered an intricateinlaid marquetry design, and mygrimy box eventually emergedas a beautiful antique that I’veloved ever since.Although I was successful, Isuspect most experts hearingof my method would tear outtheir hair. Remember thesepoints before starting your ownprojects:• Some antiques are valued for
their patina and certain items– such as old coins – shouldnever be polished.
• Check very old items forcracks that may break duringcleaning.
• If in any doubt, do someresearch or ask an expert.
• Avoid using harsh chemicals
or abrasive cloths.here are ten tips for restoringyour vintage bargains:• To remove general grime from
old prints, gently roll a pieceof doughy, fresh bread overthe surface.
• To remove old, rusted-inscrews, first clean aroundscrew head edges, heat thescrew head with a hot air gun, then the turn screw a littleTIGHTER, before undoing(use caution with heat if theobject has a varnished orpainted finish).
• Age marks on porcelaincan be removed by soakingovernight in baby bottlesterilizing liquid.
• Use Steradent tablets to getrid of water marks in old glassvases.
• For a bright shine, polishchrome with baby oil andcotton wool.
• To clean a gilded object, usea clean white cotton cloth, cotton balls or Q-tips, andthe barest amount of clean, cool water. After you havedampened the cleaningmaterial, remove excessmoisture on a dry piece ofcloth before you apply it.
• Rub undiluted householdbleach into dirty hairlinecracks in pottery and rinse off,
to reduce the crack’s visibility.• Use half a lemon and salt to
clean brass and copper items.Apply, rinse off, dry carefullyand clean with impregnatedwadding, polishing finally witha soft cloth.
• To repair a pottery item, cleanthe pieces with a mixture ofmild dishwashing liquid andwarm water and let them drycompletely. Apply clear, slow-setting two part epoxy glueand hold the pieces in placewith modelling clay so theydon’t fall apart whilst drying.
• Remove dust and dirtymarks on old leather bydipping an artist’s paintbrushin methylated spirits. Usesparingly, working on a smallarea at a time.
Whenever you carry out arestoration project, you shoulddecide whether you want tokeep the item or sell it on beforeyou get started. If you want tokeep it, you can restore it toyour personal taste. If you’reselling, it’s wise to do someresearch on the current marketbefore you start restoration.Although it may seem strange, some buyers may actually wantthe rust stains and marks ofuse that show an item has beenhandled and loved for manyyears.

With summer well underway, many gardens are nowfeeling the need for a bitmore water than the rain isgiving them - it is hard tobelieve that not long agoall the plants were sufferingdue to excess rainfall andwaterlogged soil. Now it isimportant to forget those wetwinter days and concentrateon doing everything you canto keep your garden lookinggood, despite increasedtemperatures and soil that isdrier by the minute. There’sno doubt that you will needto do some watering, buthow can you minimise theamount you apply, make bestuse of what you’ve got andstill have a good-looking andproductive garden?
If possible, avoid makingnew plantings right now. Itwould be far better to waituntil the autumn because,if planted out now, mosttrees, shrubs and climberswill find it harder to getproperly established and aremore likely to suffer serioussetbacks too. However, if you
do have any planting that youreally can’t avoid, then makesure that you improve the soiltexture before you begin. Digand fork in plenty of gardencompost, well-rotted manureor other bulky organic matterso that the soil is betterequipped to retain moisture. This will make sandy soilhold water more effectivelybut you will also find it helpsto decrease the chances ofclay soil cracking. It may behard work but it will make lifea lot easier for the plants, and should also mean thatyou have to spend far lesstime watering later on.
It is never too late to mulch:it might be high summerbut it is still well worthwhilemulching beds, bordersand your vegetable plot.Mulching is often thought tobe something you have to doearly in the year, but providedthe soil is moist when you putthe mulch in place, it will stillserve you well. The mulchneeds to be 2” - 3” (5 - 7.5cm) deep and you can useshredded composted bark,
composted chipped bark, cocoa shells or many of thenumerous pebbles, shinglesand so forth which are nowavailable. If the soil is wellwatered before the mulchgoes on, then it will reallyhelp to keep moisture in thesoil and, as all the materialsI’ve suggested will let plentyof rain through, when itdoes rain the plants will stillbenefit. Applying a goodmulch will also help to keepdown weeds, which will notonly save you time but alsoprevent these thirsty plantsfrom taking up valuable soilmoisture.
In drier areas of your garden, try to use plants whichare particularly droughttolerant. Those with silveryor grey foliage such asthe lavenders, Sedums(ice plants), rock roses(Helianthemum), rosemaryand Convolvulus cneorumall tend to thrive in dryconditions, and are alsomore likely to do quite wellif planted now, as comparedto an average herbaceous or

Sweet PeasDeliciously scentedsweet peas are adream flower for everygarden. These easy togrow annuals actuallythrive on havingtheir flowers picked,so you can havethe pleasure of the aromatic blooms bothinside and outside your home. Keep cuttingthe flowers because if you let them go toseed, flowers will no longer be produced.
Sweet peas flourish in an open, sunny sitewith well-cultivated soil. They benefit fromthe addition of a small amount of well-rotted manure or organic compost. Feedwith a weak solution of flower-producingfertiliser during the summer. Create a canewigwam of twigs and raffia for them toscramble up and train the tendrils aroundit as they grow. Make sure that you make themost of any rain that doesfall by fitting a water diverterto the drain pipe which takeswater from the guttering fromyour greenhouse, house, conservatory or garage. Thiscan then divert the waterstraight into one or morewater butts when it doesrain. You can also fit a waterdiverter to the downpipewhich takes water from yourbath, hand basin or even thekitchen sink. Normal amountsof shampoo, bubble bathand washing up liquid shouldpose no threats to plants, and these detergents mayhelp with pest problems suchas greenfly. When you are watering,
always make sure thatyou do this in the eveningor extremely early in themorning, unless there’s noalternative. Watering at thesetimes of day will drasticallyreduce the amount of waterlost through evaporation, andalso means that there is farless chance of the foliage orflowers getting scorched - ascan happen if they are wettedin bright sunlight.
Where possible use awatering can or hose witha gentle nozzle attachmentand water only the areaswhere the water is needed. If the soil is very dry beforeyou start to water, thensprinkle the surface gentlywith a light drizzling ofwater and return again a
few minutes later - you willfind that the water sinks inand penetrates down to theroots much more effectively.Excessive watering on a verydry surface, particularly onewhich has become ‘capped’,is likely to lead to a lot of runoff and hence wastage.

1. the channel Islands - The Channel Islands were the only part of theCommonwealth occupied by Germany during the Second World War. OnJune 30 1940, two weeks after the government demilitarised the islands,Germany invaded and took control of Guernsey, then Jersey, Alderney(where they built four concentration camps), and lastly Sark on July 4. Theoccupation lasted five years.
2. deal, kent - In 1495, a pretender to the throne named Perkin Warbeck landed at Deal to summonup support for his claim to the throne by alleging that he was one of the Princes in the Tower, whose disappearance led to the accession of Richard III. Warbeck’s invasion, however, wasscuppered and after a second attempt in 1497 he was imprisoned and executed.
3. the Isle of Wight - In 1377, at the height of the Hundred Years’ War, the French launched a seriesof attacks along the English Channel and invaded the Isle of Wight, seizing town after town enroute to Carisbrooke Castle. The castle remained impenetrable, however, and after a lengthy siegethe French eventually abandoned the island.
4. lindisfarne, northumberland - Lindisfarne was attacked in what is considered to be the firstViking raid on the English coast in 793. Not as rampageous as later attacks, it nevertheless leftmuch of the island’s 7th century priory desecrated. Viking raids continued for more than twocenturies.
5. pevensey, east sussex - It was at Pevensey that William the Conqueror – then William, Duke ofNormandy – first landed in England in 1066, one month before the Battle of Hastings. Still shocking the communityHeartstart Thatcham and defibrillators
Heartstart Thatchamteaches Emergency LifeSupport (ELS) skills. Theskills include signs of a heartattack, cardiac arrest andCardiopulmonaryresuscitation (CPR).
What is a heart attack?
A heart attack is a restrictionin the blood supply to theheart, a plumbing issue.
What is a cardiac arrest?
A cardiac arrest is where theheart is no longer pumpingblood around the body, it isan electrical issue.
A casualty in cardiac arrestis unconscious and notbreathing, or not breathingnormally. The casualtystands the best chance ofsurvival with bystanderintervention in the form ofcalling 999 and startingCPR.
The chance of survival canbe increased further byusing a defibrillator. In
theory this stops the heartfibrillating. The heart shouldthen start beating normally.
Thus in 2014 the teamstarted to raise funds forand install AutomatedExternal Defibrillators(AEDs) around the area toallow a casualty the bestpossible chance of survivinga cardiac arrest. The teamhave installed over 30devices at locationsincluding Thatcham,Newbury, East Woodhay,Calcot and Bucklebury.
There are manymisconceptions about AEDsso a few facts to clear theseup:
¥ AEDs will not shock acasualty unless they needa shock.
¥ All AEDs talk to you tellingyou what to do.
¥ You need no training touse, i.e. anyone can usethem.
¥ Codes for locked cabinetsare given out by theambulance call handlervia 999 only.
Using CPR together with anAED will give a casualty thebest possible chance ofsurvival. The courses, whichare free, help take the fear
awaypeople have ofusing such a device.
Most people also thinkcardiac arrest happens tothe elderly or unfit butanyone can suffer a cardiacarrest. Indeed there are 12young people a week thatwill die as a result of a heartcondition, perhaps onewhere a defibrillator couldhave made a difference. Thus these AEDs not onlycan be used by anyone butpotentially could be used onanyone, thus helping toprotect the entirecommunity.
The team have taught theseskills, skills that can and dosave lives, to hundredsthroughout Thatcham,Newbury and thesurrounding area and do sofor free.
To find out more or to comealong and learn these skillsplease contact the team.
