Mark Brennan Director of Technical and Engineering - Hawkei Land & Air Systems / Protected Vehicles, Thales Group

Mark is a Director of Engineering with over 22 years’ experience in the Australian Defence industry. He has worked across engineering domains primarily in Test & Evaluation and Systems Engineering, with 18 years in Thales across multiple business areas.

Mark’s key responsibilities include; providing technical leadership for the engineering function spanning design practices, system engineering, system integration, test & evaluation, R&D, and configuration management for the Protected Vehicles (PRV) Business Line; holding delegated Design Authority and being responsible for the technical integrity of solutions and services; being the Job Family Champion for Thales Australia’s Systems Engineering group; project initiation – including defining team structures and skill requirements, and estimating, budgeting and scheduling for complex system developments; and closing out development projects by achieving customer acceptance through strategically planned T&E programs.

Professor Ian Gibson FIEAust

Professor of Industrial Design, School of Engineering, Deakin University

Professor Ian Gibson is the chair of Industrial Design in the School of Engineering, Faculty of Science, Engineering and the Built Environment, Deakin University, Australia.

Ian is a world-renowned specialist in Additive Manufacturing, having co-authored the Springer book Additive Manufacturing, which is now in its 2nd edition and the 1st edition selling around 50,000 real and soft copies combined. He is also co-editor of the Rapid Prototyping Journal, which has been running for 20 years and continues to be the foremost research publication in its field. He has worked in top educational institutions in the UK, Hong Kong and Singapore and now brings that knowledge and expertise to Deakin.

At Deakin, Professor Gibson is located at the Centre for Advanced Design in Engineering Training, which is the home of the School of Engineering on the Waurn Ponds campus.

Dr Erol Harvey CEO, MiniFAB

Dr. Erol Harvey is co-founder and CEO of MiniFAB, a developer and manufacturer of lab-on-a-chip diagnostic devices. Started in 2002, MiniFAB currently manufactures millions of nano-precise plastic medical diagnostic devices each year for clients around the world.

With a PhD in Plasma and Laser Physics from Monash University, he spent time in Oxford UK before returning to Australia. Erol has been involved in the commercialization of micro and nano technologies for more than 25 years and has global experience in working in and with major multinationals, start-ups and SMEs, Universities and Government Research Labs.

He is a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Technology and Engineering (ATSE), and has served on many Government Councils and Advisory Boards. In 2011 MiniFAB was awarded the inaugural “Enabling Technology Company of the Year” and in recognition of achievements in entrepreneurship in emerging technology in 2012 he was awarded Enabling Technology Entrepreneur of the Year by the Victorian Government Manufacturing Hall of Fame.

Professor Guy Littlefair FIEAust

Pro Vice-Chancellor Industry & Strategic Partnerships, Deakin University

Professor Guy Littlefair is Pro Vice-Chancellor Industry Development at Deakin University. He is a senior academic leader with over ten years’ experience developing and implementing strategies, objectives and policies and navigating change to effectively manage the financial and human resources of university operating units in Australia and New Zealand. Guy has an exceptional 25+ year record in engineering industry, research and academia.

Previously the Dean of Engineering at Deakin University, Professor Littlefair is internationally regarded as an expert in the field of advanced manufacturing, having led teams of researchers in UK, New Zealand and now Australia focusing on the processing of materials. In these leadership capacities Professor Littlefair has worked with some of the world’s most innovative research-led organizations, including Rolls Royce, DeBeers, Toyota, Jaguar Land Rover and QinetiQ.

Professor Littlefair was the Visionary and Architect of the $55M CADET Initiative at Deakin officially opened in 2015 which is seen as a benchmark for industry engagement and engineering education in Australia.

Professor Jennifer Loy Professor of 3D Design, Griffith University

Professor Jennifer Loy has a PhD in Industrial Design and background in design for mass production in the UK and Australia.

Her research interests focus on the impact of digital technology on manufacturing, product service systems and consumerism. She has a particular interest in designing for 3D Printing technologies.

Jennifer’s research collaborations are across disciplines, exploring the potential of transformative digital technologies in diverse situations, from humanitarian logistics and medical modelling, to digital fashion design and commercial product design. She is a speaker on designing for 3D printing around the world.

Ross Pilling Chair, Victoria's Advanced Manufacturing Advisory Council

Ross is a respected industry leader with a successful track record steering businesses through periods of rapid change including start-ups, post-merger integrations and business transformations.

He is Chair of Amaero Engineering Pty Ltd, Swinburne University’s Industry Research Advisory Committee and the Victorian state government’s Advanced Manufacturing Advisory Council. He is a member the Interim Advisory Board of EPA Victoria and the Innovation Investment Committee of the Innovative Manufacturing CRC. He was formerly the Deputy National President of the Australian Industry Group, and a longstanding board member of the Plastics and Chemicals Industry Association.

Ross’ senior executive career with leading multinational companies BASF and BOC included several General Manager and Managing Director roles in Asia, Australia and Europe. He brings an international, multi-cultural perspective to leadership.

He was elected a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Technology and Engineering in 2015 and awarded an Honorary Doctorate of Engineering by Swinburne University of Technology in 2016.

Ross has been married to Julie for 36 years, they have two adult sons and two granddaughters. He is a keen golfer with a range of community interests in arts, education, science and technology.

Professor Alexsandar Subic FIEAust

Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research and Development), Swinburne University of Technology

Professor Aleksandar Subic currently holds the position of Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research & Development) at Swinburne University of Technology. Prior to this appointment, Professor Subic was the Dean of Engineering and the Head of School of Aerospace, Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering at RMIT University. He is internationally recognised for his research in engineering design and advanced manufacturing, having led numerous global R&D projects in collaboration with industry leading to important translational research outcomes and impact.

Professor Subic hold positions on the Prime Ministers Industry 4.0 Taskforce, the Australian Advanced Manufacturing Council leaders group, Deputy Chair of the National Aerospace and

Aviation Industries Association, Director of Oceania Cybersecurity Centre, Director of SAE-A and on the Executive Committee of the Global Engineering Deans Council (GEDC). He served on the Excellence in Research for Australia (ERA) National Assessment Committee for Engineering and Environmental Sciences and on the research advisory panels of the Defence Materials Technology Centre and the European Engineering Research Council.

Prof Subic is an honorary Professor of Tsinghua University, Tianjin University and Nanjing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics, and a Fellow of the Institute of Engineers Australia (FIEAust), Fellow of the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) and Fellow of the International Energy Federation (IEF).
