the city register, did that little busi-ness, with much dignity and grace, accord-ing to the usual formula, after which thegeneral council dissolved into separatesessions.

In the board if alderman a resolutioncomplimentary to the retiring chairman,Mr. Thomas Moffet, was passed, and sev-eral other little complimentary formula-ries gone through.

In the board of oouncilmen Mr, Smithofi.red a resolution complimentary to theehairman of that board, which passedunanimously and eyas responded to byMr. Dunoan in modeat pbraaeo ogy.

Mr. Richsrdi then ceiled upon the gen-tlemen sec. to c ue forward, by wards,beginning with the fir st, and take theoatn of office. The oath of office wss ad-ministered by bis honor, the mayor, withgreat rapidity until the Seventh ward wascalled, when the two colored men prompt-ly responded by their presence. Themsyor then hesitate 1 and said that he hada protest against their taking seats asoouncilmen, which came up from a citissn of the Seventh ward. L. Berry as having been for a yearprevious in the employ of a planter nearGrenada, Mississippi, who had refusedto pay him ; that on this account he hadleft bim and was seeking employment,which he willingly accepted from Mr.Barry, who immediately pat him to work.As was afterward proved he picked a fewpounds of cotton, when night set in.After sapper he retired to rest, bat in themorning wss found to be non est. Hehad not exactly taken the wings of themorning, bat he had stolen horse of Mr.Berry's with which he msde rapid tracksto the city near which he was overhauledby Mr. Berry and his party, who firedupon him while he was trying to escapefrom them.
