Doctors, nurses, psychologists, physician assistants, ethicists, medical students, other health professionals…
Pursue your writing in an environment that provides maximum space for personal exploration and growth. Bring along work-in-progress (scholarly and/or creative). Experiment with new ways of writing – screenplays, novels, short stories, poems, personal accounts of difficult medical passages, ethical dilemmas, significant encounters with patients. Or simply bring a desire to write.
Mornings from nine to noon, participants will meet in the graceful Luhan House classroom to write and to discuss various aspects of writing, like how to grip a reader’s attention in a first paragraph or a last line. Afternoons will be free for scheduled writing consultations with faculty members, for optional small group meetings, and for solitary writing,
reflection, and communion with the beauty of Taos. Evenings will offer informal gatherings that include music, readings, videos, dancing, and distinguished visiting writers (John Nichols, Simon Ortiz, Demetria Martinez, Jimmy Santiago Baca, Ellen Meloy, Leslie Marmon Silko, Linda Hogan, Mark Spragg, Ana Castillo, David Sklar and Frank Huyler have been guests).
Too often in hospitals and clinics, in busy professional lives, there is no time for reflection. But here, left-out stories are told, shared, written. The writers are relaxed and energized. A synergy occurs, a mix of fellow writers, gorgeous surroundings, fabulous food, spontaneous encounters that add up to more than the sum of the parts.
CME credits (17 hours) available for physicians, physician assistants, and nurse practitioners.
2012 Faculty:Daniel Becker, MD practices and teaches internal medicine at the University of Virginia School of Medicine, where he also directs the Center for Biomedical Ethics and Humanities, edits the on-line literary journal Hospital Drive, and encourages colleagues and students to recognize and nurture their muse. He is the author of a chapbook of poems, Chance, has placed poems in various literary and clinical journals (semi-finalist for Pablu Neruda prize in Nimrod; semifinalist for Nagatuck River Review narrative poetry prize), and is currently working on a collection of stories, Doctored.
Jeanne Bereiter, MD is a child and adolescent psychiatrist and fellowship Training Director at the University of New Mexico School of Medicine where she also teaches writing for medical students, residents, and faculty. She has a background in family medicine and in creative writing. She is interested in the use of narrative to deepen understanding and has published personal and medical narratives in medical and literary journals.
Cost: $2,250 per participant. Includes six nights lodging (attractive private room with bath), three meals per day, and materials. (A spouse or adult companion is welcome to share the room, at an extra cost of $45/day for meals. The morning workshop, however, is for participants only.) Payment by check, credit card or PO. Space is limited to 15 participants. Reserve early. A non-refundable deposit of $750 will secure your reservation. Late registration (after June 17) is $2,350. A UNM tuition waiver may be used for $870.00 toward the tuition for UNM faculty and staff.
For more information about registration, call Lois Montoya at (505) 272-3942 or e-mail [email protected]. For more information about the content of the retreat, e-mail Jeanne Bereiter, [email protected].
To register, fill out registration form on reverse and mail or fax to UNM Office of Continuing Medical Education. Phone registrations are available with Visa or Mastercard.
