This Week’s Update
Dear Parents and Caregivers,
Now that students are back to school after a break it ’s a good time to chat with your child about safe behaviours when you walk or commute to school. Top tips: Here are our top tips to help our students make a safe trip: 1. Be alert and aware Take note of the dangers you come across on your walk and bring them to your child’s attention. Point out dangers, such as vehicles coming out of driveways. Talk to your child about being alert in a road environment. 2. Hold hands When on the footpath, at a crossing or in a car park always hold your child's hand. It is advised to do this up to the age of at least 8 years old and closely supervise until at least the age of 10. 3. Choose a safe crossing Lead by example and choose a safe place to cross the road. Explain why it is the safest place to cross. 4. Set a good example Your child watches everything you do, so if you cross at the crossing they will too. It is also important to share these messages with other carers who may walk with your child to school. 5. Stop, Look, Listen, Think every time you cross the road Discuss this important road safety message. STOP! one step back from the kerb. LOOK! continuously both ways. LISTEN! for the sounds of approaching traffic. THINK! whether it is safe to cross. Practise makes perfect The more supervised practice your child can get the better, so why not make Term 1 the start of a new routine to walk with your child to school more often. Older children may be ready to make the journey to school independently. Before they take this step, observe if they are road safe and reinforce the road safety messages.

Homework
At TWPS we focus on learning and not work. Research tells us the following about the impact of homework on children in primary school:
Homework offers no academic advantage. Instead, it overwhelms
struggling children and is boring for high achievers.
Homework is stressful. A study showed a direct relationship between time on
homework and increased anxiety, depression, anger, and other mood
disturbances among students.
As homework increases, national student achievement decreases. Data from
the Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study showed the overall
correlations between achievement and the percentage of teachers who used
homework in grading are all negative.
Homework increases family conflict. The more parents help with children’s
homework, the more tension children experience.
Homework reduces time for other activities such as sport, music, art, or other
extra-curricular activities.
Homework places additional burdens on parents - who often don’t know how to help their children anyway - and on teachers, who have enough to do with-out having to collect, mark, and redistribute extra work for their students on top of that required by the curriculum in schools. Research DOES indicate that ALL children should read each night. Reading is shown to increase academic achievement and aid in learning. Reading should not be for a set number of minutes or pages it needs to be enjoyable. Similarly, self-directed learning at home by completing projects of interest can aid in positive motivation and learning.
Have a great week. Chantal Mamo BTeach BEd MA Creative Arts

Deputy’s Message
Scripture and Ethics
Classes commence next week. Please note that to start the year there may a waiting list for
Ethics students. It is hoped and anticipated this will be able to be offered from term 2. Some
other grades across the school also have waiting lists for a placement in these classes.
This is due to the limited numbers that may be in a group and the availability of trained teach-
ers.
If you think your child has attended the wrong class, or if you have any questions regarding
your child’s placement, please contact the class teacher or me at school.
School Interviews
Individual Parent / Teacher Interviews are due to be held in week 10 and 11 of
term. The late evening will be Tuesday 2 April for year K– 2 and 9 April for year
3-6 where times are available until 7pm. A unique code for this will be pub-
lished to make bookings online.
Kind regards
Julie Granville
Deputy Principal
