Grade 12 Students:
In this information handout you will find contacts, mailing
addresses, application criteria and deadlines of various
scholarships, bursaries and awards. Please also watch and listen
for MEMOS and ANNOUNCEMENTS on various scholarships in
your Home Room. Many universities and colleges, businesses, and
organizations offer scholarships, bursaries and awards that you may
seek out through advertisements, word of mouth, and the internet.
The responsibility lies with you, the student, to investigate any and
all avenues where these scholarships, bursaries and awards may be
offered.
As mentioned, be sure to watch daily announcements, check
out This Week At Three Oaks, home room for memos, and the
Bursary Board in Student Services. These will give you all pertinent
information regarding various awards. Please be aware of the
“deadline” dates...these are very important. On average, the
information arrives the month prior to when the bursary is due.
As we approach the end of the school year, scholarships,
bursaries and awards start appearing quickly and often will have
shorter deadline dates. Many of these may require a copy of your
transcript, letters of recommendation, or perhaps an essay. Be sure
to allow yourself and staff members time to prepare any of these
requirements.
You are encouraged to read through this booklet to see what
you may qualify for. If you are uncertain of any of the information,
such as whether you meet the requirements...please, just ask.
Have a great and successful year!

Strive Scholarship Program
- STRIVE is a scholarship program sponsored by theRotary Club of Summerside that recognizes andrewards students in general, practical or academiccourses who show significant improvement in overallperformance in their senior year of high school. STRIVE challenges these students to improve theirschool achievements, gain self-confidence anddevelop post-secondary education goals.
- Students with 12 or more high school creditscompleted as of September and who could meet thecriteria for graduation in June, are eligible to applythrough the school Student Services Department. Applicants would sign the STRIVE contract agreeingto: attend classes regularly, work and study to the bestof their ability and continue to develop a positiveattitude.
- The progress of the applicants will be monitoredthroughout the school year as facilitated by thecounselors in Student Services. In June theinformation will be reviewed and the Student ServicesDepartment will determine the five recipients ofscholarships. These candidates will be presented withtheir scholarships at the high school graduation
ceremonies, by a member of the Rotary Club ofSummerside. Recipients will also be recognized withcertificates at a breakfast meeting of the Rotary Club.
- Students are required to make application foradmission and to obtain entrance into an approvedpost-secondary program. For Holland College, applications must be received by the end of Februaryand specify that they are possible Rotary ClubSTRIVE applicants.
- The Rotary Club of Summerside and the staff andstudents of Three Oaks Senior High School are allpartners in this program. By working together, we canpromote and foster a positive attitude which will helpour future leaders to succeed.
- Students who are accepted into STRIVE in their senioryear are offered an opportunity to “strive” for an entryscholarship to college, university, or a minimum twentyweek approved post-secondary training program. Thisinvolves a commitment between the student, theThree Oaks High School and the Rotary Club ofSummerside, wherein academic and counselingsupport is provided by the school, personal membercommitment and a $1,000.00 scholarship is promisedby the Rotary Club, and a change in work habits, attendance and study practice is promised by thestudent. Rather than having the criteria based solelyon high grades as with most scholarships, STRIVElooks at efforts to improve, and a student can show amove from ‘D’s to ‘C’s and still emerge with ameaningful entrance scholarship.
- The STRIVE Scholarship Program designates 5scholarships per year valued at $1,000 each, providedby the Rotary Club. Scholarships will be awardedtowards tuition at UPEI, Holland College or any other
similar institution off Island, or for any 20 week orlonger approved training course.
- This program has proven to be of significant benefit toall participants, not just those selected as recipients. There is a realization that a new start is possible andthat one is not alone. The support of the anonymousRotarians who set up the program and of thecommittee members as friends/mentors is a powerfulindicator to the students that the community isinterested in them.
