While investigations have not es-tablished a motive for the killing, friends and family of the deceased
are confident that the killer(s) wereknown to them.
“There is no way that they wouldhave let a stranger in,” said SheltonWitbooi, a close friend of the four.
“You can see that the door is notbroken, and they would have firstlooked out of the window to see whowas at the door before they let themin.
“I still can’t believe that these in-nocent lives have been taken fromus,” he said.
Yesterday morning friends andneighbours were still streaming in-to the home to pay their respects to

“Initially we thought it was only Massieand Farodene, because they were togetherfor most of the afternoon with Farodien cele-brating Labarang. The others must havejoined them during the night.”
Pastor Ivan Waldeck of the Western CapeCommunity Outreach was visiting the fami-
ly and condemned the killing, and similar in-cidents that had been taking place across theWestern Cape.
“While we don’t know the reason behindthis killing the loss of these lives is tragic forthe families.
“While the police are doing their best tofind the killers, we as the community mustalsoplayourpart in finding theperpetrators.I am calling on those who know anythingabout these crimes to call the police. Togeth-er we can fight crime but we must work to-
gether,” he said.Another close friend that did not want to
be named confirmed that the four were notinvolved with gang activities.
“I got out of jail threemonths agoandknewthem very well,” he said. “They were stillvery young but I always spoke to them aboutnot getting involved with gangs because itcould lead to disaster. This murder is a mys-tery to all of us,” he said.
At the time of going to press police had notmade any arrests in relation to the murders.

The timeliness of buses, reasonable fares, the safety with which bus drivers operateand courtesy of bus drivers are consideredimportant to passengers of Golden ArrowBus Services (GABS).
Non-availability of buses during week-ends and expensive fares are still consid-ered to be a thorn in passengers’ side.
This was revealed in a recent customer
satisfaction survey that was done among2 500 passengers of GABS. They did, how-ever, vote thebus service as themost trust-ing. This was established after a study bythe mathematics and physics departmentof the Cape Peninsula University of Tech-nology, in which 2 500 passengers partici-pated. The survey was commissioned byGABS, with the aim of measuring passen-
gers’ perception of services being offeredand their expectations.
John Dammert, corporate developmentmanager at GABS said: “As a public serv-ice provider, it is important that all ele-ments of the service are objectively meas-ured.” Respondents of the survey wererandomly selected for one-on-one inter-views.

Our technicon students are taking to thestars!
The ink has hardly dried after the Curio-sity rover landed on Mars, and now SouthAfrica is taking her rightful place in spacescience by sending her first CubeSat, ZA-CUBE-1, into space.
The satellite will leave our shores at thebeginning of September on its journey toRussia, via the Netherlands where it willbe integrated with other CubeSats fromacross the world. It will then be launchedinto space in November.
The CubeSat has been developed by post-graduate students of the French South Afri-can Institute of Technology (F’SATI) at theCape Peninsula University of Technology(CPUT) in Bellville and will be used for spa-ce science experiments.
Its activities will be monitored by theground station at FSATI’s premises and itis the first South African nano-satellite tobe launched.
An event marking the send-off ceremonyof the CubeSat was held yesterday at theGencor Building, CPUT Bellville Campus.
It was attended by important role playersin the space science industry and govern-ment.
Dr Val Munsami, Deputy Director Generalin the Department of Science and Technolo-gy, was the keynote speaker.
The satellite was also secured in its contai-ner for the journey into space during theevent. The FSATI programme is highly bac-ked by the Department of Science and Tech-
nology (DST) as part of a wider objective ofdeveloping thehumanpotential and intellec-tual capacity needed to grow a local spaceindustry.

“Ek het my hartvir die Here gegee en uiteindelikhet Jesus Christus my lewe kom

Kindersvan alle ouderdomsgroepe het gebaat by diéklereskenking. Persone wat kan help, kanIvan Jacobs by 021 902 1480 of 072 903 2408bel.

Fun was the order of the day atthe event held this past weekendin Wesbank.
The Mfuleni police this past Sun-day embarked on a play day withthe children of Wesbank.
In Wesbank, an area which hasbecome synonymous with gang vio-lence, poverty and crime, police areperceived to be crime fighters, butduring this event, police were thereto have some fun.
Capt Nomathemba Muavha said:“It was all joy and happiness for thecommunity of Wesbank today,
when they were woken up by the po-lice who were there to play and in-teract with the children.”
She says the aim of this day wasto create a conducive environmentfor the women and children ofWesbank.
“Western Cape police created amemory that will last for a longtime in the minds of the children ofWesbank,” she said.
Approximately 1 300 childrenwere reached through partaking indifferent sporting codes namelysoccer, tennis, netball, physical fit-ness and a show by the K9 Unit
which entailed a demonstration ofa dog sniffing for drugs in differentplaces. Muavha thanked the goodpartnerships the Mfuleni policehave established with the City ofCape Town’s, Sport and Recreationunit, Centre for Justice, WesbankClinic, Schools, Wesbank Sport andRecreation, Community Police Fo-rum and the overall community, which she says has led to the suc-cess of this playdate.
“The community of Wesbankcould not express enough apprecia-tion for the initiative, as this meantfor couple of hours their childrenwere not involved or exposed to theeveryday criminal activities,”Muavha ended off by saying.
Police message: Have some fun!
The children and some adults showed a great interest in the dog sniffingdemonstration by the K9 Unit. Capt Branton Paulsen and his narcotics dog,Jesie B2230, deliver a demonstration.
Sport enthusiasts could participate in the different sporting codes.
The day’s activities were made even more fun with feel good music asSergeant Warren Fradie from Mfuleni police station was the DJ for the day, mixing the tracks.
Children could show their skills inthe obstacle course, created by theMfuleni police for them to participate in.

“Parents must stop being like ‘dinosaurs’and learn how to tweet, Facebook andBBM, if they want to keep a watchful eyeon what their children are up to,” said DrJohn Buswell, CEO of Rape Wise, at a pre-sentation for parents of Kenridge PrimarySchool last week.
Rape Wise is an organisation of legal andhealthcare professionals that have trainedabout 35 000 people in youth issues over thelast eight years.
Buswell, a father of two sons and one of thefounder members, is specifically responsiblefor the development of the school and Paren-Teen foundations, Rapkids and Rapteens.
“Parents today deal with huge issues in kee-ping their children safe at home,” he said.
“You won’t allow your teenage daughteralone with a boyfriend in her bedroom, becau-se you know from experience something canhappen.
“You lay down rules as a result of experien-ce, but when it comes to cyber, you have noexperience to relate to,” he said.
“Parents must get involved with issues re-garding cyberspace. You cannot stop commu-nication in your home. Let your children te-ach you how to BBM and tweet.
“You can only keep an eye on them if youare part of it. You must learn BBM languageto check on them,” he said.
There should be certain rules, like neveragree to meet people you have met online,
Buswell said.“Your children must understand that cyber
space is a public space. Whatever you put onthere, is for everybody to see.
“Never put personal information on the in-ternet. Never give your password or any in-formation that can allowother people access to youaccount,” he warned.
“If your child changesher cellphone screen orturns it off when you arenearby, check it out. If yo-ur child deletes the brows-ing history on the compu-ter, take the computeraway. It means your childhas something to hide,” hesaid.
Buswell said parentsmust have a collectionpoint in their house for allcellphones, laptops andiPads before bedtime.
“All the nonsense takeplace after hours,” he said.
“Don’t give access to cy-berspace too early. Don’t tempt them. Sooneror later their friends will show them thetricks.
“One of the biggest challenges is pornogra-phy,” he said.
Buswell suggested parents must create a“time out” environment in which their childmay tell them anything without being punis-hed.
He said children should not spend morethan three hours a week playing games.
“It has an affect on their learning abilities. We see fatigue at schools and violence is alsodirectly linked to gaming.
“A child that is playing games instead of do-ing his homework, or sulksif his gaming device is ta-ken away, or rushes homeand cannot wait to play ga-mes, is showing signs of ad-diction,” he warned.
“You are not your child’sbest friend or buddy. Yourpurpose is to guide, leadand educate. Your childrenmust abide by your rules.”
“The stuff we dealt withchildren in the past in earlyhigh school, is now dealtwith in primary school al-ready.
Last year there were28 000 victims of rape of 12years and younger in SouthAfrica and that is only thereported cases, he said.
Out of 12 000 girls 51 % were sexually activeby the age of 15 years. Also, 27 000 teenagepregnancies were reported, of which 34 % we-re Grade 8 girls, he said.
“There is also a huge drug problem in theWestern Cape. Drug rape is also big in SouthAfrica.
‘The average victim is 15 years old,”Buswell said.

A life-saving pilot project for mothers andbabies has been launched by Tygerberg Hos-pital in Parow in conjunction with PhilipsHealthcare.
The main objective is to start a clinical tri-al to create a blueprint of emergency man-agement obstetric care units.
This will increase the capacity to managehigh risk pregnancies and complications inthe Obstetric Critical Care Unit (OCCU).
The announcement was made on Thurs-day at the Radison Blu Hotel in Green Point.
“At Tygerberg Hospital doctors often haveto treat very sick and critically ill mothersand every year there is an increase in therate of complicated admissions,” says Dr Ed-uard Langenegger, head of the ObstetricCritical Care Unit at Tygerberg Hospital.
“The resources in the IntensiveCareUnits(ICUs) across the Western Cape are limitedand pregnant patients sometimes have tocompete with surgical, medical and traumacases for admission to an ICU. Although anOCCU was established in 2006 in the hospitalthe demand on the OCCU and general ICUbeds has increased substantially.”
Langenegger says Tygerberg Hospital sawthe potential for more patient admission andtreatment in high care and intensive careunits if there was an opportunity to providethe equipment needed for a step-down unitto assist the mothers.
Patients in need for advanced monitoringcould be admitted to an acute post-natal step-down unit, thereby increasing OCCU andgeneral ICU capacity.
“Once a patient has been admitted to theOCCU or ICU, they are treated and moni-tored closely,” explains Langenegger.
“Only when stable can the patient be dis-charged to another unit for further treat-ment. The obstetric department did not havefunding to purchase monitors for the step-down unit and therefore observations weredone manually,”
He says the Philips Healthcare team as-sessed the impact that a step-down areacouldhaveand theydecided to fundacentralnursing station where vital observationscould take place; providing beds, installingmonitors and training the medical staff.
“With the capability of transferring pa-tients that are stable, but still in need of con-tinuous monitoring to the acute post-natalstep-down unit, we can increase our admis-sion rate for patients that require criticalcare,” says Langenegger.
“This would not have been possible with-out dedicated training, monitors and a cen-tral nursing station, and we hope that thisproject can serve as a template for other hos-pitals in South Africa,” he says.
“Recognising that there is an urgent needto improve healthcare access in the rural ar-eas of South Africa, Philips began exploringpossible opportunities to provide technolo-gy, know-how training and maintenance in-frastructure,” says Jose Fernandes, districtmanager, Philips Healthcare Southern Afri-ca. Fernandes says to improve healthcare inrural areas, they needed to first investigatethe challenges and requirements in urbanhospitals.

– (SarelBurger)

All roads lead to Salberau Parkon Saturday when Central AFCface Trinitarians in a SuperLeague match of the NorthernSuburbs Football Association(kick-off 15:30).
In this game you have two goodteams coming up against each otherand it’s never easy to predict theend results.
“I can tell you, this is going be oneexciting clash,” says Giles Julies, the Central coach. “It’s going to betough for both teams to get the re-sults they are looking for.”
Central are picking up form withevery game they play as they comealight in the Super League.
They have scored 67 goals, whichshows that they are clinical in frontof goal. Another good thing aboutthem is that they have kept cleansheets in most of their games.
Trinitarians, on the other hand, have not been at their best.
There were high expectations be-fore the start of the season and theywere strong favourites, and a losson Saturday would be a major fail-ure for them.
The pressure will certainly be on
them to produce the goods and goon to win their first Super Leaguetrophy.
Personally, I have my moneyfirmly placed on Trinitarians, whoI feel will get the better of Centralon Saturday afternoon.
Central also play a lot on thewings and can be dangerous whencoming from that side but it’s alsogoing to be tough in the middle ofthe park.
Both teams have good players inthe middle who can create opportu-nities upfront.
Trinitarians should watch out forstriker Trevor Meiring, who is thetop scorer for Central, and he is astriker that you can never leavealone in the box.
The Trinitarians defence has notbeen tested and Meiring will surelybe looking to do so in this match.
There is no denying that Trinitar-ians also have a good side withyouth playing a big role in theirpace going forward to give them lotsof options in attacking positions.
In another game Wayside Wan-derers will be desperate for a victo-rywhen theyhostUnited atCraven-by. Wayside lost to Riverside Rang-ers in their last outing and havegone 20 matches without a win.
This is going tobe one excitingclash – coach
