A good way of getting to know your new car is to read the Owners Manual, ideally before your first journey. This will give you the op-portunity to familiarise yourself with new functions, to see how best to handle the car in different situations, and to make the best use of all the cars features. Fuel consumptionVolvo cars have competitive fuel consump-tion in each of their respective classes. Low-er fuel consumption generally results in lower emission of the greenhouse gas, carbon di-oxide.

Volvo Cars and the environment
Efficient emission control Your Volvo is manufactured following the concept Clean inside and out a concept that encompasses a clean interior environ-ment as well as highly efficient emission con-trol. In many cases the exhaust emissions are well below the applicable standards.
In addition there is a special radiPremAir1, which can convert hground-level ozone into pure oxythe ozone passes the radiator. Tozone content in the air the moreconverted.
Clean air in the passenger compartmentA passenger compartment filter dust and pollen from entering thcompartment via the air intake.
A sophisticated air quality systemterior Air Quality System) ensurecoming air is cleaner than the airoutside.
The system consists of an electrand a carbon filter. The incoming
tored continuously and if there is an increase in the level of certain unhealthy gases such as carbon monoxide then the air intake is closed. Such a situation may arise in heavy traffic, queues and tunnels for example.
The entry of nitrous oxides, ground-level ozone and hydrocarbons is prevented by the
consumption, and this way you contribute to a cleaner environment. When Volvos work-shops are entrusted with the repair and maintenance of the car, it becomes part of our system. We make clear demands regard-ing the way in which our workshops are de-signed in order to prevent spills and dis-charges into the environment. Our workshop

Textile standardThe interior of a Volvo is designed to be pleasant and comfortable, even for people with contact allergies and for asthma suffer-ers. All of our upholstery and interior textiles are tested with respect to certain unhealthy substances and allergens as well as emis-sions. This means that all textiles fulfil the re-quirements in the ko-Tex 1003 standard, a major advance towards a healthier passen-ger compartment environment.
ko-Tex certification covers seatbelts, car-pets, thread and fabrics for example. The leather in the upholstery undergoes chromi-um-free tanning with natural plant substanc-es and fulfils the certification requirements.

Reducing environmental impactYou can help reduce environmental impact, for example, by driving economically, by pur-chasing eco-labelled car care products and by servicing and maintaining the car accord-ing to the instructions in the Owners Manual.
The following hints will help you to do your bit for the environment:
Decrease fuel consumption bECO tyre pressure, see page
A roof load and ski box increase wind resist-ance, leading to signifi-cantly higher fuel consumption. Remove them immediately after use.
Remove unnecessary items frthe greater the load the higheconsumption.
Is your car equipped with an eheater? If so, use it for a few hstarting from cold to reduce fusumption and exhaust emissi
Drive gently and avoid braking
Drive in the highest gear possible. Low engine speeds result in lower fuel consumption.
Use engine braking to slow down.

stationary traffic. Always dispose of envi-
ronmentally hazardous waste, such as batteries and oils, in an environ-mentally safe manner. If uncertain about disposal, consult an authorised Volvo workshop for advice.
Service your car regularly. High speed increases consumption con-
siderably due to increased wind resist-ance. A doubling of speed increases wind resistance four times.
These hints will help you to reduce your fuel consumption without increasing your travel time or lessening the enjoyment of driving. Apart from being kind to your car, youll be saving money - and the Earths resources.

The sensors react differently depending on the course of the collision and whether the seatbelts on the driver and passenger side are used. General information on climate control
03
Air conditioning The climate control system cools or heats, and dehumidifies the air entering the passen-ger compartment. The car is equipped with either manual (A/C ) or electronic climate control (ECC).
Misting windows Reduce the problem of windowson the inside by cleaning the winregular window cleaner.
Ice and snowRemove ice and snow from the ctrol air intake (the grille between and the windscreen).
Fault tracing and repairEntrust fault tracing and repair ocontrol system to an authorised shop only.
Refrigerant The air conditioning system contains R134a refrigerant. This refrigerant contains no chlo-rine, which means that it is harmless to the ozone layer. The system must only be charged with R134a refrigerant. Have an au-thorised Volvo workshop carry out this work.
