4 2017 / 2018 South Jersey Visitor Guide 5VisitSouthJersey.com
Welcome to South JerseyHow much do you know about
South Jersey, really?
In a state as packed with people
as it is with things to see, the counties
that stretch from the Philadelphia
suburbs to the shores of the
Delaware Bay radiate natural beauty,
small-town charm, and one-of-a-kind
experiences that mean you don’t
have to seek out a big city to enjoy.
Today, the culture that anchors
some of the oldest settled
communities in America supports
contemporary, five-star dining;
unique shopping districts; and a
bountiful wine region fast earning
a reputation for its remarkable quality
and taste.
The history of New Jersey is infused
in every aspect of the region,
where the get-to-work spirit of the
farmers and thinkers who laid its
foundations is carried forward today.
The hometowns whose shops and
pubs once dotted the crossroads
of the American Revolution and
Underground Railroad still bustle
with inspiration generations later.
Here, local artistry and entertainment
don’t force a compromise between
“family-friendly” and “exciting.” Here,
you can visit a dinosaur dig site or
Native American reservation as easily
as you can take in a live music scene
where “Livin’ on a Prayer” is the local
soundtrack of many a bar’s last call.
Here, the lively attractions that
begin at the celebrated Jersey
Shore continue inland, following the
greenery from which the Garden State
draws its name. Throughout those
cranberry bogs and blueberry fields,
acres of Jersey corn and greenhouses
brimming with heirloom tomatoes,
an efficient network of transit options
provides a quick connection from one
activity to the next, by rail, highway,
or scenic county road.
Wherever those byways take you,
don’t be surprised if the people you
meet aren’t short of opinions on
everything from music to politics to
where the best local slice of pizza
can be found. That energy and
engagement is the lifeblood of the
region. It’s what makes New
Jerseyans some of the most
well-traveled people in the country
as well as its most entertaining hosts.
So what are you waiting for? Come
and discover all the new places to go,
and find yourself here.

Atco Speedway
We Go!Here
Adventure & Family FunWhat’s your idea of a family day well spent? In South Jersey, you can make a dirt-track date with other race fans, toss the kids (and yourself) into the pool at a water park, bargain-hunt at antique shops and farmers markets, or even take a flying leap—from more than 13,000 feet.
Then there’s the revitalized Camden Waterfront, home to the largest aquarium this side of Baltimore, an urban organic Children’s Garden, and the most decorated warship in U.S. naval history.
Feeling the need for speed? Check out the Atco Raceway, where the oldest concrete drag strip in New Jersey thrills race fans with its NHRA-sanctioned straightaway and quarter-mile tracks. Into something more
rugged? The Bridgeport Speedway in
Swedesboro is home to “the Fastest
Dirt Track in the East,” a 5/8-mile,
high-banked, oval encircling a
quarter-mile, inner track. If you want
to flip the keys to the kids for a while,
punch your ticket to Speed Raceway
in Cinnaminson. The indoor electric
go-kart racing facility is the largest
in New Jersey, and promises an
authentic racing experience for drivers
of all ability levels, aged six and older.
Fans of bull riding, steer wrestling, and
barrel racing should visit the Cowtown
Rodeo in Pilesgrove, which is home to
“the oldest weekly rodeo in the United
States” every Saturday from May
through September.
A more traditional theme park
experience awaits at Clementon Park,
a home of South Jersey summers
since the early 1900s. Step back into
those bygone days with the vintage
carousel and Victorian railway or
delightful new rides like the 60-foot
Torpedo Rush dual water slides and
Ring of Fire looping roller-coaster.
When the weather won’t let you enjoy
an outdoor park, Sahara Sam’s Oasis
can step in with its tube slides, indoor
surfing simulator, and “lazy river” tube
float. Parents can take advantage
of the indoor cocktail lounge (open
weekends) while still keeping an eye
on the kids.
Educational day trips start at the
Garden State Discovery Museum in
Cherry Hill, where children 10 and
younger can pretend-play at different
careers in a hands-on environment.
Stargazers will enjoy the Edelman
Planetarium in Glassboro, where
illuminating and informative shows
shed light on Earth’s place in the
cosmos at a bargain price of $5 for
adults and $3 for children, students,
and seniors.
If soaring through the sky is more your
speed than gazing at it, experience the
blood rush of a 13,500-foot tandem
jump through the best view of South
Jersey from Freefall Adventures in
Williamstown.
Back on earth, campgrounds dot the
landscape from Burlington to Salem
Counties, and wildlife preserves in
Rancocas, Medford, or Palmyra are a
day-trippers’ paradise.
There’s plenty more to see, tucked
away in South Jersey’s historic
communities and local shopping
districts, close to public transit or
its interconnected highway system.
Start planning your unforgettable
experience today!

The Great OutdoorsAlthough it’s covered by miles of highways and public railways, the Garden State is also home to thousands of acres of preserved greenspace.
Feeling the call of the wild? Get yourself back to nature at the 50-mile Batona hiking trail, established in the 1960s by Philadelphia-area conservationists to link two of the biggest preserved wild spaces in the state—the Bass River and Wharton State Forests.
At Bass River, you can take a dip along the Eastern shore of Lake Absegami, or break out the boat and experience the tranquility of one of New Jersey’s lovely woodland refuges from the water’s surface.
The largest single parcel of the New
Jersey State Park System, Wharton
State Forest, is home to 122,000 acres
of wild space with miles of trails for
hiking and biking, waterways for
canoing, and some of the best wildlife
observation available in the state.
Nestled deep in the woods of Medford,
the non-profit Cedar Run Wildlife
Refuge educates visitors about
South Jersey’s native creatures while
providing around-the-clock rescue
veterinary services for injured wild
animals. Enclosed rehabilitation pens
offer an up-close look at dozens of the
furry and feathered locals.
The 250-acre Palmyra Cove Nature Park
encompasses wetlands, woodlands,
meadows, and a freshwater Tidal Cove,
right at the foot of the Tacony-Palmyra
Bridge. Not far down the road, about
15 miles away, the 210-acre Rancocas
Nature Center treats visitors to a
The New Jersey Pinelands is a million-acre biosphere that touches seven counties, 56 communities, and more than 700,000 people. One of the first preserved wild spaces in the country, it houses agriculture and “piney” culture, wine trail weekends, and starry night skies. It’s the place to find blueberry bushes and cranberry bogs as murky as the origins of the Jersey Devil, where a canoe and a backpack are your ticket to the living history and untamed, natural beauty of the Garden State in its purest form.
The Pinelands
three-mile hiking trail through
meadow, forest, and wetland habitats.
South Jersey boasts hundreds of
acres of preserved green spaces for
wildlife interaction, observation and
photography–especially in Salem
County where you’ll discover the
104-acre Fort Mott State Park, a former
military outpost along the historic
New Jersey Coastal Heritage Trail that
combines local history and natural
beauty. Salem County is also home
to Mad Horse Creek and Maskells Mill
Pond Fish and Wildlife Management
Areas, where visitors can view
migratory birds via boat and canoe.
Looking for the ultimate outdoor
experience? Pinelands Adventures
awaits you with a wildlife immersion
with hands-on exploration, wildlife
education, hiking and water excursions
to take you away from it all. The offer
in-depth and captivating tours
throughout the year that take visitors through some of the most beautiful areas of the Pinelands. There are activities for everyone including nature and ecology, history and culture, guided hiking, and guided paddle boating.

Arts For AllFounded in 1956 and just a few blocks from downtown Haddonfield, the Markeim Arts Center is one South Jersey’s best kept secrets. The offer programs for the entire family and a year long schedule of art exhibitions, musical performances, studio classes and art camps.
Arts & EntertainmentCulturally, South Jersey has been bookended by Rocky Balboa and Bruce Springsteen: blue-collar long- shots whose successes were built on passion and a relentless work ethic—beloved by their neighbors because they were never out of touch with their neighborhoods.
The undercurrent of such people-packed places produced an artistic response that is similarly varied and complex, but always driving, motivated by that hustle. This mindset provides the foundation upon which vintage theaters were built, some of which have seen the biggest names in the business for nearly 100 years, and staples like the Markeim Arts Center, a cornerstone to the fine arts community in South Jersey for 60 years, continue to thrive.
The back beat of South Jersey drove the establishment of Symphony in C, a nationally recognized training orchestra that has made its mission to develop the careers of young professional musicians. The organization has sent forth alumni from its headquarters to orchestras as far-flung as the New York Philharmonic, the Seattle Symphony, and the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic.
Those performing artists who have put down roots in South Jersey are well supported too, by a number of local theater companies across the region. Setting up shop in long standing venues like the Ritz in Oaklyn, the Broadway Theater of Pitman, or the Grand Theater in Williamstown, local players routinely deliver high-caliber performances throughout their seasons.
And how could they fail to do so in such dramatic settings as the Scottish Rite
Theater and Ballroom in Collingswood? The 1,050-seat, art-deco auditorium was originally constructed for Masonic rituals, and is furnished with imported Florentine stained glass windows and original mohair seats. Concerts that once featured its three-story pipe organ now are accented by a state-of-the-art sound and lighting system, and have included such notable acts as Steve Hackett of Genesis, Gordon Lightfoot, and Pat Benatar.
For all our movie buffs, take your pick from over 100 movie theaters across South Jersey with everything from iMax and 3D features to cozy, armchair- style reclining seats. Although there may be too many movies to see, there’s certainly no lack of places to see them. Grab your popcorn and take it all in!
Fine arts in South Jersey are also underpinned by a cottage-industry culture of skilled crafters, jewelry
makers, photographers, painters, and glass workers. These home-based entrepreneurs unite for special neighborhood events, like the Art Within Reach seasonal show and reception and 4Towns4Art home studio tours. They are also setting up in permanent spaces, like the SoHa Arts Building in Haddon Township and The Factory in Collingswood, where they collaborate and educate, inspiring the next wave of young artists who will someday take their places.

Downtowns & ShoppingIn South Jersey, shopping is an all-day experience on the sunny sidewalks of beautiful downtowns. Their big, glassy storefronts house a unique inventory of items that have been hand-selected by the hardest-working small business owners in the Delaware Valley. These historic communities have only become more inviting through the years, complementing the storefronts with al fresco dining along tree-lined streets.
Collingswood accents its popular, dining-focused “Restaurant Row” with vintage retail, sustainable parenting goods, and art-and-gift galleries.
Downtown Bordentown offers a unique slice of historic South Jersey, featuring
art galleries, bookshops, antique stores, and a vintage record shop.
For the visitor who enjoys American history, antiques, folklore, and charm, take a trip to Burlington City for one of the best shopping districts in Burlington County.
Monthly First Fridays in Haddonfield, from April through November, feature street performances and art displays in this small town which combines colonial-era charm with contemporary boutique shopping.
Medford Village sets its downtown shopping experience, which includes antique and jewelry stores, and gardening supplies, amid historic streetscapes.
Situated among 113 acres of parks, historic buildings, shops, and eateries, Woodbury is home to several fine artists and performance groups.
FARMERS MARKETS
At the Columbus Farmers Market, shopping “the oldest and largest flea market in the Delaware Valley” means having your pick of thousands of items, including antiques, gardening gear, fresh produce, and Amish baked goods.
The “Often Imitated, Never Equaled” Cowtown Farmers Market in Pilesgrove has stood for 91 years in Salem County. More than 400 merchants buy and sell livestock, antiques, produce, and collectibles every Tuesday and Saturday from 8 AM to 4 PM.
Family-owned-and-operated Duffield’s Farm Market has been a mainstay of Gloucester County for more than 80 years, providing fresh produce, seasonal hayrides and pick-your-own crops. Likewise, the Stoltzfus Family of Lancaster County, PA, has brought the farm-fresh taste of Lancaster County Pennsylvania Dutch foods
to Williamstown, New Jersey, for generations. From Thursday through Saturday, enjoy baked pies, sausage, oven-roasted turkey, and hand-rolled soft pretzels. The Village Shoppes next door have hot and bulk foods, produce, and a full-service restaurant. Jersey Fresh is an advertising,
promotional and quality grading program launched in 1984 to help farmers inform consumers about the availability and variety of fruits and vegetables grown in New Jersey. Through the many years of the program, consumers’ awareness has increased, and it has become the benchmark for other states to initiate their own agricultural marketing programs.

South Jersey’s Wine Region
In New Jersey, winemaking is a family tradition that has grown by leaps and bounds in less than a decade, and is poised to achieve even greater heights in the next. Having evolved from a handful of operations into an officially designated American Viticultural Area (AVA) with more than 40 wineries and vineyards, the wine industry in South Jersey now accounts for a significant portion of the close to $40 million dollars each year that the industry generates statewide.
Exclusively from New Jersey is the Coeur d’Est, a highly rated red wine blend made exclusively from grapes grown in the Outer Coastal Plain AVA. Coeur d’Est is a combination
of five varietals; Cabernet Franc, Chambourcin, Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Merlot. Participating wineries create their own unique blend of Coeur d’Est with set standards that blend the varietals in a way that best reflects their characteristics and compliment the combination of flavors.
For visitors who want help planning their routes through the region, the Two Bridges Wine Trail, Wine & Ale Trail of South Jersey, and Cape May Wine Trail offer guidance that includes maps to local landmarks, downtown shopping, dining, and more.
It all means that wine lovers don’t have to sock away their pennies for a Napa vacation to enjoy an authentic adventure: trail tours, tastings and festivals in South Jersey will fill up your weekends without draining your bank account. Whether you’re up for a deep dive into the lush vineyards of the Outer Coastal Plain AVA, or just want
to dip your proverbial toes into the grape-stomping vats, mouth-watering memories are just moments away.
WHAT IS AN AVA?
The engine behind the recent boom in South Jersey winemaking has been the formal designation of its nine-county vineyard area as an American Viticultural Area, acreage designated for the cultivation of wine grapes that isn’t confined to state or national boundaries. It’s a way to certify that the wine you’re drinking is produced from locally grown grapes, as opposed to locally headquartered businesses. South Jersey is located within the Outer Coastal Plain AVA.
WHAT IS THE OUTER COASTAL PLAIN?
The Outer Coastal Plain American Viticultural Area is a 2.25-million-
acre wine-grape-growing region that extends throughout nine counties in New Jersey. The region has climatic and soil conditions which are amongst the best in the East Coast for producing high quality wine thanks, in part, to the climate effects of the Atlantic Ocean and Delaware Bay fostering 190 to 217 freeze free days per year. You can explore the richness of the Outer Coastal Plain AVA through its regional network of wine trails.
SOUTH JERSEY’S WINE TRAILS
Within the Outer Coastal Plain AVA, the wine trails of South Jersey cut across a broad region of real estate, but are not difficult to travel. Three major routes—the Two Bridges Wine Trail, Wine & Ale Trail of South Jersey, and Cape May Wine Trail—open up the diverse landscape of the state to visitors. Enjoy the scenery of South Jersey’s coastal

Along the trail is Bellview Winery, Berlin Brewing Co., Coda Rossa Winery, DiMatteo Vineyards, Plagido’s Winery, Sharrott Winery, Three 3’s Brewing Company, Tomasello Winery, Tomfoolery Brewing Company and White Horse Winery.
CAPE MAY WINE TRAIL
The 19-mile Cape May Wine Trail cuts through some of the most scenic shoreline in South Jersey, from the beaches of the Atla ntic Ocean to the freshwater Delaware Bay. Here, the vineyards are more than a place to enjoy fresh, locally produced wines—they’re also a gorgeous natural backdrop for eco-tourism and sightseeing along the historic Jersey shore. Natali Vineyards, Jessie Creek Winery, Hawk Haven Vineyard, Cape May Winery, Turdo Vineyards, and Willow Creek Winery are included on the trip.
OUR VINEYARD TOURISM NEIGHBORS
Because the Outer Coastal Plain AVA
extends beyond the four-county region
covered by this guide, we encourage
you to visit these partner websites for
information on dining, accommodations,
wine trails and other attractions beyond
those borders. We’ll show you the
wineries – they’ll show you the rest!
and watershed areas, its wild forests, and the lands carved by the Delaware River as you cross from vineyard to vineyard, sampling the local color and culture of the area.
The trails range in length from 19 to 66 miles, and are designed to be enjoyed at whatever pace you prefer. Accommodations are also available along the designated routes for those who choose to extend their tour beyond a single weekend.
However you decide to approach the wine trails, leave yourself enough time to stay and chat with the locals and your fellow guests—because you’re guaranteed to make new friends along the way.
TWO BRIDGES WINE TRAIL
Taking its name from the Delaware Memorial and Commodore Barry
Bridges, which traverse the nearby
Delaware River, the Two Bridges Wine
Trail takes visitors on a tour of nine
wineries across two counties. Dining,
shopping, and other local attractions
punctuate the 53-mile-long trail
including Auburn Road, Bellview,
Cedarvale, Chestnut Run Farm,
Coda Rossa, Heritage Vineyards,
Monroeville, Summit City Winery,
and Wagonhouse Winery.
WINE & ALE TRAIL OF SOUTH JERSEY
The wineries and breweries along the
Wine and Ale Trail of South Jersey
traverse a handful of towns nestled
within the preserved wild places of
the New Jersey Pinelands. Visitors can
reach all of them within a two-hour
maximum drive, but are encouraged to
split the tour among two days for the
fullest enjoyment of each.

DiningDining in the Garden State has
benefited tremendously from the
farm-to-fork movement, but perhaps
nowhere more than in South Jersey,
where the close proximity to fresh
ingredients has given local chefs an
expanded palette of locally sourced
foods with which to demonstrate their
mastery of a range of flavors.
In addition to showcasing the
freshness of traditional staple
ingredients like corn, tomatoes,
and berries, South Jersey’s farmers
markets have given diners a taste
for fresh ingredients, to which chefs
have responded. Menus have become
more sophisticated overall, with
kitchens catering to individual dietary
needs. Professional groups like SJ Hot
Chefs have also banded together to
promote local dining via seasonal
prix fixe restaurant weeks.
There is excellence to promote, too.
South Jersey has seen an expansion
of restaurants looking for additional
locations, like Distrito, which brought
Jose Garces to Moorestown. Up the
road in Collingswood are two 2017
James Beard semifinalists: Vetri’s
disciple Joey Baldino, nominated for
Best Chef in the Mid-Atlantic region
for his tenure at the rustic Italian,
charm-filled Zeppoli, and nearby
Sagami, a longtime favorite sushi
restaurant in the region, nominated
as Outstanding Restaurant.
Cultural authenticity is present in each
of their menus, which reflect the variety
of casual and fine dining options in
the area—Mexican, Italian, Japanese,
Indian, South American, Greek, and
more. Yet there is as much competition
to be known for the best hoagie,
cheesesteak, and tomato pie in the
region, and locals have enough options
to make it an argument.
Added to this, the area has been
gripped by an upscale hamburger
craze that’s brought in franchises like
Smashburger, Zinburger, and Red
Robin to compete with the patties
served by local gastropubs and
longstanding landmarks like Weber’s
roadside drive-in. And if you’re staying
in the area but don’t feel like dining
out, many of South Jersey’s locally
owned restaurants offer take-out or
participate in online delivery services.
Many of New Jersey’s best meals are
served in intimate, neighborhood
BYOB’s, where diners pair dishes with
their favorite beverages. New laws
allowing restaurants to partner with
South Jersey wineries have expanded
choices as well, bringing locally-
sourced wines to their tables.
For over 25 years, On The Town Food Tours has been exploring the best local flavor trends and one of a kind dining experiences in South Jersey, and now they want to share their experiences with you! Their one of a kind dining tours run a few times a month and take you for a stroll through the beautiful downtowns of Haddonfield, Collingswood, Mount Holly or Bordentown as you sample sweet and savory food items from multiple restaurants and bakeries. Breweries & DistilleriesSouth Jersey has also benefited from the nationwide boom in craft brewing, with standbys like Yuengling, the oldest brewery in America, expanding their profiles at tap houses to compete with regional products. More than ever, the area beer experience is as much a local as a cosmopolitan one, with signature products on display sometimes mere miles from their bottling source
Craft-batch brewery startups are also growing rapidly in South Jersey, with a handful of local beer-makers joining in the revolution at their own facilities throughout the area. Visiting these spaces has become a must for beer lovers who want to experience the process first-hand. Self-guided tours culminate in tasting rooms where guests can chat up brewmasters and sample the varieties of brews.
The best-established of these is Flying
Fish of Somerdale, which has been
growing its presence in the region for
over a decade. With a dozen different
brews, many of them ales and other
hop-forward flavors, Flying Fish has
made a name for itself with its Exit
Series, Red Fish, and seasonal beers. Its
new facility incorporates sustainable
environmental technology, including
solar panels, a rain garden, and an
aggressive recycling program.
The space formerly occupied by Flying
Fish in Cherry Hill has become home
to Forgotten Boardwalk Brewing, and
the tenant has rapidly made a name for
itself. Taking its inspiration from vintage
Jersey Shore boardwalk and sideshow
culture, the Forgotten Boardwalk
tasting room features a carnival
atmosphere, with skee ball machines,
funhouse mirrors, and a barside wheel
of beers for those who can’t decide
what to try.
In Mount Holly, nano-brewers Village Idiot have beaten the drum for the downtown revitalization that craft beer can bring to small municipal dining and shopping districts. Taking root in the old Bridgetown Pub on High Street, the brewers have turned the sleepy former taphouse into a bustling enterprise with nine different beers in rotation.
The small-batch Lunacy Brewing Company of Magnolia is getting off the ground with its venture, opening to the public for tastings and tours on Fridays and Saturdays only. Stop by to check out the flagship IPA, Belgian Blonde Ale, or Rocket Chocolate Peanut Butter Stout.
South Jersey is also home to two Iron Hill brewpub locations (Maple Shade and Voorhees), where guests can see the beverages for their next visit being made while they dine on first-rate pub far.
Jersey wine culture is merely the tip of the iceberg when it comes to handmade, local beverages. Small-batch breweries now dot the landscape from Mount Holly to Magnolia, with established brands joined by newcomers to the trade. The latest craft entrepreneurs to the scene are distillers. Trading on centuries-old traditions, Cooper River Distillers are the first spirit-makers to operate in Camden City since the Prohibition Era. Their inventory of products includes the Petty’s Island family of rums and Silver Fox rye. Lazy Eye Distillery in Richland, also the first business of its kind in Atlantic County since Prohibition, has launched a flagship vodka.

Golf & Country ClubsAthletes looking for a cultivated take on the great, green outdoors can visit one of the many top-notch golf courses in the area, including the award-winning RiverWinds Golf and Tennis Club, Scotland Run Golf Club, Valleybrook Country Club, or the Camden County Golf Academy, a public driving range conveniently located on U.S. Route 130 in Pennsauken.
Located along the scenic banks of the Cooper River, the Camden County Golf Academy offers a double-decker driving range, short-game area, and club rentals for just $1. You can swing away from 10 AM to sunset daily and buckets of balls are priced from $6.
Founded by former Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Ron Jaworski, the 18-hole,
par-72, RiverWinds championship golf
course provides breathtaking views of
the Delaware River from West Deptford.
Five sets of tees offer a way for golfers
of varying skill levels to enjoy the
sprawling terrain at the water’s edge.
In nearby Williamstown, the Scotland
Run Golf Club is considered one of
the top golf courses in the area by Golf
World, Golf Digest, and Business Week
magazines. Scotland Run Golf Club
features “a distinctive blend of wooded,
quarry, and links-style holes,” and is
open to the public all year round.
Valleybrook Country Club has been
voted the Best Public Course in South
Jersey by readers of the Courier-Post
and it is easy to see why. The course is
a classic design that includes a mixture
of flat and hilly terrain as well as lush
green teeing areas and tight fairways.
For golfers who prefer an indoor
experience, the Golf Performance
Institute in Mount Laurel gives visitors
the ability to play golf all year long at its
10,000-square-foot facility. Can’t make
it to any of the big-name courses on
your bucket list? The Golf Performance
Institute offers a simulated experience
of 30 world-renowned courses on
its Foresight GC2 Golf Simulators.
Then there’s the indoor driving range,
highlighted by an 1,100-square-foot
putting green and short-game area,
and technological innovations to help
improve your game. Instructors also
provide technical feedback that can
help sharpen your focus and skill set.
Looking for a way to share the golf
experience with your junior caddies?
Take them out to the mini-golf courses
at Pleasant Valley in Voorhees or the
Mount Laurel Funplex. The former is a
family-owned attraction that has been
thrilling young children since 1972
and offers group rates and coupons;
the latter provides a pair of courses
surrounded by shaded landscaping
and moving waterways.
In addition to our first-class golf courses, South Jersey offers a variety casual options for kids and the kids at heart. The Funplex in Mt. Laurel unveiled two new, magical Mini Golf courses: the skill-friendly Adventure Cave and the challenging Lost Lagoon. Golf Land in Voorhees has fun for all skills and ages. Pitch ’n Putt is the perfect 18-hole, bent grass course for beginners and juniors and its Mini-Golf is ideal for couples and families to share an afternoon or evening in the cool shade of its treescape.

History & MuseumsSouth Jersey has a rich historic past that only begins to unfurl with the events of colonial-era America. Discover places where escaped slaves traveled along the Underground Railroad. Explore the first dinosaur dig site in the state, or stroll through a pre-industrial community nestled within a preserved forest. Special seasonal celebrations add to the sense of place and spirit that persists here.
Deep in Hammonton, the blueberry capital of New Jersey, is nestled Batsto Village, whose wooded glades have entertained generations of visitors seeking relaxation in its springs. Established in the 1700s, the ironworks at Batsto eventually grew into Batsto Glass Works, cranberry bog, and lumber mill, and much of the surviving infrastructure of that time is still
available to visit today. The historic village offers self-guided tours, monthly hikes, and an annual Halloween celebration.
Revolutionary War-era buffs seeking a peaceful walk back through the years should visit the Red Bank Battlefield in National Park, New Jersey. Once home to Fort Mercer, a strategic military base erected on the estate of James and Ann Whitall, the land saw brief but furious fighting during the Revolutionary War. The Whitalls were a prosperous Quaker family whose property reverted to farmland afterwards, but their home and the acreage around it has been preserved as a public park and historical monument, open year-round from dawn to dusk.
Only somewhat farther down the road in historic Swedesboro, guests can navigate a self-guided walking tour that spans the Victorian downtown shopping district and eight registered
historic places. The Cemetery Walking Tour includes a glimpse into the lives of many prominent New Jerseyans, including military veterans, local leaders, and other noteworthy individuals.
One of the most significant figures in South Jersey history lived in the oldest known house in Lawnside, New Jersey. Peter Mott, “a free black man and an agent of the Underground Railroad,” lent the use of his two-story property to the aid of that cause. The caretakers of his property open it to the public for tours every Saturday.
For a taste of living military history in South Jersey, look no further than the venerable Battleship New Jersey, the most decorated naval vessel in American military history. Now converted into a floating museum, it offers guided tours, veteran interactions, and a 4D flight simulator, all on the Delaware River in Camden City.
Haddonfield has bragging rights for unearthing the first full skeleton of the hadrosaurus, the giant lizard that takes its name from this quaint New Jersey town. The 1858 discovery is alive and well thanks to the “Haddie” monument erected by local sculptor John Giannotti.
Fresh off the dino-newswire is the Jean and Ric Edelman Fossil Park at Rowan University in Mantua Township. Jean and Ric Edelman, made history on October 17, 2016, when they announced a $25 million gift to transform the Rowan University Fossil Park into a world-class destination for scientific discovery and “citizen science.” Plans include a museum, visitor center, laboratory spaces, nature trail, and paleontology-themed playground.

Hotels & EscapesAlong the Northeast Corridor that runs from New York City to Washington, D.C., South Jersey is known for its convenience to other major metropolitan areas, offering day trips and re-fueling stops for travelers headed in either direction. But whether you’re staying locally or just looking to get out of the house for a weekend, the region has some unique lodgings that will offer more charm, culture, and heritage than your average hotel stay does, while sacrificing none of its modern comforts.
Many bed-and-breakfasts offer the personal touch of a home-cooked meal, but how many fill out that experience with farm-fresh eggs, gathered on-site? The Candle House Inn in Mullica Hill has that and other noteworthy amenities,
including private, tiled bathrooms, complimentary Wi-Fi, and an in-ground pool. “Close to everything, but tucked away from it all” is the motto here, and it certainly lives up to those words.
In historic Pitman, The Inn on Holly is a Victorian home that revives the antique culture of the early 1900s, with claw-foot tubs, a wrap-around front porch, and first-floor sitting rooms. Breakfasts are provided daily, with locally grown produce, and a gourmet version on weekends. Each room offers modern conveniences as well: Sterns and Fosters beds, high-definition cable television, and Wi-Fi service.
Located two blocks from the Burlington train station and a short stroll from the banks of the Delaware River, The Lily Inn is a step back in time that’s a quick ride from Trenton or Camden along the River Line. Its original white cedar floors are offset by 10-foot ceilings, a blue marble fireplaces, and a collection
of antiques that echo the shops in the historic neighborhoods nearby. The facility even allows small dogs to join their owners in the suite for an additional $25 per night.
Bird-watchers and nature lovers will enjoy a stay at Barrett’s Plantation House in Mannington Township, where the gardens are home to several species of birds and even more seasonal flowers. Parts of this estate date back to 1735, and the restored portions still recall its colonial roots—pumpkin pine floors, period antiques, custom draperies, and reproduction furniture. Breakfast is provided every morning, and the evening includes a complimentary cocktail hour with snacks.
Still not ready to give up the comforts of modern design? At Aloft Mount Laurel, the pulse of the city beats in suburban South Jersey. With a contemporary bar, lounge, and 24/7
pantry, Aloft isn’t the kind of place to hole up in your room—although with 42-inch LCD televisions, plug-n-play electronics charging stations, and complimentary Internet access in every suite, you certainly could.
PERFECT PLACESBeyond accommodations, South Jersey features breathtaking facilities for your next event.

EventsAlthough South Jersey is convenient
to major metropolitan areas like
Philadelphia, its smaller, home-town
communities can fill out a calendar of
events to rival that of their neighbors
on the other side of the Delaware River.
Take, for example, the Collingswood
May Fair (May), which has grown from a
“clothesline art exhibit” into a mile
long street fair drawing an estimated
50,000 guests annually. Amusements,
street vendors, and live entertainment
dot the downtown landscape on a day
that also features an antique and
classic auto show. For almost 40
years, May Fair has kicked off summer
in South Jersey, with a Memorial
Day weekend celebration that gives
residents an alternative to the holiday
beach traffic.
We of course cannot forget the mega-
celebration of all things blueberry–the
Whitesbog Blueberry Festival (June),
considered to be one of the finest
“old-fashioned” festivals in the tri-state
region featuring traditional Pinelands
musicians, arts and crafts, fantastic
festival food, wagon and walking tours,
living history actors, demonstrations
and dozens of children’s activities.
As the season rolls on, beer enthusiasts
will be marking their calendars for the
Garden State Craft Brewers Guild Beer
Festival (June), when they’ll sample the
fare of more than 21 New Jersey-based
breweries on the decks of the famous
Battleship New Jersey.
Once the summer is in full swing, the
Camden Waterfront is the place to be
for the Fourth of July weekend. The
Freedom Festival Celebration is a week-
long series of events that starts around
the end of June. From the
Battleship New Jersey to the Adventure Aquarium and Wiggins Waterfront Park, Camden will welcome guests with special entertainment related to America’s birthday.
Don’t miss The Haddonfield Crafts and Fine Art Festival (July)—voted as one of the 200 Best Shows by Sunshine Artist.™ More than 100,000 attendees come for the fine artists and crafters that will line Haddonfield’s historic streets for this not-to-miss weekend. Just a few weeks later, the farming traditions of Gloucester County will be on display at the county-wide 4H Fair & Peach Festival (July) in Mullica Hill, New Jersey.
Collingswood also hosts one of the most celebrated holiday parades in the region (November), complete with mummers, musicians, jugglers, and historic automobiles. Other towns, like downtown Haddonfield ring in the New Year in an alcohol-free setting
are invited to enjoy the family-friendly environment at Haddonfield’s First Night celebration, which starts early in the evening on December 31, and features several activities just for children to enjoy.
