Shops are a typical example ofan open space, customers mustfeel safe during an emergency ora short mains failure. If there isthe need to evacuate the building, everyone must be guided alongthe shortest route to the nearestexit, without any risk.
In the open space area of theshop you would use the bulkheadversion of Voyager Exel forproviding anti-panic lighting. If the shop is fitted with asuspended ceiling you would use the recessed version – now Voyager Exel looks sleekand is integrated into the ceiling.
For guiding customers along anescape route you simply need toadd the double sided exit signattachment instead of the diffuser.Alternatively you could fix one ofthe legends onto the diffuser andmount Voyager Exel onto the wallor above the door for escaperoute signage.
The emergency lighting in open spaces has to providesufficient light to avoid panic(0.5 lux minimum according to European standards)

In times of emergency it isessential for people to be able tosee the way out and locate firefighting and safety equipment.
Take for example a corridor ofan office building. There areintersections, changes in levelsand directions, plus exit doorsintended to be used in anemergency. All these require anemergency luminaire within 2m.Add to this the first aid posts, fire fighting equipment, firealarm call points and lastly thearea outside the final exit door.
All of these areas and manymore have to be regarded whenplanning the emergency lighting.
For the escape route lighting youwould use the bulkhead versionof the Voyager Exel. The recessedversion allows you to integrateVoyager Exel into a suspendedor plasterboard ceiling.
For signage you simply add thedouble sided exit sign attachmentinstead of the diffuser or fix oneof the legend labels onto thediffuser and mount Voyager Exelonto the wall e.g. above the door.
Emergency lighting has to providesufficient light to guide people tosafety (1 lux minimum along theescape route centre line accordingto European standards)

Voyager Exel has superb opticalperformance that has beenoptimised to give excellentspacing in the emergency mode. This means that for a typicalcorridor (2m wide) luminaires arespaced at 7.2m (for a mountingheight of 3m).
Typically fewer luminaires maybe used to produce the sameperformance. For instance a 19m corridor requires only 3 bulkheads, rather than 4 conventional units, thus saving25% on materials and labour.
Voyager Exel is as modular asbuilding blocks, just pick whatyou need for your applicationand put it together:
• The basis of the Voyager Exelproduct range is the bulkheadwith the high performing opticaldiffuser. You can mount it ontosurfaces like ceilings and walls.
• Instead of the diffuser you canattach the double sided exitsign to the bulkhead body tocreate a ceiling mountedescape route sign.
• If the building is fitted withsuspended ceilings, you can usethe recessed versions of eitherthe bulkhead or the exit sign tointegrate Voyager Exel into, aslender and unobtrusive solution!
• For both the diffuser and forthe double sided exit signattachment, self-adhesivelegends are used, helping you to adapt Voyager Exel toprovide escape route signage.

Just like fire protection systems, emergency lighting is potentiallylife saving but worthless andhazardous if the equipment is not properly maintained. As a consequence there areincreasingly stringent legalrequirements to regularly inspect, test and maintain emergencylighting in workplaces or publicbuildings. Explorer, the ThornLighting Emergency Test productrange, provides automated testingof emergency luminaires that isfully compliant with EuropeanStandards. This offers completepeace of mind and safety without the need for costly andtime-consuming manual testing bya competent person, which isrequired for the basic emergencyrange version of Voyager Exel.Explorer has been designed with three options to suit varyingrequirements and budgets.
Explorer SelfTestSelfTest has an integral diagnosticmicroprocessor contained withinan emergency luminaire, e.g. theVoyager Exel. A bi-colour LEDintegrated in the luminaireindicates status as it monitors andautomatically tests its emergencyfunctions at intervals compliantwith legislation. Easy to installand requiring no additionalcabling, Explorer SelfTest providessimple and reliable standaloneautomatic testing, eliminating theneed for costly manual testing bya competent person.
Explorer ProjectAn addressable testing system, providing fully automaticmonitoring, testing and faultlogging for emergency luminarieslike the Voyager Exel, using theExplorer Project XP128 Controller.Explorer Project’s addressablefault reporting capabilitieseliminate the need for visualinspection. This offers a highlyconvenient and fullyprogrammable solution that isideal for small and medium sizedprojects of up to 128 luminaires(or when using the ExplorerProject XPX64 Extenders, up to256 luminaires) can be controlled. The system works by periodicallyand automatically testing theemergency luminaires for workingefficiency. The tests are centrallyrecorded and any faults arelogged. These can then be printed(using the handheld ExplorerProject XPPRI Printer) or, if theoptional Explorer Project XPGSMmodule is installed, faults canalso be reported via an SMS textmessage to a mobile phone.Fault reports identify the luminaireconcerned and the type of fault(lamp, battery or emergencyinterface), allowing swift locationand repair.
Explorer SystemA programmable addressabletesting system for emergencylighting, which allows tests to berun automatically, or manuallyusing a central PC with amonitoring software. Faults arelogged and recorded and faultreports can then be printed, emailed or faxed. An idealsolution for larger projects (up to4,500 addresses), eliminating theneed for visual inspection andmaintenance walks.
SelfTest and Addressable test versions of VoyagerExel eliminate the need for expensive and timeconsuming manual testing
