Wangaratta Primary School Newsletter Issue 21
July 21 2016
Mystery Hands I found a hand stuck to our front door. Several similar ones appeared around the school around the same time. Written on the palm of this one was ‘Free High Fives. Take One. Go Be Awesome’. This type of positivity is contagious and is part of what I love about our school. A smile, a greeting, words of encouragement, questions of interest – and a positive paper hand – are all part of the culture we try to develop at Chisholm Street. It inspired me to pass on some high fives of my own. High Five to the Student
Representative Council The SRC, with members from year 2 to 6, has been working away on a range of projects, including our recent Pyjama day and reviewing potential technology upgrades for our school. I met with them this week to set them the important task of gathering feedback from their classes as part of our regular school review. They are an impressive group of young leaders and I thank them for their help.
High Five to our Melbourne Trip Organisers and Helpers A big thanks to Jessie Hann and the junior teaching team for organising our big bus trip to the Melbourne Museum on Friday. An especially big high five to our parent volunteers (including the generous people who offered but
who we couldn’t fit on the trip). These types of events cannot go ahead without your help. If you missed out this time, hopefully you will get a chance to join us on a special event later on. An Athletic Five High Five to Kylie Robertson, our (apparently) tireless PE teacher who is organising a huge range of events to keep our children active this term. High five too, to the students who jump into these activities with energy and enthusiasm. With Jump Rope for Heart next week, Bike Education, Bike Hikes, AFL clinic, Athletics Day (attempt two), and more there are lots of activities for everyone.

A Creative High Five Budding artists from across the school have been doing some amazing work lately, led by Emma Sipola, Judy Lowen and Cazz Hicks, and ably supported by the rest of the teaching team. From the Red Riding Hood display currently installed in our foyer, to back drops and props for our cultural performance, to the musical items themselves, Chisholm Street kids really are creative kids. More works starting soon We will have workers on our roofs next week (if the weather is kind), installing ladder points and gutter guards. While the key aim of this work is to reduce maintenance and improve safety for anyone who has to climb on our rooves it should have another bonus effect for students. Gutter guards should mean fewer balls being trapped out of reach for weeks on end – so fewer interruptions to downball games. Parent Opinion Survey time Our annual parent opinion survey is on again. The Department of Education generates a sample of 40 families for the survey to be posted home to. If you are one of the families selected we thank you for the time you spend giving us feedback – it is really valuable feedback to us for tracking our progress and planning for the future. Please return the surveys in the envelope provided to the school by next Friday (29 July). This is a quick turnaround so hopefully you can make the time to complete it almost as soon as you receive it. All responses are then forwarded directly to the Department for processing. Responses are anonymous and only the collated responses are returned to the school. Thanks in advance to the lucky 40 families selected. Enrolment Reminder We already have one full class of prep for next year and will soon need to make a decision about a second class. Please encourage anyone you know considering our school for their child in 2017 to contact us to arrange a tour and discuss enrolment. Our planning for next year is well underway and our prep transition program begins this term too so the early the enrolments come in the better. Have a great week, Steve

Grades 3/4/5/6 will commence Bike Ed on August 22. We will do Bike Ed twice a week for three weeks. We will be doing our lessons on Thursdays from 9-10 (3/4) and 10-11 (5/6). A note asking for parent helpers will be sent home soon. The week before Bike Ed commences we will be asking students to bring along their bikes to ensure they are mechanically sound. Could you please start organising your child’s bike and helmet to ensure they are the right size and any necessary repairs have been made. A bike repair checklist will be sent home in a couple of weeks.
Our Bike Hike will be on Tuesday September 6. Please put this date in your diary. We will need parents to drive support vehi-cles and to ride with groups. Thank you, Emma, Matt, Louise, Andrea and Merrilyn

Term 3 will see WPS participating in Jump Rope for Heart. All students are asked to raise money for research into Heart, Stroke and Cardiovas-cular Disease. Students can ask families and friends to sponsor them for the 2016 Jump Off Day. Sponsorship forms are being sent home so stu-dents can commence fundraising. IMPORTANT note: We recommend that students do not go door to door and do not ask strangers for dona-tions.
Jump Off Day is planned for THURSDAY 28 JULY. On this day students will participate in some skipping activities to show-case their hard work in skipping at school. It has been marvellous to see some amazing skipping tricks already on show on the playground. Please keep an eye out in future newsletters as to when to bring back Sponsorship Forms.
