This Week in Grade 8ENGLISH: In both Monroe’sand Shull’s English classes,students watchedbrainpop.com videos and TheMaster Race documentary onthe Holocaust to build uptheir background knowledgeof WWII and the Holocaust.Student’s are now into the

first week of reading theirnovels and are beginningtheir weekly LiteratureCircles to discuss the novels -focusing on literary termssuch as theme, vocabulary,character development, etc.

SOCIAL STUDIES:

This week students watched

a video on the PhilippinesPeople Power revolution.They took notes on thehistory of the Marcos regimewhich led up to the peacefulrevolution of the people inthe mid 1980s. Next week

students will begin to writea persuasive essayanswering the question,‘Was People Power asuccess or a failure?’

SCIENCE:

Students spent the weekexploring various simplemachines - the wedge,

pulleys, inclined plane, andthe lever. The concept of mechanical advantage (MA)was explained and studentslearned the MA formulaand made calculations witheach simple machine. Nextweek students will begintheir performance task -working in a group theywill design and build arescue machine (see Mr.Pasamba’s blog for details).

MATH:

Students began andcompleted, this week, theirStatistics performance taskfor which they createdtheir own scatterplots onthe computer to based onclass measurements onheight and arm span. Theyare now discussing graphs -

how to read a graph, createone, and finally will createdata graphs on theircalculators.
