The department is carrying out slope stabilisation and curve widening works on various sections of Kuranda Range, Kennedy Highway.
LocationThe work will repair 16 sites above and below the range road between the bottom of the range and Koah Road. Four curves will be widened at the same time.
Benefits The works will stabilise slopes above and below the road while the curve widening works will improve safety and travel time.
The curve widening works were fast-tracked to coincide with the slope stabilisation works to reduce overall delays for motorists, deliver more cost effective improvements and provide a safer stretch of the highway sooner.
Supplier Pensar is delivering the works on behalf of the department.

Project Overview• Clearing & Grubbing in a Wet Tropic World Heritage
Area. • Rock Scaling and batter regrading using a long reach
and at times beyond the reach of a long reach. • Earthworks excavation and embankment works including
the rock armouring of down slope batters on a narrow, winding and busy road.
• Traffic management that included contraflow, 24hour lane closures, the use of temporary traffic lights over a 24hr period all in extreme weather conditions.
• Road pavement reconstruction. • Slope Stabilization & Protection Works• Soil Nailing and rock doweling both upslope and down
slope using elevated work platforms and sleds,• Shotcreting both upslope and down slope batters using
fibre and unfibre reinforced Coloured concrete.• The installation of Steel Wire Gabion & Mattress Works
down slope to enable curve widening and out fall structure protection.
• High Tensile Steel and Erosion Netting was installed on both up slope and down slope.
• A Fauna Crossing was constructed.
Project Highlights• This was the first project undertaken by DTMR on the
Kuranda Range to feature 24 hour construction work• Works took place in an environmentally sensitive World
Heritage Tropical area. • Work undertaken in the wet season.• The project survived a Cyclone.
• The project was constructed on time and budget.• There were no lost time injuries.• There were no significant or serious traffic incidents
