Zeppelins: Monsters of the Purple Twilight
Scenarios Alan Sherwood, 2015
This book contains 20 Scenarios for Zeppelins: Monsters
of the Purple Twilight, each on one page. Each simulates
an actual historical raid, and begins with the raid date
(being overnight, it covers two dates), a brief title, then a
historical introduction, sometimes with some playtest
notes or hints on strategy. The information is formatted in
the same way for each one, and interpreted as follows:
BRITISH FORCES
FIXED GUNS: This Table is used for rolling up Fixed
Gun Units during the British Reaction [10.2 step 2]. Roll
D6, cross reference with the Gun symbol on the Map, or
the named Urban location, and place the specified Gun
Units(s) in the hex. If ‘-’ is rolled, place a Blank marker.
The numbers in the last column are used for Optional
Rule [10.2.1].
LONDON MOBILE SECTION: Lists the Mobile
Gun Units attached to HQs 1, 2 and 3 [3.3].
ROYAL NAVAL MOBILE BRIGADE: Lists the
Mobile Gun Units attached to HQs 4 and 5 [3.3].
RNAAC: Lists how many HQ are to go on the Planning
Map [3.1a], and their Range [4.1.7].
AIR STATIONS: Lists the number of RNAS, RFC
and HD Air Stations to be marked on the Planning Map
[3.1], and how many Patrols each has [11.4]. Also listed
are the number of Barrage Lights associated with each
HD Station [3.1c], and the number of Observer Lines to
be marked on the Planning Map [3.1d]. For two-Map
Scenarios, North and South Defence Areas are in
separate columns; the Stations and Observer Lines must
be set up in the specified Areas [9.2].
AEROPLANES AVAILABLE: Lists the Plane
counters that are available at the Air Stations; see [9.2.2]
for how this is interpreted. Also listed is the Weapon(s)
carried by the Planes [12.5.1]. HD and RNAS may carry
different Weapon(s).
GERMAN FORCES Lists the number of each Type of Zeppelin used in this
Scenario, whether they are Army or Navy, and the
Engine Failure probability for all Zeppelins [4.2.2].
Under the groups of Types are data used for initial Set
Up [3.4]:
a) The initial Bomb load;
b) The allowable range of ZEL entry hexes;
c) Which Game-turn to place the Zeppelin counter in the
cup;
d) What turn number it must Get Home By [13.2]; and
e) The initial Rain/Ice load (either the actual value, or a
dice combination you must roll). Below this is the number of Zeppelin counters to draw
from the cup each turn [4.2.1], and the Out of Range
Zones (if any) [7.4.1].
WEATHER a) Lists the Upper and Lower Wind initial direction and
speed [3.7a], the Change Table to be used [4.1.9], and
maximum speed (if only ‘Wind’ is given, it applies to
all Altitudes).
b) Number of Sea Fog markers to be combined with
blanks [3.7c];
c) The number of Mist markers to draw from the cup
during Set Up [3.6], and each turn [4.1.1];
d) The range of Altitudes forming the Icing Range
[4.3.8];
e) The number of Blackout Cards to draw each turn
[4.2.2];
f) The Dawn game-turn number (the game ends at the
end of the Dawn turn) [13], and the Moonrise or
Moonset game-turn, if applicable [5.5].
CLOUD MARKERS: The Cloud markers to be used
[3.5], listed by Identity Letter on the marker. Also listed
is the CCN, the Precipitation (if any), and the Altitude
range, Base-Top [5.3c]. The latter is only listed in the
Scenario, not on the marker. If any markers have an
Upper Cloud Layer [5.3d], there are rows in the table for
Upper and Lower Layers.
SPECIFIC RULES Lists the Specific Rules [1.1.2] applying to this Scenario.
Some are in the Rules book, if indicated by the rule
number reference (eg [11.1.2]), and some are described
in detail. If preceded by an *, they refer to an item in the
Scenario details also with an *.
VICTORY Lists the British Initial Victory Points [14.2], and the
expected ratio German:British to be exceeded for a
‘skilful’ victory [14].
Scenario 1
Version 8D 9/24/2015
19/20 JANUARY 1915 THE FIRST RAID This raid is included only for completeness. With only rudimentary British defences, and early low performance
Zeppelins, it is best played solitaire, on the South Map only. The weather was the cloudiest of any raid, by chance the
Norfolk coast where they made landfall was one of the few locations not completely overcast. Note that owing to the
heavy initial Rain/Ice load, Dynamic Lift must be used from the start to maintain minimum Altitude (4,000 ft).

Scenario 2
Version 8D 9/24/2015
31 MAY/1 JUNE 1915 THE ARMY SPEARHEADS TO LONDON The first P-type Zeppelin, the Army’s LZ38, began the assault on London; commanded by Linnarz, the Army’s best.
During May, he made 4 solo raids on Kent and Essex, feeling his way to the capital. At first the Kaiser would not
sanction raids on the City itself, but he finally relented, and on this night Linnarz flew the first Zeppelin over London.
LZ37 (M-type) put in a brief appearance off the Kent coast, but made no attack. Delete it from the Scenario if you want
a good short introductory single-Zeppelin game. LZ38’s career came to an abrupt end a few days later when it was
bombed in its hangar in Belgium by RNAS aeroplanes. This prompted the Army to give up its forward bases in
Belgium and operate from within Germany.

range); but Emergency Lightening [6.2.5] may
not be used. Return to Base is to Belgium, but
with no VP bonus to the British (however still
roll for French Dawn Patrol [13.2.2], if not
above 12,000 ft). For hard landing damage

Lightening.
Scenario 3
Version 8D 9/24/2015
9/10 AUGUST 1915 THE FIRST CASUALTY The Navy now had P-types, and Strasser, Chief of the Naval Airship Division, sent them on mass raids against
London, while sending older ships to less defended targets in the North. In this first attempt, L12 was hit by gunfire
from Dover and came down in the Channel, the first success for the defences. Bad weather frustrated the others and
none came near the capital.

Version 8D 9/24/2015
8/9 SEPTEMBER 1915 LONDON BURNS Strasser persisted, and had many successes in late 1915. On this night Mathy commanding L13 first showed his mettle.
Setting an unerring course, he hit the City of London causing devastating fires and £500,000 damage. On clear nights
like this, with minimal lighting restrictions, the glow on the horizon was enough to find London.

Version 8D 9/24/2015
13/14 OCTOBER 1915 LONDON AT BAY This was the deadliest attack on London: 47 killed and 102 injured. This time 3 Zeppelins found the capital, although
only L15 actually struck the City centre. This was the first time mobile AA guns were ready for the defence of London;
both the Navy and War Office hastily procured or jury-rigged them after the devastation of the previous raid. The
Navy’s single French 75mm autocannon almost scored a hit on L15.

Version 8D 9/24/2015
31 JANUARY/1 FEBRUARY 1916 FAULTY ENGINES, FOG & ICE
In the new year, Strasser’s plans broadened to threaten the whole country. This raid was aimed at the Midlands, main
target Liverpool, which took the British by surprise. However, it was frustrated by the first really wintry weather on a
raid, new lighting restrictions, and unreliable new engines rushed into service on the 6 newest Zeppelins. L19 was lost
due to multiple engine failures.

5/6 MARCH 1916 THE WORST WEATHER
Only the early P-types with reliable engines were sent on this raid to the Northern industrial area, but all met with foul
weather. Snow squalls and gale force winds blew many off course, and kept aeroplanes on the ground. Hull, at the time
undefended, was bombed twice. Watch for headwinds on the way home; Mathy had to land in Belgium.

The Army was still raiding, but did not coordinate with the Navy. By chance both services raided on this night; the
Army going for London, while the Navy struck North, bombing Edinburgh for the first time. April 1916 was the most
intensive raiding period of the war; in the new-moon period of the first week there were raids on 5 nights.

2/3 MAY 1916 DIMINISHING RETURNS To end the season, an all-out raid aimed at the far north, the Forth area. Many went way off course due to heavy cloud
(L20 ended up stranded in Norway), but half the force wisely chose to head for the Midlands instead. The German
player should be prepared for a full rain/ice load and adverse wind on the way home.
Despite the massive effort this month, the British had in fact suffered little. Lighting restrictions and the cloud
and mist of winter and spring had confounded the raider’s navigation. They had, however, flown freely over British
soil and the defences could do little to stop them. But that would soon change.

Scenario 10
Version 8D 9/24/2015
2/3 AUGUST 1916 ‘SUPER-ZEPPELINS’ & FLAMING BULLETS After a summer interlude, late 1916 saw two major developments: arrival of the R-types, christened ‘Super-Zeppelins’ by
the British, and incendiary ammunition for defence aeroplanes. Over the next few months, a fierce struggle for supremacy
would be waged in the dark skies over Britain. London was firmly in Strasser’s sights, and it would burn again, but so
would some Zeppelins. Mathy now commanded L31, the first R-type over England.
The first few raids were brief in the still short nights, and the Zeppelins did not venture far inland. Despite the
exceptionally fine weather this night, neither side had much success. In this scenario, a short sharp attack on near coastal
targets is called for, but RNAS patrols and the clear air will make the coast itself treacherous.

2/3 SEPTEMBER 1916 “THE GREAT RAID” This was the ‘Trafalgar’ of Zeppelin raids; the largest number of Zeppelins over Britain, with both the Army and Navy
dispatching all available Zeppelins (plus two wooden-framed Schutte-Lanz airships) for London. It was also the first time an
airship was shot down in flames over Britain, actually not a Zeppelin but the Army’s Schutte-Lanz airship SL11, victim of
the first successful incendiary attack by a BE2 of 39 squadron RFC near London. The first sight of a burning airship caused
many other commanders to falter and head for home. Mathy’s ship was in repair and did not participate.

Version 8D 9/24/2015
23/24 SEPTEMBER 1916 THE TURNING POINT This was the climax. Strasser dismissed the army’s loss as unlucky, and again ordered ‘South, if possible London’. The
older ships ended up in the Midlands due to a wind shift, but of the 4 R-types, 3 found London. With Mathy’s L31 loaded
to its maximum, this was the greatest bomb tonnage London faced during the war. L31 and L33 struck London, but L33 was
lost to AA gunfire, and L32 shot down by an aeroplane on the approach. Again Mathy’s attack did the most damage and he
escaped unscathed. But with two losses, Strasser conceded the London defences could no longer be dismissed and he began
to order caution. In this Scenario, the clear weather will give both players opportunities for mayhem.

1/2 OCTOBER 1916 ‘CAUTION IS ORDERED’; MATHY’S FALL The order was now ‘target London, but caution is ordered in clear weather’ for R-types only, while the older types
were relegated to Midland targets. This was a cloudy night, and Mathy, with characteristic boldness, judged it good
‘London weather’ and made straight for the capital. Despite his manoeuvrings, testing the defences on two separate
approaches, a B.E.2 from 39 squadron found him and ended the career of Germany’s finest Zeppelin commander.

27/28 NOVEMBER 1916 THE ZEPPELIN DEFEATED For the last raid of the year, Strasser stayed away from London; attack orders were for Midlands and the North. But
even here, the defences were now strong and two Zeppelins were lost, both to aeroplanes. A bright aurora this night
probably caused the early loss of L34 before crossing the coast; L21 headed home late and fell to three aeroplanes in
the dawn twilight near the coast. The losses had now become unsustainable. There was one more raid attempt in
December, with the order ‘attack only with cloud cover, otherwise turn back’; they turned back.

16/17 MARCH 1917 SAFETY IN ALTITUDE
The Army gave up, but Strasser would not let go his dream of bombing England into submission. The recent losses
were not sustainable, but he was convinced the answer lay in altitude. He had his Zeppelins radically modified to fly at
altitudes above the ceiling of the poor-performing night fighters. At a stroke the defences were rendered ineffectual,
and Strasser again set his sights on London. But high-altitude flight had its own problems winds, cold and lack of
oxygen for crew and engines. The battle was now as much against the elements as the British defences. It was many
months before the British admitted the Zeppelins could fly beyond reach of their aeroplanes.

19/20 OCTOBER 1917 “THE SILENT RAID”
Unusual atmospheric conditions this night made high-flying Zeppelins inaudible from the ground. Of all the raids, this was
the costliest to Germany: 11 Zeppelins set out, only 6 returned. But the British defences could claim no credit; unexpected
high winds on return blew them way off course to end up lost and out of fuel over France. Of course that goes beyond the
scope of the game, but the German player must choose between the risks of flying low, or being blown off the Map edge.

12/13 APRIL 1918 THE RISE OF THE NIGHT FIGHTER
1918 saw the rise of high-performance night fighters (Spowith Camel, SE5, Bristol Fighter), spurred on by the night
raids by aeroplanes (Gothas and Giants) in the South. However the North still remained a safe haven, and the now
standard V-type Zeppelins with improved engines pushed more confidently inland, almost to Liverpool, giving the
British their biggest scare for 2 years. But cloud, mist, and their high altitude made the bombing ineffectual.

Scenario 20
Version 8D 9/24/2015
5/6 AUGUST 1918 THE LAST RAID; STRASSER’S FALL The Blaze of Glory. Strasser himself led in L70, the first new X-type. He misjudged the wind, arriving still in the dusk
twilight at only 17,000 ft, to be met by many high-performance fighters, mainly DH4’s and DH9’s, and went down in
flames. With Strasser gone, the drive behind the Airship Division was lost, and no more raids were attempted.
This scenario is set up to models those conditions, and put the Zeppelins in the same peril. It is a good
introductory scenario for a British player, as he gets some immediate action, and the Specific Rules simplify his initial
aeroplane operations. It is not recommended for solitaire play.

Scenario 20
Version 8D 9/24/2015
Extra Specific Rules for Scenario 20, Game-turns 1 to 3.
To simulate the effects of dusk twilight and the German’s apparent miscalculation of position, and also to make the British
player’s first turns easier and give him more action, the following Specific Rules apply to the first 3 Game-turns (or until
otherwise terminated as in G). The standard rules apply in all cases not covered by the Specific Rules.
A. Set Up:
a) No RNAS Air Stations may be North of Great Yarmouth (Zone 13)
b) No more than three RNAS Air Stations may be in Zones 9 and 13.
c) At least three of HD Air Stations 1 to 7 must be in Zone 6.
d) At least seven of HD Air Stations 1 to 8 must be in Zones 1, 2, 5 and 6.
e) Place an ‘S’ Cloud marker in Zone 13, then set up the other cloud counters normally.
f) All Zeppelins have an initial Altitude of 17,000 ft.
B. Plotting Initial Moves: Before the game starts, the German player must plot his Movement for the first 3 turns (6
Impulses). For each Impulse, plot either S, SW or NW. Thus, he should write a list of 6 consecutive directions for each
Zeppelin.
C. British Special Patrols: At the beginning of Game-turn 1 (only), the British player may launch up to 4 Planes from each
RNAS Air Station, regardless of weather (these must be picked from the Planes in the Park boxes, as in [11.1.1]). These go
On the Map in their Air Station hexes. Until they successfully Spot a Zeppelin, they are treated as follows:
a) Do not place a Plane Altitude marker on them; their Altitude is treated as if they were On Patrol, starting in the Take Off
box in turn 1 [12.1.1].
b) During step [4.1.2a] of the British player-turn, these Planes are not removed if face-up.
c) After step [4.1.2b] (when they are turned face-up), in each Game-turn (including turn 1), the British player may move
each of them up to 8 hexes, following any hex path he chooses, except that they may not enter Land hexes. Any that are
so moved are turned face-down (and thus they may not Spot Zeppelins until after the next British turn).
After its first Spot, a Plane follows the normal Plane rules, as do all other Planes launched during the first 3 turns.
D. Zeppelin Entry: All 5 Zeppelins enter in the Zeppelin Entry Phase [4.2.1] of Game-Turn 1, in the hex on the ZEL
marked ‘20’ (2 hexes South of the ‘4’ hex). Then for each one, roll D10 and move it that many hexes North along the ZEL
and then the dotted line that deviates from the ZEL.
E. Zeppelin Operations Phase:
a) The German player may not Search, Bomb or change Altitude.
b) During the Movement Subphase [4.3.5], he must move the Active Zeppelin exactly as it was plotted for that Impulse, ie
in the plotted compass direction; no Deviation, no randomisation. Movement is compulsory, use full MA [7.2], ie move
to the edge of the Movement Zone. Any Zeppelin that moves off the North Edge of the Map immediately Returns to
Base [4.3.6].
F. Plane Attack Subphase: For all purposes for rules [12.2] to [12.5], Unlit Zeppelins are treated as if:
Turn 1: Lit by one Searchlight.
Turn 2: Full Moonlight conditions apply (eg Spotting Range is 2 if CCN = 0)
Turn 3: Moonlight conditions apply.
They may also be Lit normally, as in [10.4].
G. Reversion to Normal Rules:
Above rules apply until any Zeppelin is Lit, or Attacked by a Plane (except with a Jam result), or the end of Game-turn 3,
whichever occurs first. Immediately one of these incidents occurs:
a) All Zeppelins become L Nav Status, and normal Navigation rules apply. The plotted movement is ignored.
b) The Specific Rules on this page cease to apply (exception: Special Rule F, which always continues to apply till the end
of Game-turn 3), and all normal game rules apply.
Remember to check Morale [12.5.3e] if applicable.
The British player should note that it may be useful not to roll for Fixed Guns or declare Barrage Lights, so as to prolong
the application of these rules.
