Overview

Egypt has witnessed favorable progress in achieving manyMDGs, improving its developmental prospects significantly inthepasttwodecades.

Of the16 targets, threehavealreadybeenachievedfiveyearsbeforethedeadline,includinghalvingincomepovertybetween

1990 and 2015, reducing the under-5 five mortality rate, andhalvingtheproportionofpeoplewithoutsustainableaccess toSafedrinkingwaterandbasicsanitation.

Egypthassuccessfullyachieveduniversalprimaryeducation (MDG 2), as the net enrollment ratioincreasedfrom86%in1990to96%in2009.

Yet one country assessment highlights majorChallenges that are yet to be effectivelyaddressed, including high population growth,genderinequality,andyouthUnemployment.

2011 Revolution

These challenges have persisted followingThe January2011revolution,andtheunstablepoliticalandeconomicenvironment has in fact exacerbated key developmentconstraints Egypt is off track in achieving full andproductive employment and decent work for all,includingwomenandyoungpeople(Goal1Target2).

It also struggles to achieve universal access to treatmentforHIV/AIDSforallthosewhoneedit(Goal6Target10),aswellasstepstocontaintherowinghepatitisepidemic.

Newindicatorsarecurrentlybeingdeliberatedforthe post 2015 development agenda to betterincorporate these concerns, yet an effectivemechanism must be realized for nationalgovernments to avoid previous mistakes inimplementation.
