HIV/AIDS…….. at work

• Out of 38.6 million people living with HIV worldwide, 26 million are workers.

• 90% of HIV infections are in the 15-49 yrs age group – the most productive ages.

• India has a working population of 400 million and with 1 in every 100 Indian being affected , most companies will probably have HIV+ employees

• 1.3 million call center and outsourcing workers are emerging as a new risk group for HIV/AIDS

• According to a February survey conducted by SSL International PLC, the makers of Durex condoms -- 11% of 1,100 workers at a call center and outsourcing company in Noida, reported having had more than five sexual partners.

• HIV affects business because of loss of skilled workforce, increased absenteeism, increased recruitment and training costs and eventually reduced profitability

HIV/AIDS…a business need

• HIV/AIDS can be prevented, and prevention is the only answer in the absence of a cure

• Businesses can do so best by offering prevention information and services to their employees, their families and communities at large

Why should businesses get involved?

• For economic reasons: In some instances, HIV/AIDS can result in increased costs and reduced productivity

• For a Positive Business Image which can have both economic and social returns

• To be good corporate citizens, beyond normal business operations or employee welfare and satisfy Corporate Social Responsibility
