For the next few days we will be studying the 1970’s in the United States. In order to properly understand the literature that we will be reading later we will need to understand the mindset and the situation of the 1970’s. We will start with a bit of information from the end of the 1960’s to set up the stage for the 1970’s, we will learn about the people the government, the music and the movies and television. Everything we find will help answer the question:

You are all journalists! Your job is to research and write an article about a specific topic of the 1970’s. Choose which topic interests you and research, the ideas below are just that, ideas, research and write about whatever interests you most. You must work together in the end to comprise all the articles and create a newspaper using Microsoft Publisher.

Topics can include:• 1968 to 1970: historical introduction to the 1970’s• Government: presidents and policies etc…• The Counter Culture• Vietnam War: the draft, effects on the United States or effects on the soldiers, war literature etc…• The Cold War• Protests: anti-war protests or other protests, leading protesters etc…•Civil Rights•Environmentalism: ideas, leaders etc…• Music: a popular band, genre, singer or musician etc…• Television: a popular series, television star or the first televised war etc...• Movies: a popular movie, genre, director or actor etc...• Literature: popular forms of literature (magazines, novels, memoirs…), popular authors etc…• Anything else you can think of! This lesson was designed for EDUC 331, a technology class helping future teachers understand and utilize technology for the purpose of improving education

This lesson is designed to introduce the students to a certain time period, 1970’s. The students each choose certain aspects of the 1970’s research the topic, write and article and publish it in a mock newspaper. The main idea here is that before the students delve into 1970’s literature its is helpful that the students have some background knowledge on the subject. This project also teaches historic literary criticism.

Not only are they gaining great knowledge for the class but they are practicing research, communication and writing skills.

This project is designed for 11th and 12th grade English literature classes. In order to receive the credit for the project the student must collaborate with a partner, research a topic and write an article. The project focuses mainly on history, however the students are gaining great insight into the time period from which they will be reading a novel later.

Prior to this project the students do not need to know anything about the 1970’s. The main focus of this project is to introduce the era to the students.

Student process: Gather your pens and your pads of paper, it is time to start researching:

The project may take 2-3 days depending on how long your class is.

Students are able to choose their partners. If there is an odd number of students there can be groups of thee or a single person.

This project takes no experience at all. Just time management skills to make sure the students are on task doing their research and writing.

VariationsIt would be simple to change the time period from 1970’s to any era.

Introduce the web quest. Explain what a web quest is if some of the students have not heard of one before. Explain that internet research is a necessary tool for the future and this project will mix well with the literature coming up in the course.

It is important that the students understand the historical literary criticism of the web quest.

The writing and research portion of the quest should take the longest. If time is short it is possible to create the newspaper your self and distribute to the students.

This lesson and project will help the students in many ways. For one, the internet is becoming more and more useful and important to our future, it is necessary that our students understand and learn how to use the internet properly and efficiently. Through this assignment the students will have the chance to read and to analyze different types of documents through the internet: articles, chapters of books and web pages. The students will also learn the history of the U.S. during the 1970’s and be able to apply this knowledge later in class, and introduction to literary criticism. The students will also gain collaborative experience through the creation of the newspaper and learn the inner workings of Microsoft Publisher.
