understand function of xylem cells in transport of water and sap in plants.

028 TRANSPORT THROUGH XYLEM

MATERIALS REQUIRED

Water in a glass tumbler / beaker

Some food colouring or ink (blue, red, black)

A flower with a long stalk (preferably a light or white coloured flower)

white flowers

Trim the end of the stalk and place it in the glass with

the coloured water so that half the stalk is in the glass

black ink

Add little ink to the glass of water

Page 3: 028 transport through xylem

Place the glass with the flower at a window sill or where there is sufficient

sunlight for the flower

Observe the colour of the flower over a day and note any changes in the stalk

and flower

Plants need water for sustenance and with

this experiment you can demonstrate how

water is absorbed through the stalks of the

plants into the different parts like leaves as

well as flowers through the xylem cells

Discuss

(i)the location of the xylem cells in the

stem

(ii)difference between xylem and phloem

cells

White flowers coloured blue due to transport of blue ink from the glass
