Calorie• Calorie is the energy content in food
• The energy content in food can be calculated by burning a known mass of food in oxygen in a bomb calorimeter.
• 1 calorie is the amount of heat energy needed to raise the temperature of 1g of water by 1 Celsius.
• 1 calorie = 4.2 joules
• Different classes of food have different caloric value

Use more energy when doing physical activity.
Surrounding temperature
Individuals living in a cold place require more calorie than those living in a hot place
More energy is needed to replace heat lost to the environment and to maintain body temperature
