LegislationThere are many regulations that cover the use of portable power tools.

The main regulation that covers the use of power tools is the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations (PUWER) 1998.

Other relevant regulations are:

• Personal Protective Equipment at Work Regulations 1992

• Control of Substances Hazardous to Health (COSHH) 2002.

PUWER• PUWER applies to all work equipment.

• The primary objective is to provide safe equipment and ensure it is safe to use.

• Covers all new or existing work equipment – leased, hired or second-hand.

• Covers cranes, scaffolding, mobile access platforms, wood-working machines, dumper trucks, hand tools, portable power tools, drill bits, shovels, wheelbarrows, computers, etc.

PPE 1992• Covers the types of PPE required when using certain items of

equipment, machinery and tools, including hand and power tools.

• PUWER indicates that you must wear PPE. The PPE regulation identifies which items of PPE to wear (where as is reasonably practicable).

COSHH 2002• How do you think COSHH fits into using power tools?

• Because we use gas in nail guns and compressed air in a range of other tools.
