• Rioters During Harlem Unrest• Original caption: New York, New York: Today's
temperature and humidity might have been responsible for the boiling over of tempers leading to the small-scale war which suddenly roared through the streets of teeming Harlem. A cameraman got this "front-line" photograph as the victim of a barrage of trash cans still writhed in no-man's land and a junior member of one of the factions advanced to the fray armed with a stick and a rock. The fight is said to have started between factions of Spaniards and Puerto Ricans at the Jefferson Pool at First Avenue and 114th Street whence it quickly spread to adjoining streets.

• Children Reciting Pledge of Allegiance• Original caption: Chicago, Illinois: While other
schools suffer racial discord, America's heritage as a harmonious melting pot is dramatically illustrated in flag salute in Benjamin Franklin School, here, September 9. Third graders who don't know the meaning of "segregation" and "integration", but only that all other kids are companions, make pledge of liberty and justice for all. Pupils are of Caucasian, Negro, Puerto Rican, and Mexican descent.
