Describes the function of each respiratory organ

Name the parts of the respiratory system

Review

Where does air enter?

Motivation

•Group I - Name the organs of the respiratory

system and cite the functions of these •Group II - Name the body parts that

protect the lungs and infer how they protect the lungs.•Group III - Name the parts of the lungs

and describe each part.

Presentation

The organs of the respiratory system and their functions.

Concept Formation

Concept Formation

Upper Respiratory Tract

Upper Respiratory Tract Functions

Passageway for respiration Receptors for smell Filters incoming air to filter larger

foreign material Moistens and warms incoming air Resonating chambers for voice

Lower Respiratory Tract

Lower Respiratory Tract Functions

Larynx: maintains an open airway, routes food and air appropriately, assists in sound production

Trachea: transports air to and from lungs

Bronchi: branch into lungsLungs: transport air to alveoli for gas

exchange

The body parts that protect the lungs and how they protect the lungs.

Concept Formation

Your lungs are protected by your rib cage, which is made up of 12 sets of ribs. These ribs are connected to your spine in your back and go around your lungs to keep them safe.

Concept Formation

The parts of the lungs and description of each part.

Concept Formation

Bronchi At the bottom of the trachea or windpipe, there are two large tubes. These tubes are called the main stem bronchi and one heads left into the left lung, while the other heads right into the right lung.

Bronchioles Each main stem bronchus then branches off into tubes that get smaller and even smaller still, like branches on a big tree. The tiniest tubes are called bronchioles and there are about 30,000 of them in each lung. Each bronchiole is about the same thickness as a hair.

At the end of each bronchiole is a special area that leads into clumps of teeny tiny air sacs called alveoli .There are about 600 million alveoli in your lungs

Alveoli

in your blood need to line up single file just to march through them.

Each alveolus has a mesh-like covering of very small blood vessels called capillaries. These capillaries are so tiny that the cells

Each organ of the respiratory system has a specific function to perform in order for the system to work properly. Like the organs, each one of us has a function to perform. Do you do your job in order for the system to work properly? Do you cooperate?

Application

Examine the organs of the respiratory system. Write the name of the part corresponding to each number. State the function or brief description of each organ.

Evaluation

EvaluationWrite the name of the part corresponding to each number. State the function or brief description of each organ.

Assignment

Bring the following•an empty stick-o/1.5 soft drinks bottle•a Y-shaped glass tube•rubber bands and clay •two small and one big balloons•pair of scissors
