What’s Different?
Sweeping Political Changes Both at Federal and State Levels “We now have a Governor that
understands the business sector.” Changes in tax structure? MBT? “Jobs are Job 1”
Jobs are the key…
Dec. 2009 Dec. 2010
Emmet County 18.6% 15.8%
NW Michigan 16.2% 13.0%
State of Mich. 14.3% 11.7%
Unemployment Rates
After Jobs, then…
…Real Estate Still a struggling economic sector here Some stabilizing in property values And home sales were up a bit But foreclosures increased again in 2010 And Commercial Real Estate is still slow
to move
After Jobs and Real Estate, then…
…Building and Trades Still very little activity in residential
construction Only 18-lots were sold in Emmet County
last year, 14 of those in Bay Harbor
Jobs to Real Estate to Building/Trades will not happen quickly
Local Economic Strengths--Tourism
Tourism was pretty good in 2010 Noticeable improvement over 2009 Hoping for passage of $25.4 million for
Pure Michigan funding And we hope that will include winter
tourism promotion next year Begin to attract kayakers to the new
Bear River Recreation Area
Local Economic Strengths--Resortism
Bay Harbor• First-class events in 2010, particularly the
Antique and Classic Boat Show
• Environmental Clean-up moving toward a conclusion
Bay View• Renovation of John Hall Auditorium
• 2010 was 135th Season
Local Economic Strengths—Health Care
Some tough decisions in late 2010 Careful consideration of a future
