-National Hero of the Philippines -Pride of the Malayan

Race-Born June 19, 1861 in Calamba Laguna

-7th child in a family of 11 children (2boys and 9 girls)

-Francisco Mercado Rizal (Father)-Teodora Alonzo y Quintos (Mother) -at the age of 3 he learned the alphabet

-at 5 he showed inclinations to be an artist

-at 8 he wrote a Tagalog Poem (Sa Aking Mga Kabata)

-at 16 he obtaines his bachelor of Arts Degree in Ateneo Municipal de Manila

Nickname is Pepe

Rizal (from the Spanish word ricial, meaning green field or pasture)

-1877 he enrolled in Philosophy and Letters in University of Santo Tomas

-He finished the latter course on March 21, 1877 and passed the Surveyor’s examination on May 21, 1878.-In 1878, he enrolled in medicine at the University of Santo Tomas.

-May 3, 1882, he sailed for Spain where he continued his studies at the Universidad Central de Madrid

-June 21, 1884, at the age of 23, he was conferred the degree of Licentiate in Medicine

-June 19,1885, at the age of 24, he finished his course in Philosophy and Letters with a grade of "excellent." 

-mastered 22 languages.

The Katipunan Objectives

1. Political objectives - consisted in working for the separation of the Philippines from Spain.

2. Moral objective - revolved about around the teaching of good manners, hygiene, good morals, and attacking obscurantism, religious fanaticism, and weakness of character.

3. Civic aim - revolved around the principle of self-help and the defense of the poor and the oppressed

On Dec 13, 1888 - they established in Barcelona the La Solidaridad.
