Answer Scheme

1. Pattern:

All middle-income countries show at least 20% increase for both sales at supermarket and fast food service outlets.Highest percentage increase shown for supermarkets is in China (488%), and Morocco (120%).Highest percentage increase shown for fast food: Indonesia (125%) and China (120%)

Reason:

rising affluence/ greater purchasing power

changing lifestyles/ more demand for convenient food supply

rapid urbanisation/ more urban population

globalisation of food industry/ expansion of food retail MNCs

2. A country can achieve better food stability through increasing food imports and increasing food production. The government can find and develop new overseas sources for their food imports. This is to ensure that the country does not become reliant on only one source of food supply. Food production can be increased by improving technology such as using machinery on farmland, use of high yielding varieties in order to increase crop yields as well as increasing the use of agricultural land through opening new lands for agriculture.

3. It is crucial to ensure that food is safe for consumption. Hence threats to food safety like the use of expired meat in fast food restaurants will result in a decrease in the consumption of the processed meat products. The people will not have confidence that these processed meat products are safe for consumption. Government need to play an active role in ensuring food safety of the processed meat products.
