6km Walk for Freshwater@ IST – November 2010

Why 6KM? – In some regions of the world such as parts of Asia and Africa, people have to walk great distances to find drinking water. Women and children are normally responsible for this task. The average distance a women in the developing world walks to get water is 6km a day, and she typically carries a load weighing 18kg. That is a long way to go and a lot of water to haul.

The average amount of water that a family in Africa and Asia uses in one day is about 22 litres. By contrast an individual in France uses about 150 litres of water per day.

The International School of Toulouse will be holding a Water Walk during the week of 15th – 19th November 2010. We aim to raise awareness about access to freshwater around the world and help to make a difference in the lives of families in need.

Can you help make a difference? If so, you need to register your interest for the event and pick up a sponsorship form. The walk will be a team based event and will be around a measured circuit in the school grounds during one lunchtime. Teams of students will walk 6km weighed down with a large container of water to raise money for Water Aid.
