Vlkommen - Welcome

Hello!

My name is Pedro De Bruyckere

and last year I talked aboutthe bad and the ugly in education.

You can read all about it,... In Swedish:

Or in the second to last session of the day.

This morning: lets look at the slightly better.

and still sorry.(for my flenglish)((aka Flemish English))

7 principles of acquisition of new knowledge & skills.Hattie & Yates, 2013, Brown 2012

1. Learning takes time, effort, and motivation!

Some say:

To become skilful in a new area:50 to 100 hours

Becoming an expert 8 to 10 years.(+/- 10.000 uren)

Is this really a 10.000 hours rule? No!(oa Macnamara et al, 2014)

Huge differences!

Some people will never learn

Also: practice isnt enough!(Andersen, 2016)

Also important: what you do in practice!(Andersen, 2016)

Aka scaffolding!

Learning takes time, effort and motivation?(and often some kind of help)

2. Concentration spans are short!

Stages taking longer than 15 min.?

Stages taking longer than 12 min.?

Dont!

3. Distributed practice is more effective!

More benefit from 6 sessions, 20 minutes each

than 1 session lasting 2 hours.

= spaced repetition.

And technology can play a role!

Spaced repetition, combined with

4. Prior knowledge is crucial!

Our working memory works like a spamfilter!

(Geake, 2009)

5. Multimedia works!

Im not talking about learning styles.

Very popular, NO evidence!

(Coffield, Moseley, Hall, & Ecclestone, 2004)KolbsLearning styles

Even worse: differentiation for learning styles has little to no effect!

(Hattie, 2009, 2012 and quite a lot of others)

Better reason: dual channel theoryClarck & Mayer, 2011

Dual channel theory:

Word (in print or sound) + image =

Word (in print and sound) + image =

How to prepare a presentation?

K.I.S.S.(Keep it simple, stupid)Clarck & Mayer, 2011

(coherentieprincipe).51

So dont:

Slightly better:

6. You need an active mind!

E.g.: study methodsDunlosky, J., Rawson, K. A., Marsh, E. J., Nathan, M. J., & Willingham, D. T. , 2013

The worst method?

Well

It is parking the knowledge and remembering where you left it.

Best option?

Combined with spaced repetition!

7. Have a vision(but I dont care which vision)

Progressive versus conservative?

Important issue: difficult to define.

Korea versus Finland?

Most of the time: policy-discussion.

Most teachers = eclectic.

But a school with a vision =Experiencing a school as coherent.Cfr Daniel Muijs

And now?

Stay both critical and eager to learn!

And dont forget:

Hattie, Willingham, William, Vygotksy, dont know your pupils.

Me neither

Be informed and do what they need!
