The Mothership… CILM. Housed in an old Grana (cheese) factory, the delicate smell pervades still today
The lobby is full of light and visitors are welcomed at the caffe - the design of which is reminiscent of La Scuola’s reception - minus the coffee and treats.
CILM has a resource center with archives for Reggio and from around the world. It is beautiful and inspiring
The Piazza is used for independent work by children and assembly
Twos and Threes begin to make connections between real world and fantasy - look at the materials
The Threes were hard at work in their gorgeous space. Classroom/atelier/nap area
no baby gates in this place!
The Fours classroom is a multimedia lab
The Fives are using technology while learning science in their biosphere mini atelier. Amazing.
The Mensa… Note different seating for individual tastes
The Kitchen - the fulcrum as it is in SF! Mini kitchen atelier attached for student exploration

We then delved into why I was there, we together named the 16 nationalities of La Scuola, we showed off our language skills- with kids sharing phrases in Farsi, Arabic, Italian, Spanish and Deutsche.
I SO enjoyed this exchange– and it proves that our IB school needs to facilitate exchange trips for our kids to other schools – if I, one boring grown up, can so captivate their interest, imagine what kids their age over several days can do.
5th graders are studying man. On this day, they were researching the Greeks.
Students were in small groups…
With books taking notes
Watching a video and discussing architecture
Mapping civilizations while researching on laptops
Cafeteria of the CILM - where sometimes the K-5 eats due to limited space in the mensa.

Atelier Raggio di Luce. This exhibition is open to the public in the CILM - and smaller versions of it have been presented at MOMA in NYC, as well as other places in Europe.
For children, exploration starts from the center and journeys outward - Claudia Giudici
I would add: not only children’s…
