I found that my footage was very bright and had very high levels of colour, especially yellows and oranges which created more of a warm feel to the video. I didn’t feel this was suitable as it is suppose to be quite an emotional video, and I wanted the audience to relate to this and felt the shots were too bright. To change this, I decided to use a tool called fast colour and add and adjustment layer to my footage. Using the colour selector, I was able to make the footage darker. I applied a slight hint of blue so that the footage appeared more crisp and cinematic. This made the shots more detailed. I think this can really be seen with the shot of my main character when she wakes up.

During filming I forgot to check whether I could be seen behind the actress in the mirror. I wanted the mirror in shot but without me being seen. This makes the video unrealistic and would make it loose its quality. I didn’t want to have to re-shoot this scene, so I had to use the crop tool in premier to remove some of the left side of the shot so that I could no longer be seen. However I have left some of the mirror in shot for continuity. This meant that I didn’t have to re-shoot this scene, saving time.

I found that some of my shots were quite long, so I decided to cut back on some of them. The shoe shot is one which I reduced. I think it is irrelevant for this scene to be so long as it would bore the audience and does not show much in terms of the narrative other than she is getting ready to go somewhere. So this is an example of one of the shots I reduced. Another shot I reduced is one of the character walking to meet her boyfriend, I reduced the time she was off screen as this was also not useful.

To make the video have more of a variety of cinematic shots. I added this shot of a stream just before the main character meets her boyfriend. I feel that this is almost like an establishing shot to make it clear to the audience that some time has passed since the character left her home and to tell them there is now going to be a new location. This shot also makes the audience relax due to the stream being very calm. I used a fade in to add effect to the establishing shot and draw the intention in of the audience before the main disruption to the narrative occurs.

Rough cut to first draft alterationsTo make the main part of the narrative more interesting, I varied the shots used during this scene. In the rough cut, this scene is one long continuous shot in which we do not fully get to see the actors facial expressions or understand what is happening. To improve this, I cut various shots and placed different shot types instead to make it more realistic and allow to audience to clearly see what is happening and what the characters may be feeling by being able to see their facial expressions clearly.

I cut some of this footage out because I didn’t think the shot looked right. At certain stages of this scene, the male actors head goes in and out of shot and I thought this downgraded my work. So instead I decided to reduce this footage so that it starts from him walking away. This looks better as he is fully in the shot and does not go out of it, making the video look more professional.

I decided to alter the ending by making the right screen black and white rather than having both in colour. This is to influence the positive and negative decision that could occur. This makes it clear that the left side is a good choice to make and the right is bad as the use of colour sets emotion.

I decided to add a performance based scene in between some of the narrative. I think this is to make the video more emotive and look more like a music video, as before this was added I felt that my video was more like a short film than a music video. I think this also gives the audience a better perspective of what the character is feeling towards the song and this really brings out the lyrics to the audience’s attention.

These are all shots that I reduced screen time on. I felt that they were a bit long and were not needed for so long on screen. This made the continuity flow better and look more like a music video.

First draft to final I added this close up shot of the alcohol and medicine to make it more clear to the audience what she is doing during this scene. I feel a close up makes the shot more intense and gives the audience a better understanding of what is happening. I also made the ending shots a lot longer so that the audience could take in what was happening more easily. This was one thing that was asked during my audience feedback.

The last thing I found I had to change was the length of the song. Originally I had cropped the length of the song at the beginning and end so that it would fit the length of footage I had. When I added the performance based shots, this increased the video time, and I had to re-add the music to the original song without it being cropped so that it played during the length of my footage.
