Article Research
I have decided to do a Interview for my double page spread article, so I am going to do my article
research on music magazine Interviews.
This double page spread Interview from NME is quite different and I like that, as in the title it says „The
Gospel According to Nicki Minaj‟ In the interview there are 6 very noticeable sub sections which title
different gospel titles that Nicki Minaj has said. Then under this, you can read the questions NME asked to
do with this section. This is quite interesting and different, however It makes the interview more personal
as you get to know Nicki Minaj‟s beliefs and what she feels. It is a very honest and open interview which I
think Nicki Minaj fans and music fans would like to see as that‟s what a lot of the public want about
celebrities, interesting gossip and personal information. The way the questions are asked and presented
are very casual and It is very much like hearing a conversation with someone as the questions are merged
in with the normal text, with just a bold text used to show when it‟s the interviewer.
The six sub sections
to do with the ‘Nicki
Minaj Gospel’
1.If thou is born with it,
thou is born with it.
2.Thou shalt walk tall.
3.Thou shalt keep it
clean.
4.Thou shalt be what
thee sayeth
5.Thou shall not get
caught.
6.Thou shall remember
what thou has to lose
Some questions asked
in the interview
“Before you had even
released a proper single in
the states you could buy
Nicki Minaj magazines in
the newsagents”
“For an artists who hasn’t
even released an album
that’s pretty insane, isn't it?”
“Did you get arrested?”
“So when you were rapping
about lewder stuff, It was
because you felt you had
too?”
This double page spread Interview is from the magazine Q, I think the magazine are trying to portray a quite
laid back theme with the photos as it looks like he's at home in the picture on the left and a home recording
studio on the right. This interview is quite different to the traditional Interview layout, I think this because all the
text is put into one big collection of words in the columns and in the text there is no way of sensing questions
being asked its like the publisher of this article asks his questions by writing them in the article like a question
talking to the reader but then Brandon Flowers actually does answers it, the writer and Brandon talking Is all
spread and changes throughout the text. It is very chilled out and I think the way the text is layout is good as it
produces a flowing and easy to read interview.
Questions from
the Interview
“Isn’t he
concerned
about sounding
a bit preachy?”
“The question is
will the other
Killers feel the
same”
“He seems to
have no clue of
when they will
re-group”
It is hard to get
the questions
from the
magazine as they
aren’t question
like, they do not
say simple
questions, they
are formatted as if
the writer is
telling you
information about
Brandon Flowers
and then Brandon
will reply to the
infomation the
writer puts as if a
question has
been asked.
This double page spread Interview, Is from the popular rock magazine Kerrang! This is quite a traditonal and
expected layout for an Interview, this works well as it is very easy to see where the questions are and where the
answers are, this makes it easy to read. It also means its quite well pulled together and proffesional looking. I
like the way it is laid out as even though Kerrang! Is normally quite messy and jam packed, this is quite
organised and formal with yet the rock look still having an impact on the article.
Questions from
the interview:
“Is it hard
maintaing a
sense of style on
tour?”
“So whats your
secret?”
“Is image
important for
rock stars?”
“Does Davey
Havok ever have
a casual Friday?”
“What defines a
rock star?”
“When you were growing up “Twitter gives fans a direct link
Who represented the ideal to stars, do you think its
Of rock stardom to you?” important to keep an air of
mystery?”
“Do you think
the current
obsession with
celebrity gossip
will ever
subside?”
“Has the
internet led to
the death of the
rock star?”
I decided to try and look for music magazine interviews online rather then just reading them and getting pictures. I went onto mojo‟s website where they specifically had a section for the Interviews they have done for their music magazines. The ones I focused on the most as I want to stick to this sort of theme is „Q&A‟ as this is the stereotypical base for an interview. For an example I have decided to examine the interview „Eleanor Friedberger Comes Into Her own‟ I like the way this Interview was held as it was personal but had a formal and classic organisation, which made it easy to read and made it look professional.

Questions from Interview
“Describe the view out of the window?” “What's the best thing about playing shows in the UK?”
“Im envious of your Wurlitzer electric piano. Does it sound beautiful?” “We asked you to pick your favourite
current music clip on the internet, and“You‟re playing the UK August you chose Van Morrison, doing Warm 29-September 3. Tell us about your love in 1974”group”
“As requested, you‟ve sent a picture -“Whats your favourite album sleeve of actually, several pictures – of yourAll time?” immediate environment”
http://www.nme.com/nme-video/search/interview - This is the link to the web page for the video Interviews that NME hold for their celebrities, even though my interview is going to be printed It was useful to watch some of these to see what sort of questions were read out to the celebrities and how they were held.
http://issuu.com/nmemagazine/docs/nme-21-september/12?e=5942028/4873493 - This link is to one of the issues of NME magazine, It lets you go through some of the articles that were in that issue which gives you a range of different interviews, however they are mixed in with other articles like reviews, but it shows you how they were layout and the language and text.
http://www.mojo4music.com/5282/inside-woodstock-with-organiser-michael-lang/ - This is a link to an interview done by MOJO magazine, It is a 'Q&A' article and this is what I am going for with my magazine.
I continued to look for more article‟s produced other then in magazine‟s as I wanted to widen my range of research and aid
myself when coming to interviewing my band for my magazine. I then decided to look on the magazine NME website because this
magazine would have been my main competitor If my magazine was produced, as I have stuck to the same sort of style and age range. I
also looked at the magazine Mojo as I like the way that magazine looks and the style of their double page spreads and interviews.
