INTRODUCTIONINTRODUCTIONProject Title: Communal GardenProblem Statement:

The Community lacks a regular source of food for the individual households’ 3 meals per day.

Community Needs:

• Lack of food especially nutritious food• Lack of productivity among women and

youth due to the lack of job opportunities• Maximization of the potential of the soil• Variety of seedlings or produce• Protection of possible food sources from

animals

Objectives: • Provide a more regular source of nutritious food• Deepen awareness on the connection of the

community with nature• Strengthen the interaction and interdependence of

the members of the community• Decrease the use and demand of processed food

in the community.

Solution Statement:

A communal garden is proposed to be created in the area, this garden will allow the community a greater access to fresh vegetables/fruits which they can use for their daily needs.

Outputs: 5 or more plots of land made into gardens that are bounded by bamboo sticks and 10 or more different kinds of vegetables and fruits within these gardens; a communal store for them to sell their produce or the dishes they want to sell; 2 members for each of the 5 garden plots will clean and fix it for that day.

Outcomes: Healthier diet of produce from the garden plots; deeper appreciation of nature and man’s connection to it; stronger bond between community members.

LESSONSLESSONSLearned from: Dr. Kendall Thu’s lecture on “The Environment & Society:

The 3 R’s of Conservation”

Specifically about?

Food production has a greater impact on the environment. It can both be an environmental and a health concern.

How applied in your project?

It strengthens the urgency for the need of the community for their nutritious and regular source of food which can be best answered by the communal garden. The garden will also help the community contribute to the lessening of environmental hazard which also affects them in the form of floods.

How innovative is your project?

It uses a commonly known way of growing plants to answer the health and nutrition needs of the community as well as the environmental challenge, with the most accessible resources.

How do you ensure sustainability?

• Develop a plan with the community for the maintenance of the garden, especially the bamboo fences. (i.e. where the funds will be sourced out)

• Advertise to other communities near the area the selling of the products of the community.

• Develop a routinely procedure for the members in taking care of the gardens, the harvesting for individual use, and the selling of the products which includes the youth in the community.
