Inspiration From Real FilmsFILM WHAT WAS INSPIRING?

HOW WE APPLIED THIS INSPIRATION TO OUR OPENING SEQUENCE

MementoThe non-linear narrative structure created an enigma, and made it more intriguing.

We used a non-linear order (flashbacks) to display the characters psychological problems.

The Nutty ProfessorThe one character who is actually two characters due to their different personalities.(Eg: kind and obnoxious)

We decided to use the concept of one character who has two sides to themself.

Fight Club

The story/plot that the main character has been talking to himself/imagining himself as another person for the whole of the film, and in the end he realisesthat Tyler is actually him.

Our plot is similar as the main character/good one believes the evil one to be an actual person who she sees.

Me, Myself and Irene The convention that the character didn’t know they are actually two people.

We decided to make the main character have two parts to them, the good and evil.

25th hour The convention that one of the characters is trying to help the other, however betrays them.

The evil one is trying to help the good one but instead of helping is making everything worse.

U TURN Within the film as the pace increased the music was parallel with this.

We plan to use music that will be parallel with the pace of what’s going on in our opening sequence.

Consideration Of Narrative Structure, Style & Theory

STRUCTURE STYLE THEORY

Non-linear Restrictive

Objective Character Identification

Todorov: YesPropp: PartialBarthes: YesStrauss: PartialCameron: Partial

Most psychological films are non-linear due to flashbacks being used. We plan to use flashbacks within our opening sequence to make the audience feel connected with the character as this is what we found out when doing our questionnaires that they like.

It’s restrictive as we want to create an enigma for the audience so they want to watch the rest of the film to find out what's wrong with the girl and what does the evil one want.

The audience is given objective character identification as they see the characters thoughts and memories. This is to make the audience feel closer to the character.

Todorov: The opening sequence will start with a disequilibrium, this is usual for a psychological genre as they usually don’t go in a linear fashion. There will be flashbacks to the equilibrium however the opening sequence will be set in the disequilibrium.Propp: Within our opening sequence their will be a villain who is the evil one.Barthes: Each one of his codes are mentioned and used within the opening sequence which is to make the audience seek answers and clues.Strauss: The main two opposites of the film are the good and evil one.Cameron: Only anachronic narrative will be used as flashbacks will be seen within the opening sequence.

ConventionsConvention Use Develop Challenge Was there an inspiration/similarity from real film?

How?

1-(plot)involves characters past

X Hunger Games, as the flashbacks show her past which inspired us to do something similar.

2-(narrative) plays on time not in a linear order

X Memento inspired us to try and use a non linear narrative to create a psychological feel to the film.

3-(lighting) mysterious and tense

Hard Candy, as the lighting is blue and sterile which creates tenseness within the film. This inspired us to use tense lighting.

4-)CAM SAMC) close ups and mid shots

Panic Room uses lots of close ups of facial expressions to show how the character is feeling.

5-(MES) wild body gestures X Within the film Panic Room the girl has a seizure which inspired us to use wild bod gestures to show she has psychological problems.

6-(music) build tension and to create shock within the audience

X Se7en uses tense music which is parallel to the pace of the editing which builds tension and shocks the audience. This inspired us to use tense music.

7-(locations) a familiar place X The Adjustment Bureau has a scene where there on the bus which is quite an usually scene, so we decided to use a bus for one of the scenes.
