Management – Production Manager

Nature of role - It’s a big responsibility as they are accountable for organising the production. Key skills for someone of this calibre require them to have initiative and problem solving skills.

Managerial Job - It is a managerial job due to the high importance of the responsibilities held and the power they have to make a change in the production if needed.

Day duties – Ensuring that the production/project is fully operational and makes sure there are no confusions. Eg. how many and which actors are needed on which days; what locations are required each day; crewing requirements etc.

Responsibilities - They work across all genres in film production including documentaries, current affairs, children's films, or comedies. They prepare schedules or scripts and confirm allocated locations for the production into take place.

Working with others - Good relationships are based on trust, commitment and engagement, and a high-quality manager’s essential role is to build these relationships for the benefit of the organisation. This will increase work rate and ensures the tasks set are completed with enthusiasm, on time and with the motivation to do more.

Editorial - Editor

Nature of role – An editor cuts out what doesn’t fit in a project so the story makes sense. He/she enhances the major points, drawing attention to places where the audience should focus. The post-production doesn’t proceed until the editor makes the final decisions about the content which could take weeks/months.

Technical Job – This is a technical job because of the use of technical equipment involved in the post-production. For example, a computer and software's.

Day duties – Editors assemble footage of feature films, television shows, documentaries, and industrials into a seamless end product.

Responsibilities - To ensure the production is a success through finalising and editing footage.

Working with others – Editors work closely with sound editors and musical directors as the film nears completion during post-production.

Technical - Cameraman

Nature of role – A cameraman operates a variety of cameras to record for television shows. The cameraman may use one type of camera for the entire job or use multiple types to accommodate certain settings.

Technical Job – This is a technical job due to the equipment used in the production. They have to specialise in knowledge about the equipment and know how it all works to a high standard.

Day duties – They operate one of several cameras capturing images simultaneously, which involves receiving camera directions (usually over a headset) from the Director, who is based in a production area away from the location or set.

Responsibility – Excellent technical skills and expertise, and there is some scope for creative input.

Working with others – Often tending to work with the lighting crew to enhance communication between the crew and make the scene better.

Financial – Production Accountant

Nature of role – Calculating finances, costing productions, liaising with financiers, and managing cash flow. They must ensure that all legal requirements are met.

Financial Job – It is a financial job due to the high responsibility of the Production Accountant and the risk they’re taking if their calculations are not correct during pre-production, production and sometimes post-production.

Day duties – They manage the day-to-day accounting office functions.

Responsibilities – They are responsible for maintaining financial records during film production and managing finances.

Working with others – They work closely with the Producer and the production office to report on the project’s financial progress against the budgets (cost reporting). In pre-production, Production Accountants assist the producers and production managers to prepare budgets.

Research – Location Manager

Nature of role - Communicate directly with the film production company or advertising agency, taking decisions not only about the right location, but making that location work.

Administrative Job – This is an administrative job due to the documents and contracts that must be dealt with during pre-production and production.

Day duties – Ensuring that the location is available for filming and that all safety issues associated with the area are taken care of.

Responsibilities – Investigating and confirming availability and agreed upon fees to be paid to a location property owner or agent, obtaining a certificate of insurance, obtaining any needed film permits and distributing "resident letters" and/or "filming notifications“.

Working with others – The Location Manager will be closely involved with the rest of the production team, especially the director. Together they deal with issues, such as operational problems and their solutions.

Creative – Hair Stylist

Nature of role – They’re recruited onto films during pre-production and work throughout production, usually on a freelance basis. The hours are long and the job can involve long periods working away from home.

Creative Job – This is a creative job due to the artistic attitude the hair stylist must have during production.

Day duties – They prepare performers' scalp and skin and create hairstyles to suit production requirements.

Responsibilities – Ensuring that the performers/actors are ready to be filmed and look how the director wishes the character to look.

Working with others – They communicate closely with colleagues in the hair, makeup and costume departments, as well as with directors, actors and extras.

Organisational - Gaffer

Nature of role – In charge of electrical work on a production, leading the team of technicians who install the lighting equipment and organize the power supply in order to create the intended lighting effects.

Organisational Job – This is an organisational job due to the authority given to the gaffer and his role to make sure everyone is doing their job.

Day duties – They position the equipment, and operate the lights during filming. He co-ordinates the crew to set up the lighting on the set to where the Gaffer wants it.

Responsibilities – They conduct risk assessments and certify the electrical safety of the production (Health and Safety).  They must keep control of the lighting budget, and oversee the work. They must be aware of the legal regulations relating to working with driving, electricity, and employment.

Working with others – Work closely with the Director of Photography, this helps to visualize in a practical way the 'look' they are trying to achieve. Good interpersonal skills and communication in order to interact with the Cinematographer, Director and other Heads of Department.

Administrative – Graphics/Titles Designer

Nature of role – Design the opening titles, captions and credits for film and TV productions. They spend a long time researching an creating specific fonts which accurately reflect the movies genre or time period.

Creative Job – This job is creative due to the open mindedness required to choose the best option from a wide selection and design it to a professional standard during post-production.

Day duties – Produce a range of ideas according to the daily/weekly brief.

Responsibilities – Working for a long time to make successful titles and credits etc for the project.

Working with others – They meet with the director and editor to discuss the themes and ideas in the film that will have an impact on the opening titles and graphic captions within the film.

James Wan - Director

Before James Wan directed Saw and his other popular films, he made his first feature film in 2000 at the Melbourne Underground Film Festival. After making Saw, Saw II, Saw III and Saw IV, he moved on to making other popular horror films such as Insidious and The Conjuring. However, he is not specifically a horror film director, as he is in the process of making Fast and Furious 7 which is a very highly anticipated film. Billy Wilder – Screenwriter

Billy Wilder is an Austrian-American screenwriter, filmmaker, producer and journalist. He spent roughly 50 years on 60 films, in a majority he was the screenwriter. He started off his career graduating from University of Vienna becoming a journalist. After writing stories for a popular local newspaper, he was offered a regular job at a tabloid in Berlin. His first individual screenplay in 1931 was a success as it was relevant to the current affairs at the time to do with Nazi Germany. He later moved to Hollywood in 1933 where he continued in his career as a screenwriter. His most popular collaboration was with a fellow German immigrant, they made a comedy film which won many awards.
