INTRODUCTION

Man is a social animal and to maintain relation between people and the

communities and their social customs, welfare, reforms social

laboratory methodology is widely used in experimentation. Group of

subjects concerned with social sciences are taught through models

charts and various modern techniques. So the social science teacher

has to make use of various teaching aids like globe, a chart, maps,

projector, film strips etc. to keep them in safe custody and to ensure

easy availability, it is necessary to have a spate room for social science.

This special room is known as social science laboratory.

Social science lab provides a plat form for students to share their

presentations spacious and effective lab break the monophony in

teaching and learning. It provide space to conduct seminars, group

discussion, debates and other activities like day modeling, chart

making, collag work, map work, poster making role play etc.

FUNCTIONS

01. Creates a special environment :- A special laboratory

creates a special environment and also create interest among

learners

02. Ensures proper and safe storing of Audio Visual aids :-

The teacher need various kinds of audio visual aids for teaching

social science. It has not only to be procured but also to be kept

under safe custody. This is the responsibility of the teacher for

which he can seek co-operation of the students. It develops a

feeling of belonging among students.

03. Makes all aids readily available at one place :- If the

different Audio visual aids – some of which may be hardware’s are

stored in different places, the social science teacher have to get

these collected from the various places while teaching. These are

stored and arranged systematically in a social science laboratory.

04. Save time and energy :- If all the audio visual aids are

available in the social science room itself. It will save valuable

time and energy of the teacher.

05. Creates and maintain an effective atmosphere :- A

Laboratory well equipped with equipment and material for

teaching social science will help in creating and maintaining a

much needed conducive atmosphere for social science learing.

For example the wall displays of varied nature can motivate the

juniors, whereas the laboratory will provide a good activity centre

for the seniors.

06. Facilities the use of various teaching methods :- In social

science various teaching methods like problem solving method,

project method play way method, discussion method etc used. All

these methods require special articles or specific sealing

arrangement, which is possible only in a special room.

THE SOCIAL SCIENCE LABORATORY

There is no fixed specification for the area of a social science

laboratory. The only requirement is that it should be spacious enough

to contain all the instructional aides and to accommodate the students

of a class. It will have to be larger than an ordinary classroom. It

should have a few basic essentials such as good lighting and ventilation

adequate number of convenient book cases and other storage facilities.

The wall space should be utilized for display of the chalk board, bulletin

board, models maps and book shelves. The laboratory should be so

arranged as to provide an inviting and stimulating atmosphere. It

should be as much like the ordinary type of class room as possible.

A social science laboratory should posses the following essential aids

and requirements.

1. Maps: - Historical, economic, geographical, political, social and

pictorial maps of all countries.

2. Different charts: - Different types of charts-generating charts, flow

chart, tabulation charts, time charts, relationship charts etc. need

to provided .The charts maybe purchased or prepared by the

teacher or pupils or both.

3. Time lines: - Every social science laboratory should be provided

with a time line which should run half-way along the wall. It

should be painted or made of either the hard-board or card

board.

4. Time graphs: - These may be provided to show the gradual and

incidental rise of fall of dynasties.

5. Models:- Social science laboratory should have models depicting

dams and projects, the solar system, motion of earth, changes of

season etc. and relief models on life in different parts of the

world.

6. Slide Album: - Slides showing architecture sculpture, painting,

dancing, music, etc should also be there.

7. Flag: - Flags of different nations of the world may be provided

with explanatory notes.

8. Agriculture products: - Rice, wheat, millets, tea, oil seed, filer etc.

rocks, stones, and minerals can be collected and arranged after

processing for presentation.

9. Projected aids: - The film projector, film strip projector, Magic

lantern epidiascope etc should also be provided.

10. Reference books: - Provisions should be made for historical

novel, dramas, pictorial books etc. Illustrating the life and customs

of different peoples.

CONCLUSION :

Social Science laboratory becomes the hub of social science teaching

and related activities in a school. It will enable the teacher to produce

dynamic and lively interaction among physical things and students. The

social science laboratory should serve the purpose of a class room, a

library a workshop, a amateur theater, a student’s club, a stock room all

rolled into one.
