Audience Profile

Page 2: Audience profile

• This audience profile will show how I found out

who my target audience is and how I have

reached out to appeal to them, I sent out a survey

in which a gathered results from a range of

questions asking about why they like horror and

what I could to to make my project a success

among them. I also used information gained from

my media classes at college and revision material.

• All media productions are targeted at a

specific background based on their age,

background, sex, country, religious beliefs

and many other factors.

• Analysing a media based production can be

hard, however it is far simpler if you can

identify the targeted audience

Page 4: Audience profile

• All media is produced with an intended

viewer in mind and it is important that

the content is based on the audience and

it suites their understandability and the

style such as is it attractive to the

audience and will they understand what

they are seeing.

Social class• Social class is a big factor in target audience as it has been organised

into groups by the UK government,

• ABC1 – the middle class

• C2DE – the working class

• Both are based on the government census every ten years.

• A – higher managerial and professional

• B – middle management

• C1 – office workers

• C2 – skilled manual workers

• D – unskilled workers

• E – unemployed, unwaged

• Sometimes intended audiences can

be completely wrong and could

appeal to a completely different

range of people, a great example is

the wildly popular series star wars as

it was originally targeted for kids

however became insanely popular

with adults.

Preferred, oppositional and negotiated reading

• A preferred reading is the reading which the

audience was intended to receive.

• The Negotiated reading is one in where the

audience accepts the directors view however

change it to some degree to fit their belief.

• An oppositional reading is one where the audience

completely rejects the preferred reading and take

it in their own perception

The hypodermic syringe model

• According to this, the media is like a needle in which

injects ideas, attitudes and beliefs to the intended

audience who are a powerless mass and have little

option but to be effected by its influential messages, in

other words if you see an action of violence you might

act more violently for a time. If you see a woman

washing up, if you are a woman you might want to

wash up or if you are a man you may want the woman

to wash up.

Page 9: Audience profile

Gender

• For horror movies in my survey 80% were boys

showing that given the stereotype boys are

more attracted to horror, violence and thrills to

some degree it could be true. Also research

over the internet show that grocery items and

themes may attract women were as themes

such as technology and warfare may interest

men.

Page 10: Audience profile

Age

• From research I carried out and from around the

internet, it can be gathered that horror movies of

an age rating of 15 – 18 are the most popular,

this can be shown in the profits of films such as I

am Legend and Insidious. Also there is a certain

age were children are considered too young to be

exposed to horror qualities such as gore and

paranormal messages.

Survey results

• The results from my survey show that at the

moment the most popular horror sub genre is

slasher and this can show that one of the most

popular qualities in a horror movie is blood and

gore which could show that a big percentage of

viewers want images that will stay in their

minds and not a jump scare that will effect

them for one instant.

Page 12: Audience profile

• From my research I have gathered that my project will have to

appeal strongly to males as they take up 80% of my audience and it

shall have to include stalker and Slasher themes as it was the

biggest factor of horror percentage wise. I will have to target a niche

audience of 16-20 year olds as they are the standard age you would

find in my college and therefore the people most likely to view my

project. I will have to include a message in which the audience can

take in a preferred reading but the can change to either an

oppositional or negotiated reading if they may choose as to

maintain its success and not go in a one way way of saying there is

only one way to perceive my project.
