Broward County Library’s Web Site

Broward County Library’s Web site has evolved from

a simple electronic catalog to a vital communications tool for our customers. In the last four years, the number of online visitors has increased tenfold, with the average customer spending 20 minutes on our site.

Visiting Broward County Library’s Web site opens a world of communication for customers. It is an easy way to find valuable resources with just a click of a mouse.

Additional services and features are continuously being added to improve our customer’s online Broward County Library experience and make it easier and faster to use our Web site. The award-winning E-Newsletter or the new E-Spotlights are great “green’ ways to find about all the services and programs your library offers while conserving resources for the environment.

Tracking the Web Site’s Success Broward County Library’s Web site has grown tremendously in the last four years. From a link-based site to an engaging online community, www.broward.org/library has become a library leader online.

The page views and electronic visitors show how the library’s Web site has transformed.

In addition to continual growth, Broward County Library’s Web site has won an array of impressive awards in the last year alone.

The library’s new E-Invitation and interactive annual report were selected as National Association of Government Communicator awards in early 2008.

The library’s E-Newsletter was honored to be selected as the Best in Class award as well as a Superior award in the 2007 National Association

Bookings Online – Environmentally Friendly and EconomicalBookings, Broward County Library’s monthly magazine has grown tremendously in the last four year with more than 50,000 issues downloaded in January 2008.

Downloading this magazine online helps the environment since no paper is ever used. Additionally, it is a great economical savings. In 2006, 275,629 Bookings were downloaded online – a savings of almost $72,000 if those issues would

have been printed. In 2007, a total of 339,832 Bookings were downloaded – a record – saving almost $90,000 if those issues would have been printed.

of County Information Officers (NACIO) awards. This was the first time Broward County Library achieved a Best in Class award. The library also won an excellent award for its Blues School Web Commercial and a Merit award for the Online How to Guide from the NACIO competition.

Additionally, Broward County Library was selected to receive a 2007 Hermes Creative award and a 2007 APEX Award for Publication Excellence for its E-Newsletter.

Recycle your gently used books, magazines, movies and music by donating them

to your local Friends of the Libraries group. They’ll be sold at book fairs, and the

proceeds will help pay for library programs, materials and more.

Do good and feel good by volunteering at the library. Broward County Library

volunteers provide thousands of hours of community service annually, helping with

everything from adult literacy to shelving books.

What began as a Green family vacation in Italy quickly turned tragic. Reg Green’s seven-year-old son, Nicholas, was shot in an attempted robbery by highway bandits. When Reg and his wife, Maggie, made the decision to donate their son’s organs and corneas, they changed the lives of seven Italians who were waiting for transplants and the hearts of people all over the world. In his book, “The Gift That Heals,” Reg shares his story and the stories of 41 other families who have celebrated life through organ and tissue donation.

Broward County Library and the Museum of Discovery and Science have teamed up to make science exciting and fun for our area’s young children so that they become motivated to continue to explore and apply scientific principles throughout their lives. This partnership and funding from the A. D.

Henderson Foundation has resulted in the launch of a pilot initiative which includes a series of four interactive Family Science interactive programs offered at eight different libraries throughout Broward County. Each of the four programs will introduce a different area of science: astronomy, biology, chemistry, and physics. The programs strive to attract children through carefully selected themes, to engage them while introducing basic principles through entertaining stories, and to facilitate the application of basic scientific principles through hands-on experimentation. Further exploration of the particular area science is encouraged through displays of Library resources and selected bibliographies. Seating is limited. Please call library location to register.

Nearly 550 Broward Public Library Foundation supporters recently attended the20th edition of Literary Feast’s fundraising Night of Literary Feasts, meeting 20 nationallyknown authors at the signature cocktail reception at the Main Library, followed by gourmetdinners at private homes and restaurants in Broward County.

Literary Feast 2008, for which NovaSoutheastern University was the title sponsorfor the seventh consecutive year, raised morethan $235,000 for the Broward Public LibraryFoundation. The Sun-Sentinel was thePresenting Sponsor of the event for thesecond year.

“We believe that NSU’s support of theBroward Public Library Foundation’s LiteraryFeast and Lit LIVE! coincide with our mission– to offer educational programs ‘at times andplaces convenient to the student’ and to servethe community by allowing citizens to expandtheir knowledge,” said Dr. George Hanbury,NSU’s ExecutiveVice President, and a memberof the Library Foundation Board of Directors.

Christa Porter of AutoNation andSuzanne Migdall of Summers Productions, Inc.co-chaired the event.“We worked with morethan 200 volunteers, who made sure ourauthors and guests had an exceptional time,”said Christa Porter. “We couldn’t have donethis event without the incredible generosity ofour 36 dinner hosts,who opened their homesto our guests.”

The authors, including Tasha Alexander,James Brady, Lauren Groff, John Hart, andSouth Florida’s JenniferValoppi, James Hall andinternationally renowned interior designerCecil Hayes,were welcomed on March 13 at aparty at the home of AutoNation CEO MikeJackson.The authors mingled with 75 guests,and had the opportunity to meet the coupleswho would be hosting individual dinners in theauthors' honor the following evening.

On March 14, the authors visited 19 highschools throughout Broward County to sharehelpful advice with aspiring young writers andreaders as part of Novel Day for Students,sponsored by BankAtlantic. At each school,the authors announced the winners of thecounty-wide Literary Feast short storywriting contest, including Camille Oviedo, ofMcArthur High School, the winner of the$1,000 Sun-Sentinel Short Story Grand Prize.

Literary Feast concluded on March 15 with LitLIVE!, a free daylong series of authortalks and book signings for the public, at Nova Southeastern University's Alvin ShermanLibrary, Research, and Information Technology Center.

Campaign launches to keep Library shelves full

Are the shelves at your local library looking a little emptier these days?

Due to tax cuts last fall, Broward County Library’s materials budget was reduced by $1.7 million, from $8.3 million to $6.6 million. Each year, the materials budget provides for the purchase of new circulating books, audio books, reference materials, magazines, online services, CDs and DVDs for children and adults.

To help offset these cuts, the Library’s two support organizations, the Friends of the Broward County Libraries and the Broward Public Library Foundation, are launching a joint fundraising campaign, known as Invest in Knowledge. We’re asking Broward residents to join with us to make sure that, even in these difficult economic times, we have access to all the materials we have come to expect from the ninth largest library system in the country.

You’ll soon see posters and brochures with the Invest in Knowledge campaign theme in all the branch libraries. You’ll also find information on the Library

web site (www.broward.org/library) and the Library Foundation’s web site (www.bplfoundation.org).

We welcome contributions of all sizes, and for a donation of $35 or more, a bookplate will be placed in your honor in a new book or other format purchased by the Library system.

Both the Friends and Library Foundation believe in spending time and money to help Broward County Library continue to be among the most important resources in the community. Now you too have the opportunity to be part of this effort. We appreciate your support.
