What are brand guidelines?

Brand guidelines are a set of rules, explaining how your brand works. They

typically include general information about the brand including their vision,

history and key values. They essentially summarise what the brand stands for

and also provide guidance on how the brand identity elements such as how

logo and fonts should be used and communicated.

Some essentials brand guidelines include the brand’s message, a recognisable

logo, a colour scheme or colour palette, a type style/font, an image style and

a business card.

Overall these types of guidelines ensure that your brand message is

communicated consistently across all marketing channels and customer touch

points. They also ensure a unified look for the brand as a whole.

Some examples include:

Logo

I believe the logo will be an important part of my brand guidelines as this will

be the most recognisable aspect within my two ancillary tasks. My logo will be

the name of the band ‘The Pretty Reckless’ presented in the same particular

typeface over both tasks, creating a type of house style. I believe the font I

have used connects to the rock genre and music fans will instantly recognise

this logo belongs to a rock band. On my ancillary tasks, I may present my logo

in different colours depending on the background image. My aim is to make

my logo/ the name of the band stand out as much as possible therefore it is

also presented in red on some occasions. However, as these two colours are

part of my house style, the logo still link with the overall look of my products.

Typeface

This is my primary typeface that will appear on both of my

ancillary tasks – my magazine album advert and my digipak. I

think it is important to include the same font over different

platforms which belong to the same band/album so they

become instantly recognisable to the audience and the fans,

and so they can link this type of typeface to their music.

Colour Swatches

C=18 M=100 Y=100 K=0

C=0 M=0 Y=0 K=0

These are the two primary colour swatches I used for my ancillary tasks as part

of my house style. I believe these colours are quite simple yet they go well with

the rock genre and also with the album’s name ‘Light Me Up’ as red can

connote fire for example.
