Mitzvot: An Opportunity to ConnectJudaism is rich with mitzvot, commandments presented inthe Torah. Mitzvot strengthen our inherent connection withthe Creator because the performance of mitzvot allows us toaccess deeper dimensions of being and existence. The 613mitzvot of the Torah include acts of charity, keeping kosher, affixing a mezuzah to your doorpost, and lighting Shabbatcandles. Each act enhances and refines another aspect of ourbeing and another dimension of our relationship with G-d.Our sages tell us that the 613 mitzvot correspond to thevarious parts of the body. The 248 positive instructions areassociated with our limbs, and the 365 prohibitions, with ourarteries. We should never pass the opportunity to performany mitzvah since each act strengthens our relationship withG-d on a particular level.
Although all Jews are instructed to observe the mitzvot, notall 613 apply to everyone. Some apply only to the Kohanim(those responsible for priestly duties). Others apply only whenJews have the Holy Temple in Jerusalem. A certain group of
mitzvot are only relevant for Jews residing in the Holy Land ofIsrael, since they are specifically related to agriculturalpractices of the land. The 613 mitzvot are therefore connectedwith the collective body of the Jewish people.
The Three WeeksJune 29–July 20This is a very sad period on our calendar during which manyof our nation’s calamities occurred. The period begins with afast on the 17 of Tammuz (June 29) and concludes with a 25hour fast on Tisha B’Av (July 20). This period of three weeks isa period of national mourning for the destruction of the twoTemples. During this time we do not celebrate weddings orhold festivities.

Tisha B’Av - July 20Tisha B’Av, the 9th day of Av, is the saddest day of the year. From the beginning of our nation’s history, when G-ddecreed on this date that the Jews would wander in thedesert for forty years, through the destruction of our twotemples in Jerusalem, to the most recent Holocaust, this dateappears as a pivotal point in time.
Tisha B’av has been set aside as the national day of mourningfor all of our nation’s tragedies. In addition to rememberingall these tragic events, this day is used as a day of prayer tothe Al-mighty. We pray for Him to bring us the finalredemption through our righteous Mashiach and therebuilding of the Third Temple. Within our sadness shines abeacon of hope which will ultimately carry us through.
Tu B’Av - July 26Tu B’Av, the fifteenth of the month Av, is a day with no specialobservances, but bears a festive character reflected in theomission of Tachanun, a downkey penitentiary prayer afterthe morning and afternoon prayer services (Shulchan Aruch,Orach Chayim 131:6). The Talmud (tractate Taanit, 30b-31a)mentions Tu B’Av as a major festive day during the days of theTemple in Jerusalem, parallel in character to Yom Kippur. On
this day, unmarried girls would lend each other simpleclothes (so that the richer girls could not be visuallydistinguished from the poorer ones) and sing and dance inthe vineyards surrounding Jerusalem.
There are several reasons for festivity mentioned by theTalmud and its commentators (Mishna Taanit 4:8 andBabylonian Talmud 30b and 31a, Rashi on these): During theJewish people’s 40-year wandering in the desert, femaleorphans with no brothers could only marry within their tribeto prevent their father’s inherited land in the Land of Israelfrom passing on to other tribes. On the fifteenth of Av of thefortieth year, this ban was lifted.
• In the same year, the participants in the Sin of Spies ceaseddying.
• The Tribe of Benjamin was allowed to intermarry with theother tribes after the incident with the Concubine of Giv’ah.
• The wood offerings for the Temple ceased.
• The nights, traditionally the ideal time for Torah study, arelengthened again after the summer solstice, permittingmore study.
• The Roman occupiers permitted burial of the victims of theMassacre of Bethar.

Tu B’Shvat - January 30Jewish tradition regards the 15th day of Shvat as the NewYear of the Trees, the season when trees begin to bud in theHoly Land of Israel. Just as Rosh Hashanah, the New Year forcreation, is viewed as the day on which man is judged, so isTu B’Shvat a day of judgment for earth’s vegetation.
To commemorate this special day, Jews throughout theworld eat foods that are distinctive to and characteristic ofthe Holy Land, including the seven types of fruits and grainmentioned in the Torah: wheat, barley, grapes, figs, pomegranates, olives, and dates.
A new seasonal fruit is customarily eaten on this day for thefirst time. The blessings Shecheyanu and Ha’eitz are said overthe fruit. The Torah states: “For man is the tree of the field.”There are many lessons to be learned from this metaphor. One lesson, particularly relevant on Tu B’Shvat when wecelebrate through eating fruits is: Just as a healthy tree bearsfruits, so should one strive to produce fruits in his life. These“fruits” are the good deeds and mitzvot that we do to bringspiritual nourishment to those around us. Furthermore, notevery tree bears the same fruit. In addition to our commonmitzvot and responsibilities, we each have a special role toplay in making the world a beautiful garden.
Mitzva Spotlight: KosherWhat is Kosher? Kosher stands for quality, purity, wholesomeness and truth. The word “kosher” literally means“fit for use,” and fitness—physical and spiritual—is a matter ofmaking the right choices. The kosher laws were not made forphysical health, but it comes as no surprise that what is goodfor the soul is good for the body as well.
The body and soul are intimately connected. The Kabbalahteaches that whatever happens to the soul is reflected in thebody, and the food the body consumes impacts the soul.
Just as some foods are healthy for the body and others areharmful, so too, the inner person, the soul, has foods thatnourish it and foods that obstruct its growth.
The soul needs to breathe, to reconnect to its source, and thebody is its only conduit. Eating kosher food ensures that thearteries of that spiritual connection are clear and the soul isable to shine through.
As everyone knows, religion involves prayer, meditation, charity, ethics, and at times, various forms of self-denial.Judaism, however, encompasses every aspect of life, thespiritual as well as the physical. In a real sense, kosher lawsrepresent the meeting of body and soul.
