Content Area: Teenage Pregnancy

• Teenage pregnancy is a very large problem in the United States today.

• Teenage pregnancy is when a girl under the age of eighteen becomes pregnant.

• Nearly eight percent of all of U.S. pregnancies are from teenagers.

When Is The Acceptable Age to Have a Child?

• There is no concrete age but most people in a survey by the American Scientific Mind say the age should be at least 25.

• However specialist doctors and physicians say the age should be at least 28.

How Many Teenage Pregnancies Are Reported Each Year?

• In the year of 2008 over 28,000 teenage pregnancies were reported.

• The majority of teenage pregnancies occur in the South West and urban areas.

• The demographic with the highest teenage pregnancy rate is actually Native American.

Should the Legal Intercourse Age Be Raised or Lowered?

• People aged 30-75 say that the legal age should be raised to at least 25.

• The current debate is over the issue of the legal age is because of mainly overpopulation.

• Also teenage pregnancies also cost a very large amount of Government money.

Should Contraceptives Be Legal?

• Currently contraceptives are legal due to the constitutional law of freedom of choice.

• However major religious authorities including Pope Benedict XVI claim that contraceptives are unholy and immoral.

Should the “Morning After Pill” Be Legal?

• One of the most controversial subjects is currently the morning after pill.

• The pill is technically abortion since it destroys the fertilized egg.

• But it is legal since it is not a 3rd trimester abortion.

My Career

• The career closest to my topic I could find was a Pediatrician.

• A Pediatrician is a Doctor who specializes in the care of children under the age of 18.

My Career Continued

• This career relates to my topic because Pediatricians actually hold a large influence over their patients.

• They also take care of the patient who is pregnant until the 3rd trimester of their pregnancy.

• A Pediatrician must be intelligent, practical and friendly towards their patients.

Education

• Typically a Pediatrician requires 4 years of regular college and another 4 years of Medical School.

• Also a Pediatrician is required to have 2-4 years of internship under a group of qualified professionals.

• The college I have selected is the University of Maryland Medical School.

• The average fee for tuition per semester is $22,310.• The school is located in college park Maryland.• The school mascot is a terapin.

High School Career Academies

• The high school career academy I have selected is the Medical and Health Careers Academy.

• To enter you must have a C+ or above and must test at or above grade level on standardized tests.

• You must also have a GPA of at least 2.5 with no failing classes.

Salary

• The beginning/entry level salary of a Pediatrician is roughly $117,550.

• The average salary of a Pediatrician is $255,370.• The potential salary of a Pediatrician is $339,738

Future Employment

• The medical industry is one of the fastest growing occupations in the U.S.

• The employment of Pediatricians is expected to rise 22% between 2008-2018.

Career Pathways

• A Pediatrician has to be first trained in General Proctology before being certified as a Pediatrician.

• This means that a Pediatrician can serve a General Proctologist or any other doctor after taking the certifying courses.

Potential For Advancement

• A Pediatrician has no real potential for advancement because they have already reached the top of the mountain by completing 10-12 extra years of secondary education. (High School excluded)

High School Courses

• A necessary skill learned in High School is Human Biology which shows the body's basic layout and structure, a valuable skill in the medical profession.

• Also becoming certified in CPR can be a sign to your employer that you genuinely care about helping people.

Community Service

• Most colleges won’t think twice to ignore a resume’ of an individual with bare minimum community service.

• This is why there is no community service with a direct correlation to the medical profession but you should try to do as much as possible.

Areas of Employment

• Geographically speaking the highest place of employment in the U.S. is the state of California which employs a recorded 5,390 people or 0.39 jobs per 1000 jobs.
