DEFINITION
Communication means interchange of thought or information’s conveyed to a person or persons in a way that meaning received is equivalent to those with the initiator of the message intended.
BASIC ELEMENTS OF COMMUNICATION
Sender (source) Receiver (audience) Message (content) Channel (medium) Feed back (effect )
SENDERThe sender or communicator is the originator of the message.
RECIEVER All communication must have an
audience; this may be single person or a group of people without the audience.
The audience may be of two types the controlled and uncontrolled.
MESSAGE A message is the information with the
communicator transmits to his audience to receive, understand. Accept and act upon it.
A good message must be – In line with the objectives Meaningful Based on felt needs Clear and understandable Specific and accurate Timely and adequate Filling the audience Interesting Culturally and socially appropriate
communication
CHANNELS OF COMMUNICATION Channel is implied the “physical
bridges” or the media of communication between the sender &the receiver. Interpersonal communication Mass media Traditional or folk media
FEEDBACK It is the flow of information from the
audience to the sender. It is the reaction of audience to the message.
BASIC CHARACTERISTICS OF COMMUNICATION SKILLS
Requires at least 2 people Continuous & reciprocal People receive & send message through verbal & nonverbal means.Verbal & nonverbal communication occurs simultaneously.Communicating people respond to messages they receive.Exchanging messages requires knowledge Past experiences influence messages
THE PRINCIPLES OF COMMUNICATIONThe communicator must perceive their
client’s problem.The message should be very specific,
significant, adequate & accurate.The message must be properly
designed & organized. The message should be appropriate &
in simple & correct language.Conclude presentation by high lighting
key messages.
Contd.There must be effective communication.There must be byway communication.There must be direct communication.Communication should involve as many
sense organs as possible.The environment must be conductive to
communication of health information.The communicator must pay attention to
his/her image while presenting message.

DEVELOPING COMMUNICATION SKILLS
The nurses who have developed good critical thinking skill make the best communicator. Curiosity motivates the nurse to communicate and know more about the person. Clients are more likely to communicate with nurses who express an interest in them.
Thus critical thinking facilitate communication through creative inquiry, focused self awareness & awareness of others, purposeful analysis &control of perceptual basis
