How Content
Gains Meaning
and Value in a
Networked
Culture By Henry Jenkins
The crisis ofContent
•Content is no longercontained and wecannot think aboutthe content the sameway, we thoughtabout it in thepast.
Content is now:
1.Transmedia2.Participatory3.Remixable4.Spreadable5.Global6.Independent
1. Transmedia
convergence as the flow of content across media platforms in an integrated or systematic
way.
Transmedia storytelling
Represents a process where integral elements of a fiction get dispersed systematically across multiple delivery
channels for the purpose of creating a unified and
coordianted entertainement experience. Ideally, each medium
makes its own unique contribution to the unfolding of
the story.
2. Participation
•People engaged in grassroots ways with the content of media.•Low barriers for engagement •Sharing creations with others•Informal mentorship•Members believe their contributions matter•Care about others’ opinions of self and work
3. Remix
4. Spreadable•Content circulated through the culture and while it circulates it gains value.•Kony 2012
–70 million views in 2 days.
Also
“twitter revolution”
5. Global•If the Kony 2012 video would have been broadcasted on TV, not on network media, it would not have spread around the world so quickly.
Independent•Mass producers still have certain advantages in terms of commanding top visibility, but independent producers have more opportunities to spread their work more than ever before. •The independent producers now have the capacity to appeal over the heads of the commercial structure directly to their consumer base.
