Getting copyright Permission for our film

Olivia Gascoine

Wrote the first email to the email address that we found to be linked with copyright of James Blake.I took the role of writing these emails and contacting who was involved as I am happy to write formal, informational emails and thought I could put together an email which would help us gain copyright. I think this email explained our situation well and asked clear questions in how to gain this consent.

I received a response from the Privacy officer of U Music which was another address I sent the same email I sent on the earlier slide. This Email was useful as it gave us a website in which led us to another person to contact within the UK.

The Global contacts link gave me Laura Leon’s email address in which I sent the same email.

I received an ‘out of office’ reply almost instantly but was given another address in which I tried to contact.

Here I sent the same email to Mrs A Solieri.

I then received an email from the first email I sent which stated he would need to see it before permission was given. This is the reply we were expecting and hoping for and gave us positive hope that we could receive the consent.

To respond to his email I exported our film and uploaded it to Sky Drive so Andy would be able to watch the film and decide if permission could be given. I have used formal and polite language in order to be professional and respectable.

Nearing the deadline I tried to contact Andy again so speed up receiving an answer. As James Blake’s music is practically un recognisable in our film and sounds more like sound effects we were quietly confident this would be okay. Furthermore the fact we didn't layer his whole song and rather split the track into very small parts gave us more confidence.

The next day I received this email from a individual I had not yet contacted however my email must have been forwarded to ‘Alex Kelly’. This email had a attached word document and a strong reply in telling us exactly what we would have to do to gain the consent.

Page 11: Copyright permission

The other part of the email, the detail in this email showed us just how many people there are to contact in order to gain consent and this email made us unsure if this would cost to have copyright.

Page 12: Copyright permission

However I still have filled out the form given in hope that we will at some point be given consent epically as this is for A2 coursework, only lasts a short duration and is for an ‘amateur’ film.

The second part of the form.

Finally we have not yet heard back from Alex Kelly although we feel we have tried our very best to gain consent to use James Blake’s track ‘Don't you think I do’

If their were distinct lyrics and we wanted to use the whole duration of the clip we decided as a group we would not use this music.

However due to the fact we only used very short parts of the song and the most part of this sound sounded more like ambience sound effects and footsteps with highlights of voice we decided to keep James Blake’s music in our film

If we had more time and the resources and knowledge to create our own music we really would have loved to incorporate this in our film as it would be more original and it could be an added USP to our film

We are pleased that we have made our own music on audacity by using echoes and phaser effects and we have also used non copyright music. Furthermore we have used non copyright sound effects and layered them to create our own music.

Conclusion

So to conclude we are disappointed we weren't able to get official consent within the deadline of finishing all of our A2 Media Coursework.

We feel James Blake's track adds a great deal of suspense, interest and adds to the modern, contemporary theme we wanted to create.

We also feel due to the fact we have created our own music & found copyright free material we have used our resources to collect the best music and sound effects suitable for our film Identity.
